The Seaford High School Class of 2020 and the Seaford Middle School/High School PTSA recently came together to support a wellknown local charity. The PTSA presented a gift, on behalf of the senior class, to the John Theissen Children’s Foundation. Seaford resident John Theissen, whose foundation is based in neighboring Wantagh, visited the home of

senior class President Jessica Kofod on July 2 for the check presentation in the amount of $1,020. Joining them were class Vice President Max Newman, Secretary Ally McMahon, Treasurer Kelsey Conti, advisers Kim Flood and Shari Raduazzo and PTSA President Lisa Garcia. The PTSA raised money by selling customized lawn signs that parents could purchase to honor their

graduating seniors and advancing eighth graders. The sale of nearly 170 signs generated more than $2,000, which was split between the senior class and the children’s foundation. Mr. Theissen said that he plans to use the money for his annual back-to-school supply drive, ensuring that a donation on behalf of students would benefit other students.

Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life. This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events. Rhonda Klch, Executive Director of the Equity First Foundation has taken all necessary steps to get out of her comfort zone and attack COVID with her resources. As a women entrepreneur, she used her relationships, social media and community to power through this current pandemic. Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. The Equity First Foundation has three different types of programs that they offer:

Educational Institution Program This program focuses on k-12, post secondary, and trade schools with student types comprised of all abilities including special needs and developmentally disabled. It is offered as a workshop / assembly that can last for as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Each program is uniquely designed to fit the educational facility after a comprehensive needs analysis. Some sample topics that can be addressed are:

career options by salary, understanding money management, life skills, healthy financial choices, creating a budget, creating a savings account and more. Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program focuses on independent facilities, partnering charities and nonprofits, community centers, libraries, career fairs, guest speakers, events and more for all demographics. These are offered in as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Some sample topics are: first time home-buyer, understanding student loans, improving your credit, avoiding senior scams, understanding your retirement plan and more. Corporate Awareness Program This program focuses on a lunch and learn structure for 10 or more employees. Some sample topics are: paying off debt, understanding your 401K, saving for vacation, your family on a budget and benefits of good credit. Senator Gaughran Leads Senate Democrats In Letter To U.S. Senate Urging Extension of Unemployment Senator Jim Gaughran sent a letter, along with his colleagues in the State Senate Democratic Majority, to U.S. Senators McConnell and Schumer urging them to extend Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation, set to expire in New York on July 26th. Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation, the $600 weekly uninsurance benefit, was part of the CARES Act passed by Congress in

response to COVID-19. It has been a lifeline for individuals out of work and ineligible to receive traditional Unemployment Insurance, including independent contractors and small business owners. In leading his colleagues in this letter, Senator Gaughran said “It is imperative that the U.S. Senate follow the House of Representatives’ leadership and extend Federal Pandemic Unemployment

Compensation. FPUC has been a lifeline for countless families struggling to pay their mortgages or rent, and put food on their tables. Warm weather beckons people outdoors to enjoy the outdoors. However, when the weather gets too hot, prolonged time outdoors can adversely affect overall health. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke pose significant threats to anyone who spends ample time outdoors in hot weather. The Mayo Clinic says symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, rapid pulse, dizziness, fatigue, moist skin with goose bumps, muscle cramps, nausea, and headache. When someone suffering any of these symptoms does not immediately move

into a cool location, they may develop heatstroke. Heatstroke arises when one’s body temperature climbs to 104 degrees, according to Penn Medicine. A body at this temperature may experience damage to the muscles, heart, kidneys, and brain. Flushed skin, altered mental state and rapid breathing may occur when suffering from heatstroke. A notable symptom of heatstroke is that perspiration stops completely. Rehydration, cooling the body and loosening tight clothes can help prevent serious consequences.

Economic Opportunity Council Of Suffolk, Inc. Receives Federal Funding To Help Low Income Suffolk Residents The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc. (EOC of Suffolk) has received $1.7 million in federal funds to provide financial assistance to individuals and families facing economic hardships arising from COVID-19related disruptions. The funds are being made available to eligible Suffolk County residents

who have either lost their jobs, became temporarily unemployed, or faced financial difficulties because of the pandemic. The funds originate from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act – commonly known as the CARES Act – which is providing $41 billion in funding to supplement the nationwide

Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) program. Signed into law on March 27, the relief program aims to address the consequences of increased unemployment and economic disruption resulting from the COVID-19 virus. “The Coronavirus pandemic has triggered the most damaging economic crisis America has faced

in some 80 years,” said Adrian Fassett, CEO of EOC of Suffolk. “During this difficult period, these federal funds will help our organization fulfill our mission of promoting the economic self-sufficiency of Suffolk County residents.” An applicant’s eligible expenses can include food, funeral costs, rental expenses, broker fees,

utility expenses, medical expenses, retraining expenses, clothing, bedding, toiletries, and other expenses. Household income cannot exceed 200 percent of poverty guidelines. The determination of financial eligibility for CARES assistance does not factor in an applicant’s supplemental
