Known equally for her cheerleading abilities and her leadership skills, Seaford High School junior Jordan Gilbert continues to earn recognition as a member of the Vikings varsity squad. Jordan was one of five students this year to earn the Keane Award from the Nassau County Coaches Association for excellence in cheerleading. It recognized her superior skills in jumping, stunting, tumbling

and overall technique, and well as her strong character. She was also an All-County selection in Section VIII and was named to Newsday’s 2019 All-Long Island team, garnering the Cheerleader of the Year award among Nassau County athletes. “Jordan has always been a leader,” coach Lisa Ferrari said, adding that the star

cheerleader sets an example with her willingness to learn and continually improve. As a seventh grader, Jordan became a member of the varsity cheerleading team. According to coach Ferrari, she was the first ever cheerleader in Seaford to be selected to the varsity squad that young. Jordan has been a captain in her

While their entrance to Seaford High School is still three years away, the district’s fifth graders recently got to visit the place where they will make major decisions about their futures. Elementary school moving up ceremonies were held in the auditorium on June 11 for the Manor School and June 13 for the Harbor School. First, they will head off to middle school where they will change classes, have lockers and pursue their interests in exploratory courses. Principals noted that the lessons the students have learned in elementary have prepared them for success. Harbor Principal Thomas

Burke cited the 16 Habits of Mind, and specifically highlighted three that he would like students to remember going forward: persistence, finding humor and responding with wonderment and awe. “Do not lose that love of learning,” he said. “Take the time to stop and enjoy all the wonderment and awe that the future will hold for you.” As a moving up gift, Mr. Burke presented each student with a mirror so they can “take a look at the person in the reflection and remember exactly who you are and where you are about to go.” Manor Principal Debra Emmerich reminded students to always be kind

and courteous, to dream big, to be a leader, the believe in themselves and to remember the golden rule in treating others with respect and dignity. She asked students to carry these values with them throughout their lives. Student speakers shared their memories including making new friends, going on field trips, learning about other countries, school performances and more. They said these moments are what made elementary school so special. “The memories in this school I will keep in my heart forever,” Kayla Frank said. “The Manor is a great place, but I’m excited to move up to middle school.”

The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. After featuring a powerful testimonial last week, I’d like to feature another testimonial this week to show just how much of an impact the work of this organization has on the Long Island community.

All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. High School Careers Close Out After making the most of their high school experience, a class of 170 seniors came together for the final time on June 28 to celebrate all of their accomplishments. Seaford High School’s graduation ceremony was held at Nassau Community College with hundreds of family and friends in attendance to honor the Class of 2019. Principal Scott Bersin said that each class has a distinct personality, and what set this year’s group apart was their focus, energy and involvement. New classes, clubs and sports teams debuted during their four years at Seaford High School and they took advantage of those new opportunities,

as well as all of the existing programs. “I cannot remember a class in my nine years at Seaford High School that did so much,” Mr. Bersin said. “We will miss you greatly. The school has been blessed to have you.” The senior class presented its traditional gift to the school, using its excess funds. In addition to presenting next year’s freshmen class with $250 in startup money, they will buy two birdbaths for school grounds. Seniors heard congratulatory remarks from State Senator John Brooks (Class of 1968), Town of Hempstead Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney (Class of 1991),

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, County Legislator Steve Rhoads and County Comptroller Jack Schnirman. There were also several award presentations, culminating with the Seaford 9/11 Memorial Committee’s five Patriot Award recipients. Assistant Principals Jennifer Bisulca and Nicole Schnabel announced each graduate as well as his or her club participation, volunteer work, achievements and post-high school plans. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Adele Pecora and Board of Education President Bruce Kahn presented the diplomas.
