Rebuilding Together Long Island
Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. There are countless testimonials from those who have received help from Rebuilding Together Long Island. Recently the organization received a letter of thanks for all their help that was extremely touching. The sender wrote, “I just want to reach out again to thank all involved with the preparation and construction of the ramp for my dad. It has been a sincere pleasure; from the first meeting with Marian and Kathy, to meeting Joe and coming up with the plan, and then witnessing the building process. The crew were all so wonderful and inspiring! I was amazed at how quickly and smoothly it all came together! Not only is the ramp functional, it’s beautiful and brightens up the dark patio! It was a great moment when I first wheeled my father down the driveway, onto the sidewalk, and
he raised up his arms with a big smile and loudly exclaimed “Hello world, I’m here!” I can hear my mom saying “God is good” and I want to add, thank God for good people.” With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! Equestrians Exhibit A Wide Range Of Talents
The South Farmingdale Water District (SFWD), which serves South Farmingdale, North Massapequa as well as parts of Bethpage, Seaford and Massapequa Park, has released its 2018 Drinking Water Quality Report, and is proud to announce that the District’s water meets and exceeds all local, state and federal standards, requirements and criteria. The report is required to be made public, in compliance with federal and state regulations. Compiled by a local engineering firm and a local laboratory service, in
conjunction with Nassau County Department of Health, this in-depth report contains valuable information regarding District water quality, treatment, sources, conservation measures, cost and water quality statistics. In a statement from the Board of Water Commissioners, “South Farmingdale Water District’s continuing goal is to provide our customers with quality, dependable drinking water each and every day. We’re happy to announce that there are no violations of any drinking
water standards. We encourage our consumers to request a copy of the report and share it with others.” The Board also added, “Our staff of water professionals follow strict procedures which contain quality control safeguards, including aggressive water sampling which is conducted weekly.” SFWD tests for over 300 compounds, including all new and emerging contaminants. What this means to consumers is that the water that flows from the tap goes through the most rigorous testing in the industry.

What does a school principal do? Five students at Seaford Manor Elementary School recently got a glimpse into the typical day of a building administrator when they shadowed Principal Debra Emmerich. Principal for a Day, a popular annual tradition at Manor, is typically one of the most coveted prizes in the silent auction at the PTA’s annual spring gala. This year, two families were winners. The two Damaskinos children had a full day with Ms. Emmerich on June 12, while the three Straker kids had the pleasure of helping her out for a day the following week. The students arrived early on
their respective days to help out with arrival by standing on the sidewalk with signs to direct parents. Once inside, they helped make the morning announcements. Third grader Maggie Damaskinos and her sister, Riley, a kindergartner, enjoyed their day with Ms. Emmerich as did fourth grader Kayla Straker and her younger siblings, Caden and Khloe, who are
in first grade. Among their tasks were making phones calls, visiting classrooms, making photocopies and doing inventory in the STEAM room. They all had lunch with Ms. Emmerich in her office and each student could invite one friend. Ms. Emmerich said that one task her principals for a day complete each year is conducting and analyzing student surveys.
Children throughout the building were asked to write down what they like about the Manor School as well as ideas for changes. This year, two common suggestions were increased time during the school day for physical activity and more clubs. Each student went home with a photo album documenting his or her day at the helm of the school.
