The trophies, plaques and certificates that Seaford High School science research student Madison Elias has earned this year would suggest she’s a veteran of the program. But that’s not the case for the freshman, who accomplished so much in just her first year. When Mary Simons, who co-teaches the science research class with Janine Cupo, visited eighth grade science classes last year, Madison said it sounded interesting and signed up for the full-year elective
course. Her project this year is titled “The effects of green tea on the long-term memory of the great pond snail.” Madison has been caring for the pond snails in the science research classroom and trained them to avoid sucrose using a process called continued taste aversion. Madison earned highest honors in the biology and medicine category at the Long Island Science Congress fair in the junior varsity division. That qualified her for the state level fair, in which she
also earned highest honors in the junior division. Additionally, she received the Future Scientist of the Year award in the South Asian American Women’s Alliance fair. “Not a lot of people decide to train pond snails,” Madison said about the uniqueness of her project, which is why she believes it stood out for judges. She said the class is a big commitment as she does all of her data collection in school and much of her analysis and presentation work at home. Next year,
she hopes to take her project to the next level by continuing with the experiment with cocoa, which as some chemical similarities with green tea. Madison would look to do a completely different project in her junior and senior years, as science research students can take the class for all four years of high school. Ms. Cupo cited Madison’s phenomenal dedication, tenacity and perseverance as reasons that she has been recognized by judges at multiple science fairs.

Protecting And Recovering Your Wages (NAPSI)—For too many workers in the U.S., a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work doesn’t ring true. That’s especially the case in certain sectors of the economy including construction, food service, agriculture, janitorial, retail and hospitality. Too often, employers mistakenly or intentionally deny workers the wages to which they are legally
entitled, such as the minimum wage and overtime. That’s where the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division comes in. The agency enforces federal labor laws. If it investigates and finds that an employer failed to pay at least the minimum wage and overtime, it can recover unpaid wages on behalf of workers.
The Wage and Hour Division wants to make sure those wages are quickly handed over to the workers who earned them, yet finding workers can sometimes be a challenge. But there’s now a new online tool called Workers Owed Wages. It’s available in English and Spanish and allows workers or their advocates to find out—

income. Tina juggled work, school and raising two boys along with many other life responsibilities during her years with New Ground. She attended an Associate Degree program part time and finished in three years. She then immediately started a Bachelor Degree program, which she completed in three years. Following each accomplishment, she secured better paying employment and used her extra earnings to reach her financial goals. Upon completing the New Ground program and moving into a market rent apartment, she continued her education plan. This May she graduated with her Master Degree in Social Work and this summer she will become a homeowner! Tina stated, “I feel awesome, I feel accomplished. It has been a long journey. I’m just happy and overwhelmed. I love working with people and there is a big need for people to care for other people now. It’s what New Ground did for me, helping me to get where I am. Now it’s my turn to help someone else.” As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties by dealing with it’s underlying causes, rather than merely treating symptoms. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! This organization provides a portfolio of programming delivered by professionals, so that a set of services is customized in a unique way for each Veteran and family they serve. This way they can solve all of the underlying causes of their situation at the same time. They truly believe that this is how you break the cycle of homelessness! Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing. This week I would like to share yet another success story. Please note: The name of the individual mentioned in this story has been changed for confidentiality purposes. A Long Island resident, Tina, found New Ground when she was facing eviction from her apartment and had nowhere to go with her two young sons. She had fallen behind on rent because of a significant decrease in her paycheck and she did not have the means to pay off this debt or to afford a new apartment. She moved into the Long Term Housing Program with New Ground, where she paid an affordable rent based on her income and began to receive all the intensive social work and education services necessary to help her turn things around. While in the program, Tina paid off significant debts on her credit report, increased her score by over 200 points, created a savings and secured better paying stable employment. However, her real focus was education. She agreed with New Ground that the way out of her cycle of poverty was a higher degree to ensure greater

Athletes Are College Bound With four student athletes signing their National Letters of Intent on June 12 to play college sports, that brings the total number of commitments from the Seaford High School Class of 2019 up to 20. Principal Scott Bersin noted that more than 10 percent of this year’s graduating class will
suit up for a college team, which he said is an impressive amount. Newly signed athletes include Allyson Drucker (Adelphi University, dance), Gianna Pisano (Nassau Community College, cheerleading), Britney Sirota (Manhattanville College, lacrosse) and Julianna Tyznar (Sacred Heart University,
cheerleading). They were joined by administrators, guidance counselors, coaches and family members at the afterschool signing ceremony. Athletic Director Michael Spreckels wished them as they continue their athletic pursuits at the next level.
