Hempstead Town Receiver of Taxes Don Clavin reminds taxpayers of the payment options provided by his office as the deadline for paying the second half 2014 General Property Taxes approaches. Payments received or postmarked by August 11th will be penalty-free, as the August 10th deadline falls on a Sunday. “Among the convenient payment options offered by my office are drivethrough payment windows, satellite offices, the mobile tax office and electronic payments,” said Clavin. “To serve communities a distance from Town Hall, our mobile Town Hall and two satellite offices are available to accept payments, while taxpayers can make electronic payments on our website from the comfort of their home or office.” “Our drive-through payment windows which are located behind the

Tax Office at 200 North Franklin Street in Hempstead, are popular with taxpayers who wish to pay their bills in person,” said Clavin. The drivethrough windows will be open business days, August 1st through August 11th, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will accept payment by check or money order only. During peak collection times, hours of operation at the main tax office will be 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (August 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 11th). “My staff at the Tax Office is able to assist taxpayers with account inquiries and accepts all forms of payments,” said Clavin. Satellite offices at Rock Hall Museum (199 Broadway, Lawrence) and Levittown Hall (201 Levittown Parkway, Hicksville) will be open to receive checks and money orders for tax payments from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on August 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th

and 11th. To make a tax payment online, log onto the town’s website at www.TOH.LI and follow the “Receiver of Taxes” linkto“Online Tax Payments,” or call Official Payments Corporation at 1.877.306.6056. Taxpayers may pay via credit card (a2.5 % convenience fee is incurred for credit card transactions) or e-check (a flat fee of $2 is incurred for electronic check payments). Hempstead Town receives no portion of the convenience fees, which are charged by Official Payments, the company that processes the transactions. Stop Counting, Start Living By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Last time I checked the calendar, it was August. Not back-to-school, not Halloween, and certainly not Christmas. And yet, if you look in the stores these days, you would think it was time to start digging out the decorations and making those shopping lists. I’m all for preparation and not waiting until the absolute last minute, but isn’t this all a little much? When I was a student in school, I didn’t consider it the “end of summer” until the end of August, as Labor Day approached. The beginning of August meant that summer was still only half over, with

just over a month of fun in the sun remaining. Plenty of beach days, baseball games, outdoor concerts, BBQs… But for parents and teachers, I suppose this isn’t the case. It’s all about the mad dash to get back into some sort of routine. Of course, nowadays, my routine is pretty much the same throughout the year, summer or winter. But still, I try to revel in the slightly laid back atmosphere that this season brings. Instead of driving home in the dark to sit on the couch in front of the TV, the added daylight hours provide some motivation to check out one of the many waterfront dining options

on Long Island, or perhaps attend one of the free summer concerts featured at the area parks. (Just don’t forget to check the weather forecast before heading out!) It’s August 6th. AUGUST 6th. Absorb it. Savor it. Live it. Stop checking the days off the calendar in a manic countdown to the next socalled marker of time… time that, before you know it, will have passed, un-enjoyed. So put away the Christmas lights, hold off on the pumpkin picking and don’t pack the bathing suit away quite yet. Relax. You’ll have plenty of time for all that in a few months. But not now.

Since 2007, Canstruction® Long Island has held its annual competition where teams of design and construction professionals, college students and middle and high school students led by architects and engineers, showcase their talent and creativity by creating giant, selfsupporting structures out of cans of non-perishable food. Student Teams are mentored by professionals in the architecture, engineering, design and construction fields, which

provides the younger students with exposure to these potential career fields at an early age, and gives the older students an opportunity to develop relationships with professionals that they can possibly intern or interview with in the future. The structures are on display to the public for 10 days, after which the cans are donated to Long Island Cares, Inc. – The Harry Chapin Food Bank to feed the more than 300,000 Long Islanders that are affected by hunger and/or food insecurity. Attendees

are asked to bring one can of food for admission to the exhibit to also be used cast their vote for the “People’s Choice” Award. They use their talents to both support and inspire one another, creating an open environment for discussion, collaboration and mutual success. Creative writing students, for example, work with musical theater students to develop original productions, giving writers time in the spotlight and performers a stint in the director’s chair. Musicians create original compositions to accompany dance productions. The final week of the academy is a showcase of what the students have learned. The big finale includes a major art exhibit, the publication of a journal and an extravaganza of performances, from plays to cabarets.

Distant Memories Swim On July 23rd, approximately 50 swimmers and kayakers took part in the 11th Annual Distant Memories Swim. The swim was spearheaded by Bryan Proctor, a Huntington resident who started the swim as a way to raise money for Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. and to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s Disease. This issue is very close to Mr. Proctor, as his grandfather and aunt passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease. The participants started out at Asharoken Beach and swam across the bay to Knollwood Beach in Centerport — a distance of 2.5 nautical miles (approximately three miles). Before taking to the water, each participant gave the names of relatives they were swimming for who suffer from or passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease. The first swimmer to complete the course was Daphne Hoffman of Brightwaters, who came in

at 1 hour, 10 minutes. This was the first time a woman has accomplished this feat. “This year’s swim signifies a very strong commitment to our cause by all of these men and women, many of whom have been touched by Alzheimer’s,” said Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Chief Executive Officer/ Executive Director, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. “Sadly, the number of individuals with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease continues to grow. Demand for training, programs, services and referral sources is at an all-time high.
