Troop Takes D.C.
Boy Scout Troop 96 of Wantagh traveled to Washington DC for a fantastic four-day trip. The boys traveled all over DC via the Metro, starting with the Washington Monument, the WWII Memorial, Lincoln Memorial and more. The troop went to the Smithsonian the next day, visiting the Air and Space Museum. Some went on to see more of the
Smithsonian. Others took in a Washington Nationals game! To the delight of the Mets fans along on the trip, the Nationals lost to the Reds 6-2. The next day, they toured the Capitol and the Supreme Court. They also went to the National Archives, where the boys saw the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the Magna
Carta. Finally, on the last day, they went to Arlington Cemetery. They visited the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, saw the changing of the guard and visited the burial place of President John F. Kennedy and his family. Following that, they had an emotional tour of the Pentagon and the Pentagon 9/11memorial. It was a jam-packed fantastic few days in D.C.

Island Lighthouse, the Montauk Lighthouse or any number of tourist attractions in New York City, I always find a new angle to appreciate, a slightly different perspective to photograph. Of course, with a holiday such as the 4th of July, it’s always nice to view a few fireworks. With rare exception, this has generally meant sitting out on the deck in hopes that the neighbors had managed to obtain some sparkly explosives, or, if it wasn’t too crowded, taking a ride down to the local town beach to view the show from across the Bay. One year, a friend and I were inspired to check out the annual show at Eisenhower Park. After realizing that we should have probably allowed more time, resorting to parking on the side of Hempstead Turnpike and then wandering aimlessly around the park after having somehow missed the main entrance - we arrived. Or so we thought. We had literally walked into what was the staging setup for
the fireworks show. Talk about a front row seat. After hurriedly realizing this was not, in fact, the viewing area, we wound up walking/running what seemed like miles, following the distant sounds of explosions, until we came upon the rest of the crowd, who had most likely gotten there hours before. As we set up our blanket and settled down to watch what remained of the show, there was one final burst of color in the sky. And then… silence. The end. And that, ladies and gentlemen, was the first and last “real” fireworks show I have ever attended. A priceless memory nonetheless, one that is fondly reflected upon whenever the holiday nears. Here’s hoping everyone has a safe summer and enjoys whatever adventures it may bring. Just remember, you need not travel far to see beautiful sights… and make beautiful - if not brief - memories.

Summer is upon us, officially, and for some that means making a getaway to tropical islands, upstate resorts or seaside chalets; essentially, anywhere but here. For me, I look at this season of warmth and sunshine as a perfect opportunity to enjoy all that Long Island has to offer. Home sweet home, indeed. Buddy Program The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD), Long Island’s premier provider of substance abuse services and prevention programs is pleased to announce that Mr. Nelson Monica, a mentor in the LICADD BUDDY (Building Unique, Dynamic & Diverse Youth) has received Mentor of the Year from Mentor New York. Mentor New York, an affiliate of the National Mentoring Partnership, fuels quality mentoring relationships that match a caring adult with children in need through safe, effective mentoring programs throughout New York State. A special dinner, Mentoring Night Out, was held on June 22nd at the Bowery Hotel in New York City. Both Mr. Monica and his mentee, Miguel G. were in attendance. Celebrating
with them were BUDDY Program Coordinator, Lauren Laurore, LCSW and LICADD Board Chairman Michael Brennan and his wife, Donna. The BUDDY program matches children who have an incarcerated parent (or close relative) with an adult trained volunteer. The mentor meets with their mentee on a regular basis to provide guidance and support with the goal of building a trusting relationship. The BUDDY program has been in existed for seven years and is supported by fundraising efforts and grant foundations, Bank of America and The Richard and Mary Morrison Foundation. For 61 years, LICADD is Long Island’s premier nonprofit agency providing life-saving alcohol and drug prevention and intervention services
to at-risk children, individuals, and families across the region. With offices in Westbury and Holbrook, LICADD conducts screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment and relapse prevention services to individuals and families impacted by substance abuse. The agency also conducts evidence-based prevention programs, community outreach initiatives, a BUDDY mentoring program for children of incarcerated parents, and public policy advocacy at the national, state and local level. Polo Championship The United States Polo Association (USPA) has announced that the U.S. Open Arena Polo Championship will take place July 11th–22nd at the Country Farms Polo Club in Medford, New York. The 12-20-goal tournament serves as one of the highest levels of arena polo competition currently played in the United States. The tournament has a rich history dating back to 1926. In its inaugural year, it was won by the Yale University team made up of Reddington Barret, Winston Guest and William Muir. However, their champion status was quickly overtaken by Brooklyn Riding & Driving Club the following three years (1927-1929). Over the past 35 years, the tournament has been played alternately on the East Coast and West Coast at venues such as Shallowbrook Polo Club (New York), the Los Angeles Equestrian Center (California), Empire Polo Club (California), Great Meadow Polo Club
(Virginia), West Hills Polo Club (New York), California Polo Club (California), and most recently for the last five years, Country Farms Polo Club. In contemporary U.S. Open Arena polo competition, Cedar Croft Farms has garnered the prestigious title from 2013-2015, a significant feat, as only the second team in the history of the tournament to achieve three consecutive wins with the same team members. The young team consisted of Kris Kampsen, Team USPA member* Felipe Viana and Robert Ceparano. Last year NYC Polo including arena veteran Matias Magrini, Team USPA member Jared Sheldon* and Samuel Ramirez Jr. narrowly defeated Cedar Croft Farms in the final 17-15. “The USPA looks forward to this year’s tournament and hosting several teams that will represent the sport of polo to a wide audience on the USPA Polo Network,” said Duncan Huyler, USPA CEO. “We thank Country Farms for
their hospitality and efforts to host this historical tournament.” Polo fans are encouraged to attend this year’s games and cheer for their favorite team. Seven or more matches will take place regularly during the 11 days of the tournament. Tickets to the finals on July 22 are $5 in advance and $10 at the door and can be purchased at www.country-farms. com. All other games are free and open to the public. Moving to New Levels Seaford fifthand eighth-grade students transitioned to middle and high school during moving up ceremonies that celebrated the milestones. Fifth graders from the Harbor and Manor elementary schools received their moving up certificates before family and friends during ceremonies filled with
school memories, awards and recognitions, and performances by the school bands. Eighth graders welcomed New York State Senator John Brooks as the keynote speaker and listened to Student Council President Kelly Wylie deliver the eighth grade address. Several students crossed the stage to receive
awards, including the Student of the Year Award, which was presented to Kaylee Sanderson. Musical selections performed by the Eighth Grade Band and the Seventh Grade Band rounded out the ceremony. Among the songs they played were Randy Newman’s “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.”

Live lives of character.” After several public officials offered congratulatory remarks, some of whom were Seaford High School alumni, Salutatorian Evan Groder offered a four-chapter summary highlighting each year of high school, saying that by senior year, “we became true leaders and helped our school to thrive…the next chapters are yet to be written “so now let’s go and write that book.” Between speeches, numerous awards and scholarships were presented, including five $2,000 Patriot awards given to students who embody the qualities of the five Seaford alumni who perished in the 9/11 terror attacks. The four senior class officers presented the class gift, which consisted of “fence art” featuring
a Viking and the words, “Seaford Vikings,” and a $1,000 scholarship. Class President April Pensa urged her classmates to “never forget where you came from and never take your eyes off of where you’re headed.” Thanking her classmates for all the memories, she added, “Once a Viking, always a Viking.” Valedictorian Sarah Umstadt told her classmates, “It is now our time to go out, take what we have learned here and show the world what we are made of… So, to the class of 2017, “Thanks for the adventure, now go have a new one.” After all the students were given their diplomas, they moved their mortarboard tassels from right to left, then tossed their caps in the air as the arena thundered with applause. Congratulations, Class of 2017!
