of the Seaford Harbor and Manor school and I believe that we are an improved learning community because of it.” Dr. Pecora said that the Habits of Mind have also proven beneficial as Seaford navigated its way through the COVID-19 pandemic. “The habits have assisted us in our commitment to stay open for full, inperson instruction this year,” she said. “The entire Seaford Harbor and Manor communities demonstrated the habits of persistence, thinking flexibly and listening with understanding and empathy. And quite frankly, at times, we needed to find humor.” The creators of the Habits of Mind, Dr. Art Costa and Dr. Bena Kallick, participated in the virtual assembly. Dr. Costa noted that the Habits of Mind will serve students throughout their entire lives. Dr. Kallick, who has provided professional development workshops in Seaford, encouraged Harbor and Manor to take advantage of pen pal opportunities with other schools that have received the Learning Community of Excellence designation. Teachers throughout the elementary schools have embraced Habits of Mind over the last four years. Harbor fifth grade teacher Kerry Hansen said her class focuses on Habits of Mind in different ways. On Mindful Mondays, Ms. Hansen asks them to reflect on how they can use different habits to handle certain situations.

“My goal is to incorporate Habits of Mind thinking in to at least one subject a day,” she said, “so that the habits and their uses become an integral part of everyday thinking and problemsolving for my students.” Manor first grade teacher Angelina Lee said the habits are incorporated into every school day in her classroom, as well. She noted that persistence is Habit No. 1 for reason, because it reminds students to keep trying, even when something seems impossible. For example, she said, her students are introduced to new and tricky words. By persisting, they are able to learn these words, expand their vocabularies and grow as readers and writers. Students also use Habit No. 6, strive for accuracy, to double check their math work, and Habit No. 10 gather data through all senses, is good advice for science activities. “Habits of Mind have truly changed the way students view learning, the way they take on challenges and how they interact with others,” she said. “The Habits have given the kids confidence, self-control, a growth mindset, empathy and so much more.” Manor School also created its own book, “Habits of the Manor Mind,” with contributions from every class on the 16 habits. Each family in the school received a copy of the book, which was dedicated to Dr. Pecora and Dr. Kallick.

Four years ago, the Habits of Mind were introduced in the Seaford School District, and those 16 qualities of effective learners quickly became a way of life. Now, Seaford Harbor and Manor elementary schools have each been designated as an International Habits of Mind Learning Community of Excellence by the Institute for Habits of Mind. The recognition was presented during a pair of virtual assemblies on June 18. Students and teachers tuned in from their classrooms to hear the announcement. They also saw a video featuring administrators and teachers, talking about the Habits of Mind and how those behaviors have benefitted the Seaford learning community. Bringing the Habits of Mind to Seaford was one of Dr. Adele Pecora’s first initiatives as superintendent. She thanked Harbor Principal Thomas Burke and Assistant Principal Caroline Schozer, and Manor Principal Debra Emmerich and Assistant Principal Mary-Ellen Kakalos, for their leadership in creating school communities that value the Habits of Mind. The Learning Community of Excellence designation lasts for three years. “I offer a heartfelt thank you for students, teachers, staff, parents and board of education for their willingness to remain open to continuous learning,” Dr. Pecora said. “Habits of Mind are woven within the fabric

Through his involvement in city’s Leadership in Education Apprenticeship Program, he earned his school building leadership certificate. He is a member of several professional organizations including the American Educational Research Association, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the Long Island Council for the Social Studies, the School Administrators Association of New York State and the Council of School Supervisors and Administrators. In the 2015-16 school year, he was one of only 12 city teachers to earn an Educator of Excellence award from the United Federation of Teachers. At Seaford High School, Dr. Morey will serve as the testing coordinator and as the liaison to the art, business, math, music and social studies departments. He will also oversee the sophomore and senior

classes, among other responsibilities. Dr. Morey said he was drawn to Seaford High School because its size. With fewer than 800 students, it is similar his previous school, and he appreciates the strong relationships that can be built within a small school. From his initial interview to his first week on the job, he observed how the community comes out to support and celebrate the accomplishments of Seaford students whether they be academic, artistic or athletic. “I have quickly come to appreciate how much pride the community has in the high school,” he said. “I’m excited to join a community that shows so much support for the school because it means the work we do in our building has a resounding effect throughout all of Seaford.” Dr. Morey added that he is proud to be part of an administrative team with Ms. Schnabel and fellow Assistant Principal Jennifer Bisulca that is dedicated to supporting students and staff. He said that they are passionate educators, strong leaders and a “great group to work alongside and to learn from.”

Seaford Principal, Secretary Receive Honorary Diplomas During Scott Bersin’s 12 years as an administrator in the Seaford School District, including nine as high school principal, he was well-known for two things – unwavering support for his students and frequently saying “Go Vikings!” Mr. Bersin is leaving Seaford to assume a new role as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District. To recognize his service to the district, he was presented with an honorary diploma at Seaford High School’s graduation ceremony on June 26 at the Tilles Center. He came to the district in 2009 and served one year as Seaford Middle School assistant principal before moving to the same position at the high school. Mr. Bersin was then elevated to principal when Michael Ragon retired in 2012. John Striffolino, Seaford’s assistant superintendent for

curriculum, instruction and personnel, thanked Mr. Bersin for the tremendous impact and influence he had on the high school’s program and students. Aware of Mr. Bersin’s love of sports, he used a sports analogy in his remarks to graduates and guests. “There is an expression in the world of athletics used sometimes to describe a coach as a players’ coach,” Mr. Striffolino said. “This type of coach embraces each of his or her players and enables them to have a say in how the team operates. Well, the way I see it, Mr. Bersin has always been a students’ principal. The students have always been at the center of his efforts and thinking.” Mr. Striffolino added that Mr. Bersin was an extremely caring and dedicated principal who connected with his students and valued their voice. Superintendent Dr. Adele Pecora also commended Mr. Bersin for his leadership of the high school. She noted

his strong commitment to growing academic and extracurricular opportunities for students. During Mr. Bersin’s tenure, the school expanded its course offerings in every subject area. Students were able to take advantage of more art classes, a robotics program and expanded research opportunities in English, science and social studies. The addition of new Advanced Placement level courses has allowed students to complete higher-level work. After accepting his honorary diploma, Mr. Bersin then presented one to his secretary, Karen Hughes, retiring after 15 years in the district. Ms. Hughes, a Seaford High School graduate, worked as a clerical assistant in the library, secretary to the assistant principals and, for the past three years, as secretary to the principal where one of her major tasks was coordinating graduation.

Dr. Raphi Morey, with 10 years of experience as a secondary educator, is the newest member of Seaford High School’s administrative team. He started as assistant principal on July 1, taking over the position from Nicole Schnabel, who was promoted to principal. For the past nine years, Dr. Morey taught at Kingsborough Early College Secondary School in Brooklyn, which serves grades 6-12. He was a social studies teacher, a department chair, a technology learning coach and a peer collaborative teacher. Some of his leadership responsibilities included data analysis, writing curriculum for a school advisory program to support social and emotional learning, planning professional development workshops for teachers and helping implement a 1:1 technology initiative. He also coordinated international trips for four years, taking students abroad to Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Dr. Morey, a native of Philadelphia and now a resident of Plainview, earned his bachelor’s degree in history from the

According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.
