Leaders of Tomorrow This June, members of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC) will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Gold Award, a prestigious honor and the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. The Gold Award represents developing leaders by inspiring girls to execute a project they feel passionate about in their local community to make the world a better place. The GSNC will award 101 local young women with the honor, an accomplishment which reflects leadership and citizenship skills that set them apart. “Earning the Girl Scout Gold Award is an extremely notable achievement, and we are so delighted to announce this year we have over a hundred local young women who will receive this honor,” said Donna Ceravolo,

Planned Spontaneity By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There are those who need to have every detail of each day planned down to the last minute, with little room for even the slightest compromise or delay. And then there are those individuals who prefer to fly by the seat of their pants; no blueprint, no nothing, open to whatever adventures might beckon. Me, I would definitely put myself in the former category. Routine is my friend; schedules my muse. There is something about the sense of accomplishment one gets from checking items off a “To Do” list that lends itself to peace of mind. Of course, life itself is not simply one giant “To Do” list. It requires a measure of flexibility and the ability to roll with those punches that may come flying your way. This is where that spontaneity comes into play. Case in point: I recently set out one Saturday afternoon to embark on a belated birthday

celebration for a close friend from high school. The plan – to head to the beach for our first, postMemorial Day outing, followed by dinner and maybe some prime sunset viewing and photography opportunities. “Happy Wanderers” we are, indeed. Of course, no sooner did I pack my beach bag, when the clouds rolled in, the winds kicked up and the sun disappeared behind a deep haze. Perfect sun bathing weather indeed. Alternate plans, anyone? Determined not to let the entire day go to waste, we feverishly started brainstorming, checking weather forecasts, tracking the storm radar and hoping for the best. Instead of heading out to the sand, we parked at Field #5 at Robert Moses and decided to take a little stroll over to Kismet, Fire Island for lunch, wander around a bit, and head back – hopefully before the skies decided to open up with the impending thunderstorm that had been threatening all day. Phase one went off without a

hitch, and the sun even managed to show itself for the majority of the journey. Imagine that. Phase two consisted of a quick little stopover at Gilgo Beach – after we both realized that neither of us had ever been there – before heading up to the Northport area for dinner and then to a laser light show at the Vanderbilt Planetarium. And then came the rains. Drenching, sheets of rain, pouring down on the windshield as we made our way down Ocean Parkway toward the bridge. Maybe there’ll be a rainbow, I mused, as I peered through the wipers. Then this detour will have been completely worth it, this trip to the beach on a cloudy day, interrupted by torrential rain, ending with one of nature’s most magical creations… And then, there it was, straight ahead, stretching over Cedar Beach. I looked at my friend and said, “Shall we pull over for a photo op?” Of course. Always time for a quick detour.

For Kaitlyn’s Girl Scout Gold Award Take Action Project she set out to make crossing Hempstead Turnpike safer while educating students on pedestrian safety. Kaitlyn petitioned the local town in order to increase the amount of time at pedestrian walk signals at intersections along Hempstead Turnpike. She also created pamphlets and gave presentations on pedestrian and transportation safety. Her project resulted in an increase of pedestrian walk signals along major roads

The challenges of managing his health issues while finishing second out of his 183-member senior class is an accomplishment that not only sets him apart from his peers, it speaks volumes of his character. When he faces his classmates on graduation day, he hopes to pass on advice, based on experience, on how to overcome adversity and turn a negative into a positive. “My medical situation over the last few years has been challenging and unfortunate. But I think it’s important to do my best to turn negative situations into positive ones in whatever way I can, and by sharing the insight I have gained throughout those challenges with others, I think I will be doing just that,” Nick said. Nick points to

Technology teacher and Robotics Advisor Nicholas Isgro and to AP Biology teacher Janine Cupo as sources of inspiration. “I really enjoyed Mrs. Cupo’s class and appreciated the insight she had about my health issues,” he said. “Mr. Isgro was also extremely supportive. I learned so much about Robotics from him that he influenced my decision to study mechanical engineering in college.” In addition to Robotics, Nick was President of Mathletes. He competed in several math competitions and participated in Moody’s Mega Math Challenge. As a member of Computer Club, he helped organize and run several video game fundraisers for the club. He also participated in Model Congress. The Honor Society Member and Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction is also musically gifted. He was a Tenor in the Jazz Choir, a select vocal group, since his sophomore year, and the

Barbershop select vocal group since his junior year. He is also a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. Outside of school, Nick has worked throughout his high school career as a DJ at various types of events throughout Long Island. He also learned a lot about video production and postproduction services by working for his dad’s business, Digital Video Dynamix, which provides services to concerts, sporting events, business conferences and other events. Nick provided video recording services on a weekly basis for various high school sports during his junior and senior year, and produced electronic music throughout high school. He often entered remix contests and posted his music on Soundcloud. One of his songs, titled “Luminosity,” was a finalist in the 2015 TuneRise Electronic Music Contest. Nick said his greatest

strength is his strong work ethic and his motivation to accomplish things that are important to him. His greatest weakness is not being able to say ‘no’ to people because he doesn’t like to let people down. As he nears his high school career, he said, “I met so many awesome people in this building, so many friends, it just made high school that much better. Senior year was the best year because I got to spend more time with friends, go out to lunch and enjoy myself more.” Nick leaves Seaford High School with this advice for upcoming students: “Get involved in as much as you can. Make friends, be outgoing; be social. Find something you love and work to get really good at it.” He also added that “life is incredibly uncertain, but one thing that is certain is if you work hard, you will be rewarded in the end.”

Seaford High School Salutatorian Nick Liuzzi is no stranger to earning top honors for his achievements. With a weighted grade point average of 101.86 he may have taken the coveted number two spot, but is credited for several “firsts” in the district. Modest and reserved, Nick’s passion for robotics has put Seaford in the record books as he became the first Seaford student who was named the MVP of the entire SBPLI, Inc. Long Island First Robotics Competition at Hofstra University, beating out

51 teams and more than 4,000 students. This fall, he heads to Stevens Institute of Technology to study mechanical engineering and minor in music production. “Becoming MVP was an incredible honor,” said Nick, who is President of the three-year-old team, called the “Seaford Mechanized Mafia,” one of the youngest in the competition. “Our team has come so far in a short time; it’s a great feeling.” Nick is also the first Seaford student to win a theme song contest sponsored by the SBPLI, Inc. FIRST Robotics Competition that was broadcast at the Hofstra regionals to pump up the contestants and spectators. And last year, he was named MVP for his individual team. Nick strikes a balance between strong academics, high school activities and working outside of school, although this year was even more challenging as he faced three surgeries,

The YMCA of Long Island announced today it has partnered with Stew Leonard III Children’s Charities to participate in the 7th annual World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ on Friday, June 24th, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., to promote water safety. The momentous global event is one of the many ongoing YMCA of Long Island initiatives intended to educate individuals of all ages about the importance of practicing water safety skills. “Kids have a lot of fun at this event, but there is a very serious lesson being taught,” said Anne Brigis, President and CEO of the YMCA of Long Island. “Promoting water safety is a top priority at the Y all year, and it goes beyond teaching swim techniques. Aquatic directors at all of our branches teach skills to help swimmers of all levels develop a sense of comfort and security in the water. Participating in this event will help bring much-needed awareness and skills that

Symbol of Excellence

Surrounded by colleagues and a group of former students, Seaford Middle School teacher Eric Lichtwar became the seventh recipient of the coveted Viking Helmet, the district’s symbol of teaching excellence. “Mr. Lichtwar is a very inspiring teacher not only for me, but I believe for many of the other kids who he has taught,” said Anthony Munro, who attended the helmet handoff ceremony with other former students Jacquelyn Meyer, Gisselle Anguita, Madison Uher, Shane Corsi and Hope Claisse. “Mr. Lichtwar is a perfect example of an outstanding teacher,” added Jacquelyn Meyer. “He shows the same qualities I wish to emulate one day as an educator.” Past recipient Kerry Hansen, who teaches fifth grade at Seaford Harbor Elementary School, coordinated the presentation and shared

how she found a teacher she believes most embodies what the helmet stands for – “being a master teacher and an exemplary human being.” She began by surveying her own students who were writing notes of advice to a student teacher. They said you should, “love what you’re doing,” “be positive,” “be funny” and “love the children in your class as though they are your own.” She then polled administrators, parents and colleagues, whose responses included, “Eric always made each of his students feel successful” and “If I had a child in the Seaford Schools, I would want him/her to be in Eric’s class.” Hansen said, “As I made phone calls, sent texts and e-mails and simply chatted with various members of the Seaford community, the name of one teacher was repeated again and again. Therefore, it is my privilege and pleasure to

pass the Viking Helmet along to Eric Lichtwar.” After thunderous applause, Lichtwar addressed the crowd and said he was “honored and humbled” to receive the helmet, then gathered around his former students for photos. The Viking Helmet tradition began when Brian L. Conboy became Superintendent of Seaford Schools seven years ago. He presented it to Seaford High School Math Chairperson Kevin O’Reilly at his first Superintendent’s Conference. It was then that Conboy laid down the ground rules: recipients may keep the helmet for as long as they want and pass it on to whomever they believe deserves the recognition. In addition to Hansen and O’Reilly, past recipients include Thomas Fioriglio, Sue Ward, Louise Valentino and Sue Henle.

Seaford Valedictorian

Seaford High School Valedictorian Nicholas Faranda doesn’t have a grand plan mapped out for his future. He is looking forward to exploring his career options when he attends Marist College in the fall. Modest and reserved, Nicholas is an empathic person who puts kindness and treating others with respect high on his list of attributes. Earning a weighted grade point average of 102.52, Nick found out he was first in his class when he received a letter in the mail. “My parents were more excited than I was,” he said. “I don’t like being the center of attention for my accomplishments; only when I want to share my views or opinions on a topic will I put myself in the center of my peers.” Nick has taken on several leadership roles because he enjoys helping others through community service. He was President of National Honor Society, Vice President of Freshmen Mentors, Treasurer of Key Club and

Treasurer of Mathletes. He debated in Model Congress throughout his high school career, played the saxophone in Marching Band from ninth though eleventh grade and worked in the high school store, Renaissance. He also participated in various fundraising activities outside of school to support different causes. Nick said he was a shy adolescent but high school brought him out of his shell. “I really liked the social aspect of high school; my grade has a lot of good people. I also had a lot of good teachers and enjoyed what I studied here.” In fact, if he could change one thing about high school, he said that he would change the days when “I didn’t do something because I was afraid. I’d want myself to not worry about focusing too much on what others thought and to just dive right in. I regret the days when I let my fear get in the way.” Nick is an Advanced Placement Scholar who took a full range of Advanced Placement classes and also enjoyed technology courses in Computer Graphics and Motion Graphics. The youngest of three boys - his eldest brother, T.J., is an accountant and his other brother, Ryan,

studies computer science at Pace University — Nick says he finds inspiration in his parents who are “the most hard-working and caring people in the world.” His favorite place to be is at home with his family. “They are my favorite people and give me memories with the greatest joys,” he said. But while home is where he is most happy, he is looking forward to living at school and experiencing college life. “People say it’s the best experience of your life; it’s the ultimate test to see how you can live on your own,” he said. While looking forward to his post-graduate plans, the Homecoming King nominee recalled some of his fondest school memories, such as being in the Homecoming Parade motorcade, hosting the National Honor Society ceremony, and as an elementary school student at Harbor Elementary School, enjoying Harbor Day. His advice to upcoming students? “Make the most out of high school. Be yourself and make friends with everyone. Don’t let trying to be cool make you a person who isn’t decent and not respectful of everyone. Be involved, do well academically, and be kind.”
