Snapshots & Timehops By: Jamie Lynn Ryan At this time last year, I was in the midst of an eightday tour of Ireland with 13 members of my family. And today, thanks to the wonders of a clever little app called “Timehop,” I am able to relive each day of that memorable vacation via the handful of photos I posted on Facebook throughout the journey. And they say too much sharing is bad! Of course, this is but a small sampling of the nearly 1,000 pictures I snapped over the course of the week, from takeoff to landing and everything in between. Seeing as I

am slightly obsessed with finding random scenes and candid shots to capture on a daily basis, you can just imagine how thrilled I was to explore one of the most beautiful lands abroad. Under any circumstances, it qualified one of the greatest experiences of my life. Coupled with the fact that it marked my first time on a plane and my first journey out of the country, well, that just added to the highlight reel. Considering that, prior to this, I had never ventured beyond the span of states between Vermont and Virginia, it was quite a momentous occasion. This past Christmas, I

attempted to compile just a “few” favorites to create calendars and a small book of the journey as gifts. Seemed like a simple enough task; however, four hours after my initial brainstorm, I was still sitting at my computer, poring over hundreds of photos, comparing and eliminating until I had it narrowed down to the “perfect” mix. As if there was such a thing. The perfection is in the moments you create, the unplanned, unstaged instants that bring to life stories and anecdotes to last a lifetime. We could all use a few more of those.

Special Ceremony Greetings in more than 40 different languages were spoken as adult students prepared to receive certificates in a variety of courses at the annual awards ceremony for the Nassau BOCES Adult Learning Center (ALC). “Our students are incredibly proud of their individual performances,” said Patrick Silvestri, Assistant Principal of Adult Education. “It is a very personal journey and accomplishment for each participant, and they are happy to celebrate their

individual achievements together at this ceremony.” Eight-hundred students from over 40 countries received certificates honoring their achievement in English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, with some earning their High School Equivalency Diploma (HSE), and others passing the citizenship exam. Students also receive career training and hone specific skills that they will use in the work place. As part of the ceremony,

students sang “Brave” by Sara Bareilles. The lyrics, “Say what you wanna say and let the words fall out, honestly I wanna see you be brave,” show how the ALC helps students find their voice in the community and the courage to continue their education. Rosibel Shahin, originally from El Salvador, attended the Nassau BOCES ALC to learn English. “I now hold the highest position of National Sales Director at Mary Kay,” says Shahin. “Thank you Nassau BOCES!”

Although open fires are prohibited on the campground, a special allowance was made for these Cub Scouts so they could earn their “outdoorsman” badges. The scouts were required to help set up their tents, cook meals on an open fire, clean and sanitize

the cookware, and most importantly, clean up in order to “leave no trace” of their stay. “Leave no trace” is a fundamental lesson taught to all scouts to raise awareness and teach them to take responsibility for the world around them. FIRST PLACE - Michael Lantino, age 11, just returned home from the 2014 AAU Tae Kwon Do National Championship in Ft. Lauderdale Florida. Michael won a gold medal in the 10-11 age division for Black Belt competitors. For the 10-11 year old athletes, this event served as Team Trials.
