Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. It is an 11 acre farm, located at 178 Oxhead Road in Centereach, and is ran entirely by volunteers. This community farm grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to over 11 food pantries / soup kitchens. They also offer CSA Memberships, educational programs, they host community events and they have a seasonal farm stand! If you live nearby the farm and would like to sign up for their Summer and or Fall CSA program, you can. Their crop shares are an easy way to guarantee farm fresh veggies for you and your family all season long. By joining their CSA program you will gain a connection to their farm and know exactly where your vegetables are coming from. You will receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown right in Centereach, while supporting your own neighbors. Their organically grown vegetables are harvested and packed the same day you receive them, cutting time and travel dramatically from field to fork. Members of their Summer CSA can expect to receive a wide variety of summer vegetables, including but not limited to, summer squashes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers and a diverse array of greens. Members of their Fall CSA can expect to receive an assortment of winter squashes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, carrots, beets, as well as an assortment of greens. Additionally, anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at their farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM, which started on June 12th and runs through October 10th. You will find organically grown produce and every purchase made will support the farm and their mission. Looking to show your support in another way? Volunteers are needed! Depending on the season, Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has a variety of farm work that volunteers
can assist with, such as planting, weeding, harvesting, working in the greenhouse and property maintenance. Individuals and groups are able to volunteer at the farm and community service hours can be given. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit their website and fill out their Volunteer Waiver Form and the contact the farm directly at 631.774.1556 to find out when you can start! Due to the pandemic, volunteers must bring a pair of gloves. It it suggested that volunteers bring sunscreen and any food or drink they may need. Lastly, the farm is in need of some repairs; they need a new roof on their barn, plumbing assistance and fountain repair. If you or someone you know would be willing to donate their time and skills to assist in any of these projects, it would be such a blessing to their farm. Seaford’s HOBY participants said they learned that leadership isn’t about telling other people what to do, but rather bringing people together and using everyone’s talents and strengths to accomplish a goal. Billy explained twhat he gained a better understanding of how to listen to other people’s voices and ideas in a group setting and ensure that everyone feels included in the process. “Understanding that everyone’s perspectives are important and special will help me not just in leadership positions but with all aspects of life,” Billy said. Taylor DiFondi and Taylor Purcell both said they learned a lot about
themselves and their own leadership qualities. “This experience helped me realize my personal traits,” Taylor Purcell said, “and now that I have identified my strengths, I can use this to identify problems in my community and help solve them in the future.” Taylor DiFondi said she discovered that she is a good problem solver. She also noted that good leaders are those who are able to bring out leadership abilities in others. Will, who described his leadership style as “factbased and analytical” said he learned that leadership involves in a learning curve. No one steps into that role knowing everything, he said, and the best leaders are those who are willing to learn, grow and accept that they might fail along the way. “It’s OK to take time to

Students attend HOBY as 10th graders, because it is as juniors and seniors that they typically take on leadership roles in the school, whether in their classes, in clubs or on sports teams. The four students are already involved in numerous activities as they head into their final two years at Seaford High School. One charge for the HOBY participants will be taking the knowledge they learned during the conference and bringing it to others within the school. Taylor DiFondi said the community service message at the conference really stood out for her, and she learned ways to help her school and community that she never thought of. “Everyone should hear the messages,” she said, “and we can spread them.”

The Journal of Emerging Investigators, an online magazine dedicated to publishing research by middle school and high school students, has featured the work of several of Seaford High School’s brilliant young minds this year. Senior Melissa Lochner is the latest to have her article featured on the website following her study of plastic pollution. Melissa’s topic, “Awareness of plastic pollution and adoption of green consumer lifestyles among students from high school,” was based on a survey of her peers. Thirty Seaford High School students, from grades 9-12, volunteered to take part in her research and were divided into two groups. For one group, she provided them with extensive information
about plastic pollution and surveyed them to see if it changed their behaviors regarding waste disposal and recycling. The control group received no information, but where still surveyed to see if their behaviors changed. She used the New Ecological Paradigm Scale, which measures a person’s environmental concern. Not surprisingly, Melissa said, there were noticeable changes among the group that read articles and viewed videos about plastic pollution, but not with the control group. Melissa completed her research project during her junior year as a student in the Advanced Placement Research class. In addition to support from teacher Tania Cintorino and librarian Joanna McCloskey, she worked
with Dr. David Hardisty from the University of British Columbia School of Business. Her paper was submitted to the Journal of Emerging Investigators in September and published on June 3, co-authored by Dr. Hardisty. “I’m so happy and it made it all worth it,” Melissa said. “So much work goes into this. I have a real, tangible thing to be proud of. I’ve always been very environmentally conscious and it’s always been a topic close to my heart.” In the fall, Melissa will attend Binghamton University where she will major in biochemistry. She will also enroll in a freshman research program in which she will study biomedical chemistry.

Identity Theft Prevention Tips (NAPSI)-A recent online survey by Toluna/Greenfield Online, Inc. found that while most consumers try to protect their identity, many admitted to risky behavior that could put them at risk for ID theft. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and check
your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great cross-reference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make
sure your security patch and anti-virus software are updated regularly. Consider technology to protect against potential viruses. • Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks:
Give cash or gift cards. The information on a check— name, signature, address— can be used to steal identity. •Strengthen passwords: Use passwords with at least eight characters, including a combination of letters, numbers and symbols that are easy for you to remember but difficult for predators to guess. • Watch your wallet: Be careful at parties, restaurants, fitness clubs,
shopping carts and your car. • Don’t take the bait on phishing scams: Also, beware of shoulder surfing (when a thief looks over your shoulder while you’re at an ATM, either directly or via a camera). • Stop mail and newspaper delivery when you’ll be away from home. • Consider an identity theft protection service: One low-cost solution monitors the online
criminal underground where identities are bought and sold and instantly alerts you if your Social Security number or up to 10 credit card or debit card numbers are posted by thieves. The service also scans online directories and search engines, prime sources for spammers and thieves, letting you know where your information is available, and provides advice on how to remove it.

Fun Facts About Lefties Left-handed, lefty, southpaw - these are all terms used to describe people who favor their left hands for writing, throwing a ball and myriad other activities. It is estimated that between 10 and 12 percent of all people are left-handed. Although that makes southpaws an undeniable minority, the number of lefthanded people is creeping up. Sports Proclivity Being left-handed may confer an advantage for athletes. Wayne Gretzky, Sandy Koufax and Martina Navratilova are just a few
of the many accomplished lefthanded sports legends. Sports scientist Florian Loffing with the Institute of Sport Science, University of Oldenburg in Germany found that in sports where there is a short time constraint, lefties appeared to excel. That could be why he found 26 percent of the top male players in table tennis are lefties. And sports like baseball and cricket are dominated by left-handed players. Health Risks And Benefits According to a 2010 study
published in the journal Pediatrics, researchers found those who were left-handed had an increased risk for dyslexia, ADHD and certain mood disorders. It could be tied to the hemispheres of the brain and how 30 percent of left-handed people are partial to the right hemisphere or have no dominant hemisphere for language functioning. Conversely, lefties can bounce back from stroke or other brainrelated injuries more readily than righties, according to data published in 2015 in Scientific
Reports. A study published in Laterality found that left-handed people are less likely to suffer arthritis and ulcers. More Creative Lefties are more likely to be artistic or innovative. Research published in the American Journal of Psychology found there is some evidence that left-handed people are better at divergent thinking, a method of idea generation that explores many possible solutions. The Left-Handers Club, a pro-lefty advocacy group, also found that
left-handed individuals tend to be drawn to careers in the arts, music, sports, and informationtechnology fields. Ambidextrous Inclinations The world is geared towards being right-handed, with buttons on jackets, doorknobs, desks in school, and more designed with right-handed people in mind. Therefore, many lefties become ambidextrous simply because they have to, according to data published in Reader’s Digest.
