Celebrating July 4th July 4th is a day when Americans celebrate their independence, but it’s also a day to commemorate two men who played vital roles in procuring that independence. Both John Adams, the second President of the United States, and his successor Thomas Jefferson passed away on July 4, 1826. The two men had an interesting relationship that became increasingly

complex as the nation they helped to found developed. According to History.com, Adams and Jefferson were confidantes in the 1780s. But as time wore on, each man developed a different view of what the United States government should be, creating a rift in their relationship that was only widened by the 1800 presidential election. The men ran against each other in that election, which is

still considered one of the more contentious elections in American history. Jefferson ultimately claimed victory, a result so unnerving to Adams that he left Washington, D.C. prior to Jefferson’s inauguration. The two men would ultimately reconcile, exchanging more than 150 letters before dying within hours of one another on Independence Day in 1826.

Few summertime holidays elicit as much excitement as the Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day in the United States. Each year, family, friends and revelers anticipate the arrival of the holiday so they can host barbecues, enjoy the sun, listen to their favorite summertime tunes, and commemorate the freedoms afforded by the monumental events that led to the holiday’s establishment. Independence Day became a federal holiday in 1941, but July 4th has stood as the birth of American independence for much longer. July 4th marks a pivotal moment in the American Revolution. According to PBS, the colonies were forced to pay taxes to England’s King George III despite having no representation in the British Parliament. “Taxation without representation” became a battle cry and was one of several grievances colonists had with Great Britain. Conflict between the colonies had been going on for at least a

year before the colonies convened a Continental Congress in Philadelphia in June of 1776, says Military.com. On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence from England. Two days later, on July 4, 1776, delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence is an historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson was considered the strongest and most eloquent writer of the declaration writing committee charged with putting the colonies’ sentiments into words. Richard Henry Lee of Virginia was one of the first people to present a resolution for American independence, and his commentary was the impetus for the formal Declaration of Independence. A total of 86 changes were made to Jefferson’s original draft until the final version was adopted. The signing of the document helped to solidify independence, and eventually lead to the

formation of the United States of America. A total of 56 delegates signed the document. Although John Hancock’s signature is the largest, it did not hold more weight than the other signatures. Rather, rumor has it, Hancock signed it so large so that the “fat, old King could read it without his spectacles.” However, the National Archives says it was also customary that, since Hancock was the president of the Continental Congress, he be the first person to sign the document centered below the text. The Pennsylvania Evening Post was the first newspaper to print the Declaration of Independence on July 6, 1776. The first public readings of the Declaration were held in Philadelphia’s Independence Square on July 8, 1776. We hope everyone enjoys the Fourth of July. Let us embrace our country’s history, enjoy our freedoms and unite over the love of our country.

on a superhero outline. They then shared these qualities with the group and spoke about how these qualities are positive and negative, before talking about role models in their own lives. During the final session, the girls learned about Katie Hance and her ability to see the good in others. The girls discussed different social scenarios and how they can work toward resolving conflict in those situations. As a closing activity, the girls wrote genuine compliments to others in the group. At the end of the third session, each girl received a gift from the Hance Family Foundation – a necklace with three hearts in honor of Emma, Alyson and Katie, as well as and their picture. “The girls learn about what it means to be beautiful, how to see the beauty in each and every person, and to value the beautiful qualities in themselves,” Ms. Klein said. “They learn practical leadership skills such as conflict resolution and how to be assertive and confident in who they are. They also learn about recognizing the beauty in others and the value of supporting one another. It is my hope that this is one of those programs that leave an impact and the students remember for years to come.”

“I Am Beautiful” was an oft-repeated saying as third grade girls at Seaford Harbor Elementary School participated in Beautiful Me, a program that focuses on self-confidence, self-esteem and conflict resolution. Beautiful Me was created by Warren and Jackie Hance after the loss of their three young daughters, Emma, Alyson and Katie, in a tragic car accident. The Hance Family Foundation was established to honor the girls and turn an unimaginable tragedy into a positive force to empower young women. Harbor has been running Beautiful Me since 2017, with three one-hour-long sessions led by social worker Sharon Klein. During the first workshop, the girls heard about Alyson Hance and the lesson her mother taught her about being confident in her own skin. Participants began the session by stating their name and saying, “I am beautiful.” The girls discussed rules that they have for themselves in order to promote self-care. In the second session, the girls worked on selfawareness and learned about Emma Hance and her audition in a local play. Ms. Klein discussed with students how their body language can impact their relationships. During this session, the girls wrote qualities about themselves

The courtyard at Seaford Middle School got a fresh look this spring and the renovation was a collaborative effort among several groups of students. Eighth graders from the National Junior Honor Society along with students from the Service Club and the nature study course combined forces to improve the outdoor space. While it is an annual tradition for members of the honor society to take care of the courtyard as a community service project, this year featured some significant upgrades. Throughout April and May, honor society

students worked afterschool to redesign and rebuild the center garden. They removed old wood, raked, weeded and put down new mulch. Additionally, they encircled all of the trees with mulch, repainted the picnic tables, planted marigolds and prepared a sunflower field and pumpkin patch, both of which will come to life in the fall. ‘They really did an amazing job,” said Sarah Frank, co-adviser of the honor society with Danielle Alveari. Members of the Service Club, under the direction of advisers Amanda Smith

and Julis Spellman, painted stepping stones. The flat, round stones were placed around the courtyard, including five that identify the types of sunflowers that were planted. They also decorated dozens of rocks with colorful designs and inspirational messages. Students in Frank Maniscalco’s nature study class also contributed to the courtyard project. They removed an old pond in the corner, filled it in an and replaced it with rocks. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. It is an 11 acre farm, located at 178 Oxhead Road in Centereach, and is ran entirely by volunteers. This community farm grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to over 11 food pantries / soup kitchens. They also offer CSA Memberships, educational programs, they host community events and they have a seasonal farm stand! Anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at this farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM, which started on June 12th and runs through October 10th. You will find organically grown produce and every purchase made will support the farm and their mission. The farm is proud to continue operating, however it is in need of some repairs, such as plumbing assistance, fountain repair and roofing work. If you or someone you know would be willing to donate their time and skills to assist in any of these projects, it would be such a blessing to their farm. Depending on the season, Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has a variety of farm work that volunteers can assist with, such as planting, weeding, harvesting, working in the greenhouse and property maintenance. There will be games for kids, bounce houses, face painting, pumpkins, local organic produce, country line dancing, vendors, food trucks and an overall fun time for your entire family! Funds Available To Help Residents With Rent Payments, Utility Arrears & Security Deposits To assist Town of Oyster Bay renters facing economic hardships, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently announced the availability of $16 million in Federal funds for those facing housing insecurity as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although this rental assistance program is being administered by the Long

Island Housing Partnership (LIHP), qualifying residents can now register at www. oysterbaytown.com/ rentalassistance. After registration, the LIHP will contact applicants to obtain documentation and information necessary to secure these funds. Supervisor Saladino stated, “These Federal funds were granted to the Town of Oyster Bay to help residents

recover from economic hardships created by the pandemic and government shutdowns. This rental assistance program provides critical funding to prevent homelessness and ensure those experiencing financial hardship are able to recover and rebuild their lives while having a stable place to call home.” The program is designed to assist residents with

current and prospective rent, arrears for utilities and home energy costs, and other expenses related to housing such as rental security deposits. Assistance under this program could be provided for up to 12 months of payments, with an additional 3 months if necessary to ensure housing stability, and will cover arrears and costs accrued on or after March 13, 2020.

Assistance is available on a first-come, first-served basis until Federal funds have been exhausted. Eligible residents must be able to answer yes to the following questions: Do you live in the Town of Oyster Bay as your primary residence? Is your household income (from all sources) at or below 80% of the U.S. Department of Urban

Development (“HUD”) Area Median Income (“AMI”)? Are you at risk of homelessness or housing instability? (i.e. past due utility or rent notices)? Has one member of the household (a) qualified for unemployment, (b) had a reduction of income, (c) incurred significant costs, or (d) experienced a financial hardship?

A major Public Art Exhibit piece has been restored & spruced up after a decade and a half as a tourist attraction on Freeport’s Nautical MiIe on Long Island. Weathering seventeen years on Woodcleft Canal and surviving Super Storm Sandy in 2012, “Sport of Kings” is back and better than ever. Freeport resident James Caracciolo owns the life sized sculpture of a Quarter Horse who was among the twenty or so artworks by

several artists participating in the Fundraising Auction sponsored by Nassau County and the Sport Entertainment and Tourism Commission at Belmont Racetrack in 2003. The years and hurricanes took their toll on the artwork and James felt he might be able to convince the original artist to consider doing the restoration herself. When asked if she was up to the task in 2020 , Debra Ann Kasimakis, Long Island’s own celebrity artist said,

“I’d be honored” and after her stroke of 2019, felt it would be a great way to keep in the loop during the year of the Pandemic. There is talk on the Grapevine of a coming out party for the horse and this Summer is the perfect time to make the unveiling a step in a positive direction for Long Island tourism. “Sport of Kings” is back and so is Long Island’s Summer Season. PSEG Long Island is prepared for hurricane season and to meet peak demand during extreme heat situations this summer. The company’s ongoing system improvements and enhancements to the grid help provide electric reliability to Long Island and the Rockaways throughout the year. Since last August, PSEG Long Island has incorporated numerous enhancements and upgrades to the electric grid, its systems and its storm processes, including its contingency procedures. PSEG Long Island’s systems have undergone upgrades, performance tuning and numerous tests. “We are prepared and ready to respond,” said Daniel Eichhorn, president and chief operating officer, PSEG Long Island. “PSEG Long Island is committed to continually improving system reliability and enhancing the experience our customers have when they connect with us, and we have been working nonstop to fulfill that commitment. PSEG Long Island continues to make strategic investments to serve our customers today and in the future.” IT Systems Enhancements and Testing Success PSEG Long Island has continued to make enhancements to its IT systems and has conducted robust testing of the outage management and telephony systems. Last week, PSEG Long Island completed a successful end-to-end test of the version 5.5 outage management and telephony systems in an extreme weather scenario. This endto-end test is in addition to other successful tests, which included one simulating up to 90% of the customer base reporting outages over a 24hour period. Business Continuity and Emergency Procedures PSEG Long Island updated its business continuity and emergency procedures to reflect changes and

updates to address PSEG Long Island’s response in the event of a failure of critical systems. Since last August, PSEG Long Island has conducted three drills of these procedures with its dedicated workforce. Electric Infrastructure Improvements Across Long Island and the Rockaways, PSEG Long Island has prepared the electric infrastructure by focusing on substation, and transmission and distribution improvements, as well as circuit and equipment inspections using drones, helicopters and infrared technology. PSEG Long Island’s recent infrastructure improvements include: New transformers installed in Elmont, Uniondale, Culloden Point, Roslyn, Far Rockaway and Flowerfield substations to provide additional capacity during peak demand 4 new distribution feeder lines installed in Elmont, Uniondale, Roslyn and Flowerfield areas to accommodate load growth 6 distribution circuits upgraded in Kings Point, North Hills, Massapequa, Mitchel Gardens, Lake Success and Rockaway Beach to improve circuit reliability 37 transmission system circuit breakers added or replaced for enhanced system reliability A new transmission circuit installed between the Riverhead and Canal substation A transmission circuit upgraded between the Wildwood and Riverhead substations Storm Hardening Programs Completed Since the implementation of the FEMA-funded stormhardening program funded in 2014, PSEG Long Island has completed storm hardening and reliability work on more than 450 miles of distribution mainline circuits. Stormhardened circuits have seen a significant reduction in

storm damage and 42% fewer outages. PSEG Long Island is proud to continue its storm hardening work with Power On, an initiative started in the spring of 2020 that will continue to improve reliability by strengthening distribution lines, targeting the most vulnerable circuits across Long Island and the Rockaways. Since the launch, an additional 59 miles of distribution mainline circuits have been storm hardened with stronger poles, thicker wire and other modern equipment. Work on the first circuits began in April 2020 and will continue over the next five years. To further protect against storm damage to the energy grid, arborists from PSEG Long Island’s Tree Trimming program work throughout the year to identify and trim tree limbs in rights of way and along easements that could potentially cause outages during or after a storm. In 2020, PSEG Long Island removed more than 8,000 hazardous trees and/or large limbs along the distribution and transmission system and trimmed 2,400 miles of distribution and transmission line clearance in accordance with the industry best practice clearance standard. This standard preserves the health of the tree and directs future growth away from power lines. In addition, a new vine mitigation program identified, cut and treated more than 4,000 vine locations across Long Island and the Rockaways. PSEG Long Island also prepares its dedicated workforce for summer by conducting annual hurricane and tropical storm drills and employee training; by developing emergency summer operating plans; and by performing summerpeak reliability analyses to ensure there is sufficient capacity to meet electric demand on high-heat days.

The History Of America’s Independence Day

Conflict between the colonies had been going on for at least a year before the colonies convened a Continental Congress in Philadelphia in June of 1776, says Military.com. On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence from England. Two days later, on July 4, 1776, delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence is an historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson was considered the strongest and most eloquent writer of the declaration writing committee charged with putting the colonies’ sentiments into words. Richard Henry Lee of Virginia was one of the first people to present a resolution for American independence, and his commentary was the impetus for the formal Declaration of Independence. A total of 86 changes were made to

Jefferson’s original draft until the final version was adopted. The signing of the document helped to solidify independence, and eventually lead to the formation of the United States of America. A total of 56 delegates signed the document. Although John Hancock’s signature is the largest, it did not hold more weight than the other signatures. Rather, rumor has it, Hancock signed it so large so that the “fat, old King could read it without his spectacles.” However, the National Archives says it was also customary that, since Hancock was the president of the Continental Congress, he be the first person to sign the document centered below the text. The Pennsylvania Evening Post was the first newspaper to print the Declaration of Independence on July 6, 1776. The first public readings of the Declaration were held in Philadelphia’s Independence Square on July 8, 1776.

General Taxes Due Prior to August 10th to Avoid Paying Penalties Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato reminds residents that the Second Half of the 2021 General Tax Levy is due and payable July 1st, but can be paid without penalty through August 10th. “New York State laws allows my office to provide taxpayers with a 40-day penalty free period from the date the tax is due during which

payment may be made without penalty,” said Receiver Pravato. “After the 40 days, State Law requires a one percent penalty be added for each month the tax remains unpaid, retroactive to July 1st. So make your payment before August 10th and don’t delay, and you will ensure you aren’t paying more out of pocket than you need to!” Please be certain to

sign your check, payable to Jeffrey P. Pravato, Receiver of Taxes. Indicate your property’s S.D. Code, Section, Block, Lot, and Phone number on the check.
