Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 2 sessions will be on August 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. Additionally, in only two days (on August 16th), The Social Brain will host a “Basket Night Fundraiser” at the Sound Beach Property Owners Association at 6:30PM! This will be fun night with 250 plus baskets and prizes being raffled off; top raffles include brand new bicycles from Walmart and an overnight stay at Gurney’s in Montauk. All are welcome to attend! If you bring school supplies to be donated, you will receive a single raffle ticket for each item you donate. The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions.

Parents from local schools have a new tool in their backto-school bag of tricks this year as all of their school’s supply lists are now posted on TeacherLists.com. With just one or two clicks, parents can find their child’s exact supply list and then click right over to pre-filled shopping carts on Target, Walmart, Office Depot, Amazon, or Staples to purchase their list and have it shipped right to their home. Target, Walmart, Office Depot and Staples also offer in store pick-up. Super easy, super convenient. Marching Band Plans Spy-Themed Show The jewel-encrusted Viking helmet has been stolen, and it is up to the Seaford High School marching band to recover it. That is the theme for this year’s spy-themed marching band show, which will be performed at all home football games and the Newsday Marching Band Festival in October. More than 80 members of the marching band and color guard spent a week rehearsing for the show. The five-day camp, which began on Aug. 5, allowed students to learn the music and choreography.

Audience members should recognize the songs, which come from popular movies including “Ant Man,” “Austin Powers,” “James Bond” and “Mission Impossible.” The Viking helmet gets passed around the band during the show. Throughout the week, the band and color guard practiced in the school and on the football field. There were several theme days in which participants were encouraged to dress up including twin day and “Would you still be my friend if I dressed like this?” day.

Band directors Chris Coniglio and Anthony Romeo were assisted by Seaford music teachers Spencer Bloomenfeld, Nicholas Coacci and Barbara Sherwin and staff members Frank Batista and Dan Dunninger. This year’s drum majors are seniors Andrew Calvacca and Pablo Hashem, with Oniké Pinnock and Katelyn Winter serving as captains of the color guard. Marching band camp concluded with a Friday evening performance for family members.
