Nearly 700 students from across Long Island graduated from the Joseph M. Barry Career and Technical Education Center (Barry Tech), during a June commencement ceremony held at Long Island University. The new grads will head off into their respective career fields, or to post-secondary schools to further pursue their studies in career and technical education (CTE). A pair of inspirational and motivational students spoke to the Class of 2013, honoring their time at Barry Tech and offering words of advice for the future. Packing Science By: Jamie Lynn Ryan When did packing become such a source of stress? Used to be, you could throw whatever you wanted into a suitcase, head to the airport shortly before flight time, have your family see you off at the gate and be on your way. Not so much anymore. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for the added security. It just seems like, in an effort to make air travel safer for all, it has become extremely inconvenient for most. But, short of taking a transAtlantic cruise, it still serves as the quickest, most viable option to get where you want to go. So that leaves us to suck it up and deal with whatever

hassles come along with our “relaxing” vacations. Having never flown before, this process has proven to be quite complicated, what with all the new rules and regulations – carry-on vs. checked baggage, ounces of liquids, Ziploc bags, and on and on… I must say, this is one time when the wealth of information available on the Internet has proven to be pretty useful. Nothing like hearing tips from those who have been there and done that already. But still, at the end of the day, once all the criteria are comprehended, there is still the small matter of fitting everything into one suitcase, preferably one that weighs

slightly less than a 12 yearold. Because, let’s face it – you can pack it, but can you carry it? Unless you’re traveling to some remote Third World country, chances are you will be able to purchase anything that may have been left behind. It just may not be quite like the comforts of home that we’re used to, that’s all. By the time you read this, I will have (hopefully) figured out how to condense the mountain of “stuff” piled in the corner of my room into my suitcase and carry-on, preferably in a TSA-approved, somewhat convenient manner so as to not give myself a hernia when picking it up. One can only hope.

CARE events since its inception in 1988 and her loyalty and pride in WE CARE has been unwavering. She has played in many WE CARE golf outings and has won the tournament on two occasions. She is presently

Schlissel Golf and Tennis Classic to be held August 5th at Tam O’Shanter Golf Club in Brookville and The Mill River Club in Oyster Bay. One of the largest social gatherings of Long Island’s legal community, the WE CARE Classic attracts lawyers, judges, law students and business and civic leaders raising funds for local charitable causes. The funds raised are distributed through grants to improve the quality of life for children, the elderly and others in need throughout Nassau County. Minutes fly by – chores to finish before the end of my day. He reaches for my hand and says “thank you” and I knew what he meant. His eyes conveyed gratitude for my time, and when he smiled, I witnessed a glimmer of a younger man. The sentiment “take care” is spoken, he softly says he’s hopes he can visit soon. Once again, he smiles. “I’ll be looking for you,” I say and I return the smile. Purpose, love, confident you still count.
