By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Expanding upon my adventuring-into-NYC theme from last week, clearly, I prefer to get around on foot. Sure, weather can be a factor, or time, but as long as it’s somewhat feasible, walking the city streets can be one of the more enjoyable aspects of exploring Manhattan. Assuming, that is, you have the proper footwear. Do I speak from personal experience? Why, of course I do. This past autumn, my friend and I – both former dancers – decided to buy tickets to the NYC Ballet. It would be our very first time seeing such a professional-scale performance; plus it was a great excuse to spend the day roaming the city. We (somewhat) mapped out our excursions, deciding we would walk from Penn Station all the way up to Lincoln Center, meandering off-route periodically. The day was unseasonably

warm for late September (like, approaching 90º warm), but we forged ahead with our plan to brave the elements. The main stop I wanted to make was to Central Park, in the vicinity of Strawberry Fields. For those unfamiliar, that’s a solid 35 blocks. Not a problem, at first. The issue, one that we had failed to appropriately navigate, was getting through the park without traveling, oh, about 27 miles out of the way. That was the moment when my decision to wear heels really kicked in as the wrong choice. Pavement was one thing; rolling hills and dirt paths quite another. Let’s just sum up the experience by stating that, after wandering aimlessly for hours, stopping to rest at literally every single park bench we passed, I was in dire need of a shoe substitute. With our show at Lincoln Center fast approaching, we desperately scanned the stores as we made our way south.

Finally, I spotted a Duane Reade. They sell flip-flops, don’t they? Well, yes, they do. However, unless you have size 11 feet, they won’t do you much good. Desperately, I searched the racks for something, anything else that would fulfill my purpose – which, at this point, was not being forced to walk barefoot down the city sidewalks. Just when I had given up hope, there they were – a pair of size 9 (I’m a size 7) ballet slipper flats. Sold. And so off we went to Lincoln Center, shoes in hand. Classy. I found myself reflecting upon this fond memory as I prepared for yet another city trip, to yet another ballet performance at Lincoln Center, with the same friend, over the Fourth of July weekend. Plans were mapped out accordingly, including a detour into Central Park.

A juried art show in Port Jefferson this summer that will benefit the Fortunato Breast Health Center will feature works inspired by the personal transformation, hope, love, fear, loss and victory associated with breast cancer. John T. Mather Memorial Hospital is teaming up with the North Shore Art Guild, the Village of Port Jefferson and the Port Jefferson Conservancy to present “Artists United Against Breast Cancer”, a juried art show at the Port Jefferson Village Center from August 30th, 2015 to Saturday, October 31st. The show will have as its theme “Victors of Survival, A Celebration of the Warrior Within Each of Us.” “Victors of Survival is not just about breast cancer. It’s about personal transformation, the person you become having faced the experience,” said Mac Titmus, Vice President of the Art Guild and coordinator of the show. “It’s about the emergence of the warrior within you, and the struggle that brings it forth. It’s about you, the artist, and how you choose to transform that passion into expression.” Artists do not need to be a cancer survivor or family member of a survivor to participate. Hall of Fame Scholars The Long Island Music Hall of Fame has announced the awarding of four student scholarships to graduating Long Island, Brooklyn and Queens high school students who will be pursuing college music studies in the 20152016 academic year. “Long Island Music Hall of Fame is honored to have the opportunity to assist in the education of high school seniors who are pursuing a future in music,” said LIMHof Education Chairman, Tom Needham. The awardees are: Ethan Fields – 2015 graduate of Islip High School – French horn and voice. He has participated in NYSSMA all state groups, including the vocal jazz ensemble in 2013, symphonic band in 2014 and the All

Eastern symphonic band in 2015. He’s also been a member of Metropolitan Youth Orchestra and participated in all schoolbased music groups as well. Ethan will be attending SUNY Fredonia College in the fall for Music Composition and Sound. He says of himself, “Overall, my career goal is to become both a composer and a sound technician. I would love to write music for performance and media. This would allow me to be surrounded by music and musicians constantly and be up to date on everything that happens in the music world.” Crystal Kim – 2015 graduate of PlainviewOld Bethpage JFK High School – cello. She was the principal cello chair of the NAfME All-National

Honors Orchestra in Nashville, the second chair of All-Eastern Music Conference in Providence and was a member of the New York All-State Symphony Orchestra. She was named one of 20 Newsday Scholar –Artists. She said, “People always ask me why I want to do music rather than pursue an academic career in science or math. Music seems to be just about the most difficult of fields out there because there is never a right answer. There are so many interpretations of the same pieces so they can be right or wrong depending on what each performer thinks. It is up to them to decide which one is the correct answer. For me, this is a thrilling challenge. Although it is not easy to put myself under the spotlight and

wait to be criticized, but I just can’t wait for the moment when I am on stage and I can play effortlessly and still let out a rich and full sound from my instrument….I plan to become a cellist in a major orchestra upon graduation….” Sarah Miller – 2015 graduate of Locust Valley High School– cello and piano. She was an alternate in the 2013 AllState Orchestra and is a 2014-15 LI Arts Alliance Scholar Artist Award of Merit winner. She attends the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division and serves as principal cellist with the Manhattan Youth Orchestra. She has performed at Lincoln Center in the 31st Annual Young Musicians Concert where she presented H a n d e l - H a l v o r s e n ’s Passacaglia from memory.

Her student statement reads, “Next year I will be attending the Cleveland Institute of Music in order to pursue my dreams of becoming a professional cellist. Seeking a BA in Cello Music performance…aiming to attend a top school to earn a Master’s degree as well. My main goal is to become a performer who makes an impression on audiences that changes their outlook on music.” Patrick Wilhelm – 2015 graduate of Locust valley High School – vocalist. He studied at the Julliard PreCollege Division during the 2014-15 academic year. He has received a grant from the George London Foundation and was accepted as one of 14 new freshmen to the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia where he’ll receive a full

academic scholarship. He’ll study this Summer with Dalton Baldwin in southern France. He says, “I have been passionate about opera singing for several years and have come to the conclusion that I want to achieve two key goals from a career in professional singing. At a more macro level, these goals include a revitalization and re-installation of “antique” music into regular repertoire. Then on a more personal level, I would like to live a life where I am able to financially support myself doing what I love and share my passion with others. (I) perform baroque music (and am) seeking a career in music performance.”

Celebrating Advancement

Seaford School District was buzzing with excitement as family, friends and the school community came together for moving-up and graduation ceremonies for fifth-, eighth- and twelfthgrade students. Speeches, musical performances and awards presentations proudly showcased students’ achievements and the pride they have for their beloved schools. At the middle school, Eighth-Grade Student Council President Eric Schneider urged his classmates to never lose their childhood spark. “Be ambitious, be creative, be different, but most of all stay gold,” he said, referencing Robert Frost’s poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay.” Wearing green and white caps and gowns, 187 high school seniors crossed the

stage for their diplomas during the 58th Annual Commencement Exercises at Nassau Community College. Special guest speaker and longtime Seaford resident Rep. Peter King told graduates, “There’s no community better than Seaford; with the education you receive here, you will be prepared to be successful.” Taking the audience on a journey from pre-school to high school, Salutatorian Elena Alberti said, “Take the curiosity you had in pre-school and dare to find the knowledge the world has to offer.” Class of 2015 President Randy Licata, advised classmates to “have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.” And Valedictorian John DeFrancisci said to his peers, “We are now entirely responsible for our own

lives, but we can face tough challenges with the life lessons that Seaford has taught us.” After several awards were presented and the diplomas were handed out, the graduates tossed their mortarboards in the air and the arena thundered with applause. Top graduates will head to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Columbia University, Vassar College, New York University, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute this fall. Several others will attend Stony Brook University Honors College, Geneseo and other state colleges and universities. Some members will head to trade schools or the armed forces. Congratulations and best of luck to the Class of 2015!

MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS - Official Town of Hempstead Certificates of Recognition were presented to the distinguished scholarship recipients at the 14th Annual Bill Flanagan Memorial Scholarship Award Ceremony, hosted by CSEA Local 880 and held at the Merrick Golf Course in Merrick. This year, a record $45,000 was given away in scholarships to eligible children of town employees or town employees who attend college.
