In the heat of summer, on the brink of the fourth of July, I can’t help but reflect upon that evening, two days prior to Halloween, when everything changed. Who knew that, as the last golden days of autumn drew to a close, a storm the likes of which few had ever seen would wreak such havoc – the kind that we, as residents of Long Island, are still attempting to recover and rebuild from over eight months later. Normal? What’s that? Sleeping in your own bed? Being able to walk through your house without tripping over piles of sheetrock? Funny

Haller, the 2013 Newsday-MSG Varsity Suffolk County Coach of the Year, has spent the last five years coaching the Girls Varsity at Commack High School. “I look forward to the challenge of continuing St John’s tradition of basketball excellence and the opportunity to become a part of the St. John’s family.” Coach Haller led Commack to a 15-3 record last year and a semifinal berth in the county Class AA playoffs where they succumbed in overtime to top seed North Babylon. In a season highlighted by handing eventual Long Island AA Champion Sachem East their only public school defeat, Commack’s trademark team defense held 17 of 18 opponents to under 35% shooting from the field. Prior to coaching the girls at Commack, Haller was the Boys Basketball Coach at Valley Stream North in Nassau County for 11 years. Haller, who played football and basketball at Valley Stream also coached JV Baseball and Varsity Football. Coach Haller is an attorney and a tenured professor at Dowling College. He has been the Chair of the Department of Management and Leadership for the past 23 years. His teaching responsibilities include Employment Law, Labor Law and Business Law. He is also the NCAA Faculty Representative. Haller lives in Commack with his wife Celeste, a 3 sport college athlete, who teaches Life Science at Westbury Middle School. They have 3 daughters. Kristen (22) who played basketball and lacrosse at Clark University, is a graduate student at Adelphi University studying Forensic Psychology. Casey (18) a US Marine, is currently deployed in the Middle East. Kerry (17) will enter the US Naval Academy in June 2013 and will play field hockey.

This July, Future Stars Summer Camps is partnering with Move for Hunger, Southampton Youth Services, and Hampton One Real Estate Group to hold the month-long Operation End Hunger food drive In Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester counties. In the spirit of friendly competition, the total weight of food collected at each Future Stars facility will be tracked on FSCamps.com, SysInc.org, HamptoneOne.com, and MoveForHunger.org. Each facility welcomes athletes and neighbors alike to “take 2 Minutes to bring in 2 Cans” for deposit in boxes labeled “Move For Hunger” on location. Hunger is an invisible plague in Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester counties. In Westchester, 34,500 children go to bed hungry every night. In Nassau, that number is 42,630,

and in Suffolk, hunger undermines the physical and emotional health of 54,000 children daily. In total, these counties are home to over 131,000 hungry children, and many more hungry adults. Food insecurity is a tragedy for everyone it touches, and it also corrodes the stability and value of communal life for those who think it does not affect them. Six individual Future Stars Summer Camps and the SYS Facility in Southampton are supporting their communities by collecting cans of food on location for Operation End Hunger. At the conclusion of the food drive, Hall-Lane Moving & Storage and Gold Service Movers will transport all collected food from these six locations to local food banks. In celebration of their charitable contributions, the six participating

The Fisher House Foundation administers the Scholarships for Military Children Program through Scholarship Managers, a professional scholarship management services organization. Fisher House is known for building the military comfort homes near military medical facilities. As in prior year programs, the level of competition continues to be very keen. “The cumulative GPA remains in the 3.7 to 3.9 range,” said Bernard T. The annual Scholarships for Military Children Program winners have been announced, and the “Honor Roll” is impressive. Approximately 5,000 students applied for the scholarships at commissary locations worldwide. All of the recipients are listed at www.military scholar.org, the official website for the program. Lauren Klose of Seaford is a recipient of a $1,500 college scholarship awarded at Mitchell Field. Mitchell Field is one of over 250 commissaries operated worldwide by the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA). Lauren’s parents are Ronald and Karen Klose. Lauren

is enrolled, or plans to enroll, at the College of Saint Rose. Lauren’s school and community activities include: school newspaper, SADD, Student Events board, Friday Knights Autism program and Reach Out Saint Rose. The Scholarships for Military Children Program was initiated in 2000 to award scholarships to graduating high school seniors or collegeenrolled students. The scholarship program is open to qualified sons and daughters of members of the U.S. Armed Services including active duty, retirees, guard/reserves, as well as children of deceased military personnel. Applications are turned in through commissaries.
