Rebuilding Together Long Island (RTLI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. RTLI works yearround with their focus on keeping people safe in their home, as well as making sure that they have safe access into their home. While most of their clients are elderly, they will help anyone who meets their income guidelines and classify as low-income with limited assets. Additionally, they have a special program to help our deserving veterans in need. As a way to thank them for their service, they created the Hero Home Improvement Program, which aligns with their mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. There are many ways that you can become involved with RTLI, whether that be individually or as a company! Corporate sponsors are a huge help to the organization and it can benefit your company greatly as well. Corporate sponsors are companies that make the decision to fund a RTLI project for someone in need. Their employees will be able to participate in hands on work with the project they sponsor so their company can

have the chance to take part in a team building and community leadership opportunity. When they become a corporate sponsor, companies will get to see immediate positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled individual or a family in need, while demonstrating their company’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life right here on Long Island. These sponsors will also get acknowledged on the RTLI website, in their quarterly newsletter and on social media. Additionally, if you are a business professional and are interested in getting involved with Rebuilding Together Long Island, the opportunity is available. RTLI is now interviewing business professionals to become an integral part of their Advisory Board and help advance their mission, whether it be through financial contributions, in-kind donations, networking capabilities or another way. Lastly, this organization is looking for people to fill the following volunteer positions: Crew Members, Electricians, Plumbers and Home Visitors. Run, walk, spin and hop are all actions encouraged in the new movement pathway at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. It was created in partnership with the PTA as a way of encouraging

and has several twists and turns before reaching the end. Students can follow straight, curved and zig zag lines, hop five times each on their right and left feet, and do jumping jacks. At one point they crab walk, using both their arms and legs to scoot across the ground and building upper body strength in the process. PTA members Cindi St. George and Sue Perakakis spearheaded the project, and they were joined by numerous parent volunteers to paint the movement pathway in early June. The idea was to create a unique space for Unqua students that incorporated exercise and movement without requiring any balls or supplies. Physical education teacher Melissa Osborne said it is a great addition to the playground area and can help students improve their agility and balance. It is an activity that can be done independently or with a group of friends. While it is great for all ages, Ms. Osborne said she plans to use the movement pathway next year in physical education classes with her younger students to help them develop their motor skills.

Seaford High School was designated as a Recognition School by the New York State Education Department for the 2018-19 school year. An Enriching Experience An eight-day trip to an artist village in China was the experience of a lifetime for two art teachers in the Seaford School District. Melinda DiGiovanna and Jamie LaSota were selected for the program through the through the Hua Quan Village Art and Culture Foundation and were part of a 20-person team under the guidance of Seung Lee, the director of fine arts at LIU Post. Ms. DiGiovanna teaches at Seaford High School and Ms. LaSota is at the high school and Seaford Manor Elementary School. Since returning from the late May trip, they have presented at faculty meetings to share their experiences. “Picking the best part of it, I don’t know that I can,” Ms. DiGiovanna said. “It felt like we were at an art resort.” Hua Quan Village hosted several artists in residence during their trip and the teachers got to watch them create. They also were able to attend a gallery opening for those artists. Additionally, Ms. DiGiovanna and Ms. LaSota got to see British artist Julian Beever complete a permanent art installation in the village. When he was done, he spent time with the group of visiting art educators. The teachers helped create artwork that will be on

display in China for years to come, completing individual pieces and contributing to group projects. Professor Lee created a drawing on 20 small panels and every artist in his group was able to paint one. Local high school students visited the studio and each chose his or her favorite panel to recreate on large scale, working with the art educators in Professor Lee’s group. The completed mural was brought to their school to display. “It was such a great experience because even though we spoke different languages, we were all able to communicate through art,” Ms. LaSota said. Ms. DiGiovanna and Ms. LaSota learned much about Chinese culture by taking different classes taught by visiting artists such as Chinese painting, pottery and calligraphy, as well as, Chinese medicine, cooking and yoga. They visited the Great Wall of China, an experience they described as incredible and surreal, and documented their tour by taking pictures to share with their students and colleagues in Seaford. After returning from their trip, the teachers said that their students were very curious about their experience and had many questions about the cultural differences between the

United States and China. Ms. DiGiovanna said that the walls of the artist village were covered in artwork, and she wants to work with Seaford High School’s mural club to create more art throughout the district. The goal is to have each school create a mural inspired by the Miracle Mural in Hua Quan Village. Using their experiences from this trip, Ms. DiGiovanna wants to add a calligraphy unit to her art classes, while Ms. LaSota plans to further incorporate Chinese culture into Manor’s annual International Week celebration. “The expectation is that we take what we have learned from our stay at the village about the Chinese culture and share it when we return home,” Ms. LaSota said. “This is an important concept to share with our students as it relates to any experience. It is a good routine to practice — being open to learning something new.” Ms. DiGiovanna and Ms. LaSota added that they are very grateful for the opportunity and support they have received from the district and community, and will apply what they have learned from this experience for a very long time.

They Will Surf Again 100 People Living with Paralysis Will Surf at Rockaway Beach on Saturday, July 27, 2019. Life Rolls On presents, “They Will Surf Again,” its signature quality of life program for people with disabilities. The event is free for adaptive athletes and their families, and takes place at the beach on Beach 67th St. in Rockaway Beach. Participants are welcomed at 8:30 am, and the Adaptive Surf Clinic goes from 9:00

am to 4:00 pm. Registration is required. Founded by world champion quadriplegic surfer Jesse Billauer, Life Rolls On began in 2001 in Santa Monica CA, and now presents an annual tour of 12 events on the West Coast, Gulf Coast, and East Coast. Each “They Will Surf Again” event attracts 100 adaptive surfers, 400 volunteers, and hundreds of cheering supporters.
