Another milestone was celebrated at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) when its inaugural chapter of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA) inducted 19 new members this year. These students, attending LIHSA from throughout Long Island, were recognized not only for their skill on the dance floor but also for their academic achievements and leadership. “These are highachieving students with evolving artistry and a genuine interest in so many areas of the arts,” said Lead Dance Instructor Dina Denis-Paolucci, who spearheaded efforts to launch the LIHSA chapter of the NHSDA. “I’m really proud of all of you,” she told her students at the induction ceremony. “This is a huge accomplishment for our program.” The LIHSA NHSDA members were directly involved in the development of their new chapter and helped plan the ceremony. Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important
for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

ZOO TRIP - The E.N.L. (English New Language) students of the Seaford Harbor Elementary School recently went on a field trip to the Queens Zoo. The children had a great day as they practiced their newly acquired English vocabulary and they identified different birds and animals.
Harbor Day The skies may have been gray outside, but inside the Seaford Harbor Elementary School it was a kaleidoscope of color as students celebrated Harbor Day with activities that centered on school pride and friendly competition. Students, dressed in T-shirts in the colors of the rainbow, were full of energy and excitement as
the festivities kicked off with a banner parade. Half the grades created a sea of color on the floor as they sat to watch other grades parade around them with their class banners. After the parade, the Harbor administrators paid tribute to Superintendent Brian Conboy, a veteran Harbor teacher who will retire on June 30th, by
presenting him with a photo of the school and having the students crowd around him for a photo. Students later enjoyed a series of games organized by the Class Mothers, lunch with a DJ and entertainment, various classroom activities and a movie.

Joining the ranks of seven educators before him, Seaford Harbor Elementary School physical education teacher Michael Spreckels became the eighth recipient of the coveted Viking Helmet, a symbol of teaching excellence in the district. He was given the helmet by last year’s recipient, Seaford Middle School teacher Eric Lichtwar, in front of the entire Harbor School faculty, administrators and former students who offered congratulations and words of praise. “Mr. Spreckels always made sure that we had fun in class and there was never any judgment; we were all great in his eyes,” said former student Sklar Munro. “He always has a smile when you see him in the hall or just about anywhere. He always goes out of his way to get to know everyone,” added Alexandra Leggio, another former student. Prior to handing off the honor, Lichtwar told a story that illustrated Spreckels’ effectiveness as
a teacher and as a deserving recipient of the helmet. “There was a moment earlier this spring where I was watching a JV baseball game with a fellow teacher,” Lichtwar began. “One of the Seaford boys made a poor decision... acted impulsively in an unsportsmanlike manner. Instead of emasculating the child, the teacher I was with had a quiet conversation, out of ear shot of the team, but close enough for me to eavesdrop. I didn’t hear every word said, but know this, the child walked away in anger - disgust really,” Lichtwar said. “Instead of pursuing this child and continuing to hammer home a point, this teacher let the moment unfold...he gave the child time to process what was said. Several innings later… the child walked up to the teacher and said, ‘I thought about what you said, you’re right, I should’ve acted differently, I’m better than that; sorry.’ To that our teacher said, ‘All good buddy, let’s make this a good inning’.” Lichtwar defined that
incident as “a powerful, yet subtle moment in time... the kind that can echo a lifetime for a child,” adding that Spreckels “shares in our district’s children’s greatest moments and their lowest...he’s there to comfort them when they are broken physically or emotionally.” Lichtwar then presented the helmet to Spreckels who proudly accepted amid thunderous applause from his colleagues and students. The Viking Helmet tradition began when Brian L. Conboy became Superintendent of Seaford Schools seven years ago. He presented it to Seaford High School Math Chairperson Kevin O’Reilly at his first Superintendent’s Conference. It was then that Conboy laid down the ground rules: recipients may keep the helmet for as long as they want and pass it on to whomever they believe deserves the recognition. In addition to Lichtwar and O’Reilly, past recipients include Kerry Hansen, Thomas Fioriglio, Sue Ward, Louise Valentino and Sue Henle.
