As of this writing, I have published 573 columns. During the course of those, it has often occurred to me that some – mainly those with more of a personal touch – would make a solid foundation for a mini-memoir of sorts, a highlight reel of those experiences which have shaped the last decade or so of my life. I recently took the time to scan through each one, briefly, with an eye on setting aside those which I felt were, at the very least, worth a second look. It’s amazing, when you read them one after another, how the narrative weaves together, providing a glimpse into whatever happened to be my thoughts at that particular moment in time. Sure, there were the fluffy, filler-type accounts of seasons changing and deadlines crunching, of miscellaneous

musings on life, and people; random rants and reader feedback. But among the hundreds were some solid accounts of current events, heartfelt profiles of loved ones, and momentous occasions in my life. And, of course, we can’t forget about Buddy’s 20 or so contributions to the cause, perhaps better suited for an illustrated children’s series in his own right. (We do know how he hates to share the spotlight.) This initial scan was just the first step; but, after two days of skimming, I had set aside close to one hundred of my favorites. Not a bad beginning. My hope, over time, is to provide the narration necessary to connect the dots, perhaps throw in some favorite quotations, photography to illustrate the progression… and see where it winds up.

It is, mostly, a project for me – a labor of love encompassing all those hobbies which I hold dear. Of course, if and when it all comes together, I would love to share it with my family and friends, and readers, if they would care to revisit this abridged anthology. In the interim, I welcome any feedback and suggestions those readers might care to offer – favorite columns, stories that stood out over the years, topics you would like to see covered in the coming weeks… anything at all. Keep equipment clean. Routinely clean dirt and debris out of air conditioning ducts and equipment. Pay special attention to organic matter, such as dirt, that may come in from outdoors.

Exposure to mold in a home can be hazardous, leading to any number of adverse health effects, including respiratory distress. Certain strains of mold may release mycotoxins, which can cause bleeding in the lungs and pneumonia. Mold can grow in any dark and damp spot, which makes air conditioning units prime locations for mold proliferation. Mold spores can be circulated through a home via a central air conditioning system or window air conditioning unit. Mold spores in the air are very easy to inhale, especially for young children and elderly people. Air conditioners also are susceptible to mold growth. Preventing mold from becoming a problem means being in tune to indicators that mold may be present, and then taking the necessary actions to eradicate that mold and preventing future growth.

Panels can face various directions with acceptable results. Homeowners

should not let the layout of their properties deter them from installing solar energy. • The addition of solar panels should not adversely affect the assessment value of a home, nor increase property taxes. • According to SolarEnergy, a resource on residential solar products, there may be different “tiers” of usage that determine utility companies’ rates concerning energy. The top tier may be removed from the billing formula when solar power is used in conjunction with an electric energy provider. Speak with a utility company representative to learn more. • Assess just how much energy you will need to determine which solar options will be available to you. In addition, make other changes around the house to reduce energy consumption, such as putting HVAC systems on timers, shutting off lights when leaving rooms, opening the drapes to let in more natural light, and replacing traditional light bulbs with more efﬁcient alternatives. forms of cancer among men. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. “Successful treatment of prostate cancer often depends on early detection. That is why it is so important for men to get screened annually. I thank the Integrated Medical Foundation for once again

Amnesty Extended The Village of Amityville’s parking amnesty has been extended to August 19th, 2016. In the interest of code enforcement, public safety, and to increase the flow of non-tax revenue, the Village of Amityville Board of Trustees will offer an amnesty program for open parking summonses returnable to the Village

Justice Court and issued between January 1st, 2004 and May 31st, 2016. The Village Court had been authorized to accept payments during the period of July 1st, 2016 through July 31st, 2016 at the reduced rate of 30 percent to assist qualified individuals- the deadline has now been extended to August 19th, 2016.

After this time period, penalties will be re-instated by the Court and all appropriate enforcement and collection procedures will be implemented, such as the Village Boot and Tow Program and a new program to block the ability of delinquents to renew vehicle registrations.
