As we head into the 4th of July holiday, allow me to share some excerpts of a column from the archives, written back in the fall of 2005, just a few short months after I began my tenure here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers… I met Don Mattingly. No, let me elaborate…I didn’t just meet him; I interviewed him, one-onone, for a solid fifteen minutes. Don Mattingly, one of my favorite players of all time…a living legend. And I did it while working for this very newspaper. The opportunity came about after I received an e-mail at work regarding a local autographsigning event. My initial reaction? When I went home that day, I excitedly announced to my mother, “I want to go! Wouldn’t that be cool? I can get his autograph!” My mother just looked at me, perplexed, and said, “You can cover it, can’t you? You

I proceeded to go down my list of questions. To my pleasant surprise, Mattingly answered each one thoroughly, pausing to consider his answers first, and then carefully explained his responses in great detail – definitely not your typical 15-second sound bite. It was as if I had known him for years. He was a true gentleman, full of class, and extremely humble. The image absolutely matched the reality. Considering he had just been signing autographs for a solid three hours – twice as long as scheduled – he gave no impression of being bothered by any of it, no impression of being “above” such things as an interview with a local paper that he had probably never heard of. On the way home that night, my mother asked, “So, did you ever imagine you would have the chance to interview Don Mattingly while working for your hometown paper? Never in my wildest dreams.

work for the paper, remember?” Oh. Right. The next day, I contacted the public relations firm that had put out the press release and was told that, yes, they would love for someone from our paper to cover the event, and would I maybe like to speak with Mr. Mattingly prior to the signing? Would I?! Was that even a question? By the time Mattingly arrived at the event, the line was already stretched around the building, with more people arriving every minute, and so I was forced to wait until the very end to do the interview. It was worth the wait. Once the crowd dispersed, the few people remaining headed into the back of the store where more items were lined up for Mattingly to sign for charity. A girl who worked for his agent explained to him who I was and would he mind answering a few questions while he signed? “No, not at all,” he replied in that soft Indiana accent of his, and motioned for me to stand next to him at the table.

Division Avenue High School Student Council President Nicholas Fuchs and Vice President Shelby Rickard welcomed the eighth-graders to the high school and made an attempt to allay their fears. Their advice included joining as many clubs as possible and asking questions. “This is where you will find out who you are,” Nicholas said. “This is where I learned the most important lessons in my life. As a Blue Dragon, I became the best I can be.” Class officers Scott McKinnon and Imani Thomas reminisced about their years at Wisdom Lane Middle School and the lessons they have learned. Imani told her peers, “It is up to us to decide how to use the knowledge we received.” Scott urged his peers to “never be afraid to take a risk.” In addition, class officer Sara Schonmann presented the class gift, a welcome mat for the school’s front door. The class officers then called each graduate to the stage to receive a certificate, and a Division Avenue High School lanyard from Nicholas and Shelby. They also shook hands with the staff, members of the Board of Education and administrators. After a special eighthgrade choral performance of “Come in from the Fireﬂy Darkness,” Mr. Avena made his closing remarks about always working hard, being respectful and being thoughtful toward family and friends. The new high school students then proceeded through the auditorium and joined their families for refreshments in the cafeteria.

Federal Funding Received As a result of a competitive process, The Children’s Community Head Start and Early Head Start has received grant funding through the Office of Health and Human Services to establish a Birth-to-Five program to provide education and support services to income eligible pregnant women, infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. The Birth-to-Five program will offer comprehensive child development, health/ wellness and family support services to promote school readiness by addressing the key domains of language, literacy, math, science, and social and emotional development. The program will also help parents move toward self-sufficiency and facilitate parent

engagement in their role as their child’s teacher and advocate through parent training and an emphasis on strong consistent working relationships that focus on family goals.
