Controlling Costs For Consumers, Despite Record Setting Inflation Rates. Inflation rates are higher now than they have been in decades, and costs are impacting consumers and companies around the United States. Small businesses are struggling to keep pricing down and stay open. Many business owners are grappling with how to deliver customers the best quality products at the lowest price possible. We talked with local company Unified Home Remodeling, on how they are combating inflation to keep prices down during this time. Unified is leveraging its long-standing partnerships with national manufacturers to control costs and reduce unnecessary price hikes for consumers. Residents are invited to drop off unexpired, unused baby formula at Town Hall North (54 Audrey Ave, Oyster Bay) and Town Hall South (977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa) now through July 15th, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 9:00AM and 4:45PM. All donations will benefit families who are experiencing difficulty in finding formula as the nationwide storage continues. “Kinexion, (pronounced “connection”), is a brand new management service organization (MSO) on Long Island that oversees seven separate non-profits and provides them with infrastructure that frees them up to focus on what they do best, which is to offer best-in-class services to individuals with disabilities and progress society to a point where it embraces people of all abilities. “We created Kinexion to unite seven existing non-profits under one roof to eliminate duplicative overhead and back-office operations,” said Walter W. Stockton, CEO of Kinexion. “By being part of a large organization, these agencies get to participate in sharing in costs and saving money and in learning new things about providing the best services we can for the people that we serve.” One of those non-profits is Independent Group Home (IGHL), which opened its first group home in Mt. Sinai in 1978 to provide a community-based, homelike environment that encouraged personal growth and a genuine sense of belonging to a community for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Since then, IGHL has developed multiple community home opportunities, and a complete services network throughout Suffolk County. IGHL also runs Day Treatment programs, residential homes and communitybased residential homes to allow people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to experience living in a home environment while receiving the specialized care they require. “The goal of IGHL’s residential program is to encourage growth and independence while providing a genuine sense of belonging,” said Stockton, who is also President & CEO of IGHL. “We help each of our residents and program participants be as independent as possible. We teach

a variety of skills, including money management, cooking, travel training, and home management. We’ve been very successful in providing unique opportunities for individuals to live independent, productive lives in the community.” Another Kinexion afﬁliate is The New Interdisciplinary School, an innovative early childhood learning center that respects the unique needs of all children and their families. Started by a coalition of parents, community and staff in 1976, the school provides education and therapeutic services.

Exemplary Character Defines Patriot Award Honorees The 21st annual presentation of the Patriot Award recognized five Seaford High School graduates who exemplify service, character and commitment. Alexandra Leggio, Annarose Romanelli, Brooke Surace, Parker Surace and Bryant Wong were recognized at the June 25 graduation ceremony at Hofstra University’s John Cranford Adams Playhouse. The Patriot Award has been presented every year since 2002 in honor of the five Seaford High School graduates who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks – Thomas Haskell (Class of 1982), Timothy Haskell (1985), John Perry (1982), Robert Sliwak (1977) and Michael Wittenstein (1985). The five recipients are chosen

from dozens of applicants for best embodying the traits of those five men. Seaford 9/11 Memorial Committee President Ken Haskell, brother of Thomas and Timothy, announced the five award recipients, who each received a monetary scholarship. He explained that the five graduates did much good in their lives, which came from the communityfocused foundation they got growing up in Seaford. As seniors, Brooke and Parker were president and vice president, respectively, of student council, and Annarose was president of the Class of 2022. Bryant recently became an Eagle Scout and Alexandra was co-president of Best Buddies. The Patriot Award celebrates students

who have demonstrated exceptional character, a desire to serve their community and a commitment to helping others. Committee member Thomas Condon, a retired Seaford administrator, noted the Class of 2022 set itself apart with so many students, beyond the five recipients, who hold these virtues. He added that the scholarship is funded thanks to the support of Seaford alumni throughout the country who want to keep the memory of the five graduates alive. Alexandra, Annarose, Brooke, Bryant and Parker were also recognized at the annual Patriot Award dinner on June 28 at the Crest Hollow Country Club.

“At NIS, we believe in the rights of every child to grow and learn in a supportive environment, and the rights of parents to have a real voice in their children’s education,” said Jay Silverstein, Executive Director of NIS. “We are always willing to try new approaches that are compatible with our child-centered philosophy. We strongly believe each child, regardless of disability, ethnic background or socioeconomic status has the right to develop to his/ her fullest potential.” This organization offers classes ranging from small self-contained groups to larger inclusion classes. “In addition to being the law of the land for all children under 12 years of age in New York State, the decision to wear a lifejacket is one that can save a life,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Even the strongest of swimmers can be compromised or unable to find a life vest during a dangerous situation, which is why this event is so critical.”

Legislator Drucker, Long Island Cares, Chapin Family Support Bill To Establish July 16 As ‘Harry Chapin Day’ In Nassau County Nassau County Legislator Arnold W. Drucker (D - Plainview) joined Harry Chapin’s son, Josh, and leaders of Long Island Cares - The Harry Chapin Food Bank at the organization’s Essential Market in Bethpage on Monday, May 2 to unveil legislation that would designate July 16 as Harry Chapin Day in Nassau County. Not only would recognizing the acclaimed musician and humanitarian generate much-needed awareness about the prevalence of food insecurity in our region, Legislator Drucker’s proposal which is co-sponsored by the Legislature’s seven-member Minority Caucus - would also direct the County to partner with Long Island Cares and local community organizations to host an annual, three-week long food drive starting on July 16. Donations will also be accepted for Baxter’s Pet Pantry, a Long Island Cares initiative focused upon delivering emergency pet food and supplies to

struggling families. “Harry Chapin distinguished himself as a musical storyteller whose gift for capturing the human condition in song made him one of our most beloved and relatable entertainers,” Legislator Drucker said. “His talents as a musical storyteller are only eclipsed by his desire to help others and his remarkable mission to end hunger here on Long Island and around the world. I can think of no better way of celebrating his life’s work than by supporting the cause he so passionately advocated for.” “We are very grateful to Legislator Drucker for proposing that July 16th be commemorated as Harry Chapin Day in Nassau County. “Shootout for Soldiers” 24-Hour Charitable Lacrosse Game Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board will host the 8th Annual “Shootout for Soldiers” 24-Hour Lacrosse Benefit Game at the Town of Oyster Bay’s John J. Burns Park, located on Merrick Road in Massapequa. This year’s round-the-clock event begins on the morning of July 21st at 9am and continues non-stop for 24 hours until July 22nd at 9am. The event benefits veterans and active duty military personnel. The Long Island Air Force Association will conduct a special ceremony on July 21st at 5:00 pm to honor hometown Vietnam War veterans and present them with medals that commemorate their service to our nation. There will be a parachute landing on the field conducted by the “All Veterans Group,” which will deliver the official ball. Supervisor Saladino stated, “Shootout for Soldiers is a wonderful game that provides local lacrosse players a chance to enjoy a sport they love in a unique

way while also raising charitable funds to support the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces. Whether you enjoy lacrosse or are just looking for a fun-family event, I invite residents to be a part of the festivities.” The charitable funds raised at Shootout for Soldiers will benefit the Army Ranger Lead the Way Fund, the Long Island Air Force Association, and the Joseph J.
