With so many exciting month-long events, temperate weather for people who live in areas of the world where summer is about to begin and special occasions like Father’s Day and school graduations, June is a popular month. Manor Teachers On The Move Spread Joy

As Seaford Manor Elementary School teachers and staff gathered in the parking lot of the Tackapausha Museum and Preserve the morning of June 6, there was an excitement in the air. That same enthusiasm could also be found on the streets of Seaford, where children and their families were outside awaiting a special moment. After decorating their cars with signs, streamers and balloons, teachers then embarked on an hour-long journey up and down more than 30 streets. The car

parade brought joy to both staff and students, who hadn’t seen each other in person since schools closed in mid-March because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Principal Debra Emmerich, in the first car behind the Seaford fire truck that led the parade, brought along a special guest. Seated beside her was the Seaford Viking, her son John taking on the role of the district mascot. She said that the staff was very emotional as they prepared for the event, knowing it was a special day for the entire Manor community.

“We wanted nothing more than to see our students again and we were finally getting our chance,” she said. “When we saw the kids’ excited faces, and their families waving, cheering and smiling some of us got choked up. It was priceless. The staff needed this, our students needed this, we all needed this. Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, non-profits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is wellrounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met. In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. Her goal is to provide each and every one of her clients with a warm, happy, positive and empathetic experience before, during and after each visit. She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. Unlike your average hair salon, Scanlon’s uses fresh new sanitized tools and capes on all her clients. She now also offers one on one personal service with gloves and masks, and will wash and sanitize any area which was touched during the visit. Additionally, if you would like to have your hair service done outside, Scanlon’s will gladly honor that request. “Everyone’s safety and comfort is our primary concern”, says owner Eileen Scanlon. Scanlon’s business model was always unique and special, however with everyone adjusting to the new normal, her services are becoming more and more desired. Seaford Fifth Graders Still Find Ways To Celebrate After spending the last six years learning and growing together, the end of fifth grade didn’t turn out quite as expected for students at Seaford Harbor and Seaford Manor elementary schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but that hasn’t diminished the memories they made. At Seaford Harbor, fifth graders contributed to a video put together by the PTA in which they shared what they would miss most about their school. Teachers have also been in regular contact with their students by phone or video conference. “I feel like some of the kids enjoy the time just to talk, since that is what they are missing the most – the social aspect,” Harbor fifth grade teacher Richard

Thau said. Fifth graders were able to see their teachers, past and present, during a car parade through the neighborhood on May 29. Seaford Manor Elementary School’s moving-up ceremony will take on the theme of a drive-in moving theater. In preparation for the event, which will feature a car sing-along, fifth grade classes met on Fridays in Zoom video conferences to practice the class song, “Have it All” by Jason Mraz. The song was chosen because of its uplifting message. The Manor Memory Poster Project encouraged students to reflect on their elementary school memories. The school provided them with the

blank posters, which the fifth graders could then decorate and share in a Flipgrid video. Other celebratory activities include an online bagel breakfast, hosted by school administrators and fifth grade teachers, and a “clap out video” with teachers and aides from every grade level sharing farewell messages followed by a few seconds of clapping. “We want to always remind students how loved they are by their past and current teachers,” said teacher Katharine Black. Students from both Harbor and Manor – the future Seaford High School Class of 2027 – also received personalized signs to place on their front lawns.

One Loose Balloon Can Really Rain On Your Car Parade

June and July are filled with occasions to celebrate, including graduations, birthdays and weddings. While these celebrations have evolved into car parades and other events to maintain safe social distancing, one thing remains the same: Metallic party balloons can start fires and cause power outages if they drift into overhead electrical wires and equipment. “The safety of our customers and employees is PSEG Long Island’s top priority,” said John O’Connell, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “Mylar balloons add extra festivity to our celebrations, but when released, they do present a threat to our electrical system and the safety of those nearby. We all need reasons to celebrate these days, so let’s spread the

word and make sure we don’t let a stray balloon get in the way of that.” The distinctive metallic coating on Mylar balloons conducts electricity. Because of this, when a Mylar balloon is exposed to a power line, it can cause a short circuit. This short circuit can lead to power outages, fires and possible injuries. Safety is always PSEG Long Island’s top priority. To reduce the risk of outages and injuries, customers should keep the following safety tips in mind: • Mylar balloons and other decorations should be kept away from overhead power lines and equipment. • Make sure balloons are secured to a weight that is heavy enough to prevent them from floating away. Keep balloons tethered and attached to the weights at all times. • Always properly dispose

of Mylar balloons by safely puncturing the balloon in several places to release the helium that otherwise could cause the balloon to float away. • NEVER touch a power line. Do not attempt to retrieve a balloon, toy or other type of debris that is entangled in an overhead power line.
