“Kinexion, (pronounced “connection”), is a brand new management service organization (MSO) on Long Island that oversees seven separate non-profits and provides them with infrastructure that frees them up to focus on what they do best, which is to offer best-in-class services to individuals with disabilities and progress society to a point where it embraces people of all abilities. Last week we featured two more the seven non-profits they oversee, this week you’ll learn about the remaining three. Angela’s House, located in Hauppauge, is one of those seven nonprofits they oversee. This organization was created to offer families and professionals an agency to call to help medically frail children and their families. Angela’s House has helped to simplify home care options for families by coordinating the extensive array of services needed to support medically frail children at home. “We have worked very hard to create new programs and opportunities for medically frail children,” said founder Bob Policastro, who opened the first home in East Moriches in 2000, and named after his daughter, who suffered severe brain damage during birth. “Over the years we’ve received tremendous support from Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg, and have worked in collaboration with IGHL, Independent Group Home Living, to provide these services. We now operate more than 50 homes, multiple day programs and many other supportive programs for individual with intellectual disabilities.” Another affiliate of the Kinexion network is East End Disability Associates (EEDA) in Riverhead, which also provides support and services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This organization formed in 1992 by a small group of parents who were active advocates for their children and believed that everyone has the right to

fully participate in quality education, medical, habilitation and recreational services for more than 750 people. Rounding out the seven affiliates of Kinexion is Maryhaven, whose vision is to foster a community whereby people with special needs are safe, accepted and supported. This nonprofit offers a full range of services, including residential, day habilitation and vocational training to promote independence, individuality, integration and social connections. “Our 29 Community Residential homes offer a warm and secure environment where people with special needs can live comfortably,” said Charles Vanek, III, Executive Director of Maryhaven. “Additionally, our Day Habilitation program and our Integrated Business Center provide the platform to attain personal growth and the highest quality of life by teaching daily living skills and offering them community integration opportunities as well as an environment whereby individuals with disabilities work alongside non-disabled workers.” If you would like to learn more about Kinexion or any of the seven non-profits they oversee, please visit www.kinexion. org.

Seaford Names Pair Of Assistant Superintendents

The Seaford School District announces the appointment of two central administrators for the 20222023 school year, a familiar face and a newcomer to the district. Tom Lynch has been promoted to assistant superintendent for curriculum and technology, while Dr. Sheena Jacob joins Seaford as assistant superintendent for human resources and instructional support. Mr. Lynch joined the district four years ago as the executive director for instructional technology and STEM. During that time, he has overseen several initiatives including the expansion of the Personal Digital Learning Initiative to provide laptops to all secondary students, and the implementation of Project Lead the Way, a hands-on science and engineering initiative in grades K-6, and the creation of a dual Regents Earth Science and Advanced Placement environmental science course for ninth graders. Under his leadership, Seaford resequenced its secondary science program so all students take Living Environment in eighth grade, Earth Science in ninth grade and have access to chemistry in 10th grade and physics in 11th or 12th grade. This was done while revamping course curricula to align with new state standards. Mr. Lynch also supported the efforts of the high school science research teachers to expand the program, which has resulted in more students entering and placing in regional competitions. “During my four years in Seaford I’ve grown to love the community and the programs that we offer and I’m looking forward to creating new opportunities for our students at all grade levels and in all subject areas,” he said. Before coming to Seaford, he was the director for science, engineering and technology for grades

A K-12 civic education program that she helped establish received a national excellence award in 2022. She holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary education social studies from Temple University, a master’s degree in secondary education social studies from Columbia University, a master’s degree in education in educational leadership and administration from the College of St. Rose and a doctorate in instructional leadership from St. John’s University. She belongs to several professional organizations including the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, New York State Education Culturally Responsive Education

Walsh Invites Scouts To Help Reduce Water Pollution Through New Environmental Program To help reduce water pollution in our town, Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh invites Scouts to participate in the Town’s new Strom Drain Medallion Marker Program. This program involves the placement of green medallions, with the slogan “only rain in the drain” onto the face of Town storm drain covers, thus reminding residents how critical it is for the safety of our waterways that only rain pass through curbside storm drains. “As water flows from outdoor surfaces like streets, parking lots, and driveways, it enters curbside storm drains that eventually discharge directly into our waterways. There is no treatment process before this water

reaches a river, lake, or other water body, so any litter that comes in contact with it is transported along with the clean water,” Councilwoman Walsh said. “Contaminants are then able to enter into the Long Island Sound, South Shore Bay, and other bodies of water where swimming and boating take place. Therefore, it is vitally important for our water quality and environmental state that these contaminants never enter our waterways, which is why the Town launched this educational initiative.” The Town of Oyster Bay Department of Environmental Resources will provide volunteers all necessary supplies, including the medallion,

adhesive glue to attach the medallion to the storm drain, a map of storm drain locations that need a medallion, and safety instructions. Scouts can choose to place medallions in their local community or be assigned a location in the Town of Oyster Bay. Spring and Summer offer the best weather for this initiative. Seaford High Showcases Students Many Talents Whether they were delving deep into research, tapping into their creative side or learning another language, students from Seaford High School have been broadening their horizons over the past year. Their work was celebrated at An Evening of Student Showcases on June 13, which featured numerous academic presentations. Students from the Science Research program displayed their posterboard projects in the library and spoke a little bit about the topics they explored this year. This year, 22 students worked on 18 research projects under the guidance of teachers Janine Cupo and Mary Simons. Fifteen of those projects were entered into at least one science competition. Outside in the hallway, juniors from the Advanced Placement Research class showcased their yearlong projects. Teacher Tania Cintorino said 21 students took the class, which is the second half of the AP Capstone program. They finalized their research topics by November, spent a few months collecting data, then turned in their papers and gave their oral presentations in the spring. Ms. Cintorino noted that students chose topics related to their interests such as cars, cheerleading and music. Many also explored the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. “This year, more than ever, they really went the route of

personal interest,” she said. “It makes the project better if you are invested in it.” Junior Will Cascio was enrolled in both science and AP research this year, and was able to use the same topic – how two stars interact with each other in an eclipsing binary system. While the presentations were different based on the course requirements, having the resources from both classes was a benefit. Science research was where he focused on content knowledge while AP Research helped with his writing. “We worked so hard on these projects and it’s really cool to be able to show them off,” Will said of the student showcase. The band room featured a display from seniors in the AP art class. Teacher Curtis Tripoli said that each student’s work had to answer their individualized inquiry question. He noted that the class is not where students learn new techniques, but rather take all the art skills they have been learning since kindergarten and create a portfolio that reflects their specific creative interests. Peter Koubiadis did his sustained investigation on comic books and superheroes, and said some of his pieces were based on the memories of his initial interest in comics. Seeing all of his pieces come together on two large display boards was very rewarding.

This year, Seaford will graduate the first class of students to earn the Seal of Biliteracy designation on their diploma. At a medal ceremony, 14 seniors were recognized for this achievement which demonstrates their mastery of English and at least one world language. Eight students earned the seal in Spanish and six in French. Spanish teacher Patricia Foley and French teacher Ina Ionescu presented the certificates, medals and gift boxes to Evan Block, Jack Brown, Madison Elias, Christopher Lopez, Ricky Marcelino, Alexander Peraino, Jack Pidherney, Angelina Pires, Rayann Ramoutar, Annarose Romanelli, Chelsea Russo, Paul Schultz, Rabeya Shahid and Peter Toscano. Each student had to do a world language project on a topic related to science and technology, and verbally present it in that language. Annarose said the hardest part was answering questions from the panel of teachers in Spanish, as she didn’t know what would be asked, but she and her fellow Seal of Biliteracy candidates all succeeded. “Learning other languages is important to connecting different parts of the world, and understanding other people and their cultures,” she said. “Working toward the Seal of Biliteracy was a really rewarding process and I’m glad I did it.”

Music Courses Music courses can have a profound impact on students, potentially helping them perform better in other subjects. A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that high school students who take music courses score significantly better on exams in subjects like math and science than their nonmusical peers. The improved academic performance was more pronounced among students who learned to play an instrument rather than vocal music. The researchers behind the study examined the records of more than 112,000 students in British Columbia. Among the students whose records were studied, 13 percent had participated in at least one music course in grade 10, 11 or 12. Researchers discovered that, on average, children who learned to play a musical instrument for many years and ultimately played in a high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of roughly one academic year ahead of their peers in regard to their English, mathematics and science skills.
