EAGLE COURT HELD - Local officials recently attended the Eagle Scout Court of Honor Ceremony where they congratulated William Viviano of Troop 691 in SeafordMassapequa, as he achieved the coveted rank of Eagle Scout. Eagle Scout is the highest honor a Boy Scout can achieve after completing hours of community service and attaining numerous merit badges. Supervisor Joseph Saladino proudly presented William with a citation in recognition of his hard work.

One Tap shoes laced and ready to go. Costume hung on the doorknob with care. Steps on constant replay in my head {flap, flap, flap, shuffle hop…} all in preparation for the big night, my return to the dance recital stage after a five-year hiatus. Cue the butterflies. I have had a love/ hate relationship with performing for the majority of my twenty years at the studio. On the one hand, there is nothing quite comparable to that moment when the lights come up, the music begins to play and the rush of the moment engulfs you to the point that you simply perform – no overthinking what step comes next, am I smiling too much,

not enough; are my arms graceful, my hands “jazzy”… Of course, there is also that other scenario, that one that plays out in your subconscious the night before – the one where all the carefully rehearsed choreography evaporates from your memory at the most inopportune moment; generally when you happen to be front and center, spotlight squarely on you, smile frozen as you desperately try to ad lib something, anything. I would say I’ve had my share of each extreme through the years. It began with my very first recital at the tender age of six when I ﬂew onstage mid-song, arms ﬂailing, as I tried to catch up with my classmates as

we performed “Somewhere Out There” in our lemon yellow tutus. It ended, some twenty-plus years later, in a “big girl” tutu of silvery sparkle, dancing to “Wizards of Winter,” only this time I made it out for the entire performance. As I write these words, the stage is set – pun intended – for my grand finale tomorrow evening. Two numbers to perform over two acts, including, appropriately enough, the grand finale to “One” from A Chorus Line. One more time in the spotlight, one last night to shine… at least that’s the plan, anyway. Coming Next Week: Curtain Call

But he’s not taking all the credit. “Everything I do is a team effort,” Conboy explained. “I can say without hesitation that all of my successes are shared successes. I was trained as a shared decision-maker and I think I brought that philosophy to the table.” When Conboy became Superintendent in 2010, he was full of optimism

The district took actions to reclaim its financial solvency. It restored staff positions, sports and programs. It began to advance with expanded programs and a completed five-year technology plan to support instruction. The graduation rate once again reached its highest levels with more students earning Regents diplomas and the Advanced Placement program has seen a record number of students challenging

themselves with AP courses and exams. For its achievement, Seaford High School has jumped in the ranks as one of the best high schools in the country. “Stability in leadership is why that happens,” he said. “That’s the most important thing in this business. If you can stabilize your organization with consistent leadership, things start to fall in place.” Conboy said he achieved stability by leading in a style that centers on trusting staff to do their jobs. “One of the great American generals said, ‘Don’t tell them how to do something, just tell them what you want done and let them do their job.’ You can guide them, you can advise them, but let them do it their way.” So Conboy focuses on the big picture to oversee his staff, “big picture meaning kids are treated respectfully, curriculum is innovative and vibrant and is happening every single

day, delivered by good people who have sense and enthusiasm for their profession and respect for kids. If you have that, the schools should be pretty calm and comfortable and I think my schools are,” he said. “I love it when I walk through these schools. Kids feel safe.” Another outcome of stability is restored trust among the community. Conboy points to the fact that Seaford’s budget votes in the past few years have experienced the highest passing percentage rates ever in the district’s history. “To me, when people come out to vote and Board meetings are calm, that translates to trust. I think that my team and my Board and the whole community here in the district are deserving of that trust.” In addition to those goals, two “enormously challenging” and long-

It’s been defined as an “end of an era” for Seaford Schools. For more than half a century, Seaford Superintendent Brian L. Conboy has been rooted in the district as a student, an athlete, a teacher and an administrator. Now after serving seven years in the district’s top post and capping a 33-year career, Conboy will retire June 30th with a legacy steeped in Seaford Pride, stability

and hope for the future. The district was in good standing academically, with the high school graduation rate hitting its highest in 2008. But Conboy’s hopes were soon deﬂated by a crashing economy, loss of rent from the Seaford Avenue School and a dwindling reserve fund, frustrating circumstances that contributed to two unsuccessful budget votes, causing the district to go on austerity for the 20112012 school year. Positions and staff were lost, sports and programs were cut. It was a time for a leader to reel in the lines and steer the district on a course to “preserve, restore and advance,” words that would become his mantra over the next several years. Those words took the district through Hurricane Sandy, which deeply affected the Harbor Elementary School community in particular, and through the tragic passing of a Seaford High School student during a

Continued From 7 awaited milestones were achieved under his watch: the sale of the Seaford Avenue Elementary School - which brought in more than $5 million that was placed in a special reserve fund to be used over a period of up to 10 years as required by New York State law and will generate thousands of dollars in tax revenue from the 112 condos that are being built on the site - and the construction of a much-needed access road at the Seaford Harbor Elementary School, which is expected to be completed before school

starts in the fall. An avid cyclist, Conboy sets goals for himself outside of school as well. Every summer, starting on the day of the high school graduation, he rides at least 100 miles a week on his bike so that he can ride at least 1,000 miles a summer. He’s done that for the last 10 years and he’s never missed a goal. Every Friday before Memorial Day, he starts the season by riding 100 miles from his driveway to Montauk Point. “I’ve been doing that for the past 16 years. It’s been a tremendous positive inﬂuence in my life. It’s a free feeling; great thinking

time. It’s like a celebration of Long Island and a kick off to the summer season.” Before he sets out to reach another goal, he says he’s leaving the district “satisfied. It’s not an easy job. During the seven years before I was superintendent, five people sat in this chair…I’m proud of the fact that everything I was able to achieve, started out with my being an effective teacher. I took that responsibility very seriously. I focused on developing good relationships with students and developing my reputation with the families. In my third year

teaching, my principal told me that everyone wanted to be in my class. I was astounded; I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t even have tenure yet… and it just built from there.” In addition to serving the district as an elementary teacher, Conboy was the Assistant Principal of Seaford High School and the Principal of Seaford Middle School and the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction and Personnel, K-12. As he says goodbye, he hopes that the Seaford Pride torch that his mentor Ray Buckley lit, will carry on. “He was a prominent person in the district.

Superintendent Retires His pride was something he wanted other people to carry on. I definitely took that to heart and wanted to spread that as much as possible. A lot of people that I brought into the Seaford family share the pride; they feel it and value it.” To his successor, Dr. Adele Pecora, who begins as Superintendent on July 1st, he offered these words of advice: “Spend the first year with your eyes and ears open. Explore, examine and take a lot of notes. Eventually you can start planting the seeds for the way you want things done. You’ll find out organically the things

that need your attention. Those things will be different than what I had to attend to.” To parents, staff and the community, Conboy said, “The overwhelming majority of people I’ve dealt with in this district, whether, a student, family, staff member, business owner, have been beautiful; really wonderful people… I’ve gotten a lot of attention, a lot of accolades and a lot of support and I’m very thankful for all of that. It’s been a great run.”
