The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization that serves more than 3,000 people each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank, where its Suffolk County United Veterans project is based. The organization was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County; the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. Of Energy and Evolution “The energy of the mind is the essence of life.” ~ Aristotle They say that what you put out into the universe in the form of energy, you receive back tenfold. In some manner, at some point in time, life cycles back around to pay us the karma we are supposedly owed. Most often, this is associated with the negative end of the spectrum; rarely are the positive applications of this theory every truly recognized and appreciated. I have often looked to those who seem the most consistently content and have wondered what it is that makes them able to sustain such a healthy sense of optimism and an inner peace that radiates outwardly into the universe. Simply put, they are

genuinely happy. They savor those aspects of life which many of us often take for granted. They make it a point to appreciate each and every moment, and to pay it forward in the manner in which they interact with others. To me, these are the types of individuals we should all strive to surround ourselves with, each and every day. Any opportunity to associate with a positive, breath of fresh air-type persona should be welcomed with open arms; there is no such thing as too much sunshine. In the end, it makes the inevitable storm clouds which manifest along the way that much more tolerable. Of course, this concept is not so simple as mere happiness by association. True bliss comes from within, as

who we are and who we desire to become slowly transition toward being one and the same. They say people don’t change, but I wholeheartedly disagree with that sentiment. We each possess a unique capacity to peel back the layers en route to uncovering infinite unknown qualities and characteristics as we continue to evolve over time. And change we do, each and every day, as our interactions with others, the circumstances we are faced with and our growth as human beings develop. There is no end to this evolution. We are a species built on progress. Why not begin with our own respective psyches? With a bit a time and effort, perhaps we, too, can one day be worthy of this admiration once only reserved for others.

Help Hope & Smiles Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to helping children with autism, recently teamed up with Diana’s Music Lessons, a private inhome music lesson and instrument rental company, to put on a free Autism-Friendly Parent and Child Music Workshop. The event ran for 75 minutes at the Seaford Public Library on June 2nd. Children ages 4-8 attended with a guardian to not only enjoy all that was offered, but to learn and grow through the wonders of music. The event was split into three segments: a drum circle, which helped children learn, retain and create drumming patterns; a keyboard lesson, which allowed the children to match color-coded keyboard keys to color-coded sheet music so they could easily learn simple songs; and, lastly, a creative music-based craft, which allowed these children to create and decorate their own percussion instruments. Each child has his or her own strengths, and this event helped showcase that. This won’t be the last free event that Help Hope & Smiles puts on. On June 11th, it was a family affair. Fourth-grade students and their parents worked together on the Great Bucket Tower Challenge, in which they had to work in groups and build load-bearing structures using a limited supply of

Each group had to first come up with a plan to ensure both a sturdy design and efficient use of the materials. Reflecting on Beginnings

Education came full circle for the members of Seaford High School’s Class of 2018 who celebrated Kindergarten Week from June 4th-8th. The students participated in different activities during their English classes that brought them back to their early days of school. The seniors were asked to bring in and share their favorite childhood stories. English language arts Chairwoman Linda Kanarek said some popular selections included “Good

Night Moon,” “The Giving Tree,” “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and Dr. Seuss books. For show and tell, seniors could bring in special objects or special visitors. Many brought in their grandparents to speak about what school was like when they grew up. The week ended with arts and crafts as day, as students colored and played with Play-Doh. Ms. Kanarek started kindergarten week 10 years ago in her Advanced

Placement literature class, and it has since grown into an annual tradition in all English classes. She has all of her students write letters to themselves, which she said she will mail to them in five years. “We ask the students to go back and reflect on where their school careers started,” she said. “It’s something that they look forward to as the end of senior year is a time of reflection and enjoyment.”

Jonathan Ferro of the Seaford UFSD, a student at Nassau BOCES Iris Wolfson High School (IWHS), earned the George Farber Outstanding Student Award for 2018. He has demonstrated a variety of remarkable traits including talent, commitment, honesty, diligence, compassion and high moral standards. Jonathan was honored during the eleventh annual awards celebration at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. Jonathan is an extremely diligent worker who always completes assignment either on time or early. He manages to balance a full courseload, a job outside of school and a rigorous workout schedule, all while maintaining an A average. Jonathan regularly shares new ideas to help improve the culture at Iris Wolfson. His involvement is so valued that when dignitaries from the State Education Department visited the school recently,

Jonathan was handpicked by Principal Lisa Paolucci to meet with them. Jonathan truly values the people he interacts with and gets along with everyone. He has a positive impact on his teachers and fellow students alike, due to his kind heart and generous nature. Among the words often used to describe Jonathan are honest, cordial, caring, social and funny. “Jonathan Ferro is an exemplary student and a role model,” observed his award nominator, Teacher Craig Fischer. “He has a tremendous work ethic and is one of the hardest working students at Iris Wolfson. Jonathan never takes the easy way out. He is always striving to challenge and improve himself.” “Jonathan is a model student, both academically and in terms of his character,” observed Principal Paolucci. “He’s a go-getter. He’s currently taking advanced placement classes with the intention

of continuing his education on the college level. He’s been a peer mentor, a tutor and works really well with both students and staff. Jonathan is one of the top students we have ever had. He is phenomenal.” “Winning this award makes me feel like all the hard work I’ve done as really paid off,” Jonathan said of the honor. “I plan to keep working hard to achieve the goals that I still have. The teachers here really know how to connect with the students,” he said of his experience at Iris Wolfson. “That’s a big part of what has helped me to succeed.” For the past eleven years, outstanding students have been earning this award in memory of former Nassau BOCES Board President George Farber, whose passion for improving the lives of students was surpassed only by her love and care for them. Farber was the longest-serving board member in Nassau County, having served from 1971 to 2009.
