New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! There are plenty of success stories of people who benefited from their services. One in particular I’d like to spotlight is Nina’s. Nina was a single mother with one son. They both had a chronic illness that significantly impacted their health. She had struggled in the past to establish a life for her family because of the unpredictable nature of their health. All New Ground families and Veterans require a unique approach and plan of action, but this was considerably greater for Nina. She needed supports put in place to ensure her family’s future despite the ongoing need for unexpected lengthy breaks from employment. New Ground helped Nina to secure part time employment that was flexible, willing to adjust her schedule when she or her son suddenly required hospitalization or recovery time at home. Nina did significant work with her Social Worker on budgeting, creating a savings and developing strategies to adjust her spending if her household income suddenly decreased for
weeks at a time. New Ground assisted her with applying and obtaining certain benefits her family was eligible for because of their chronic illness. This included a housing choice voucher, allowing Nina to attain a market rent apartment while she paid an affordable portion of the rent based on her household income. After just under four years, Nina and her son successfully graduated into permanent housing. An apartment was found in the same neighborhood where their program apartment was located, ensuring Nina’s continued easy commute to work and her son’s continuation in the school district he had only recently entered. As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available! You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services. Their Work For Food program is also another way the community can become involved with the farm. This program allows people to volunteer their time and contribute as few or as many hours as desired, in replace for a bundle of fresh organic food! For 18 students at Seaford High School, Science Research Night on June 5 was the culmination of many months of hard work. Students shared their poster presentations in the library as administrators, teachers and family members inquired about the in-depth projects representing a variety of scientific fields. Students enrolled in the full-year science research course were able to select topics of their choice and could work independently or in small groups. At Science Research Night, each student or team displayed a poster that included the research question, background information, purpose, methods, procedure, data analysis and results. “The science research program is all based on their interests,” said science teacher Janine Cupo, who oversees the program with teacher Mary Simons. “I want the students to feel proud of themselves and to

Making Kindergartners Feel Welcome
It’s been a busy few months for Seaford High School’s Class of 2033. Although they won’t start kindergarten until September, those children who will be attending Seaford Manor Elementary School have been getting acquainted with their future surroundings. The school hosted its fifth and final kindergarten orientation program on June 5. This was an opportunity for them to give them a true taste of school life. The orientation process started in the winter with registration followed by a literacy experience, a specials experience and an
academic screening. Ms. Emmerich said the purpose of the orientation sessions are to get students ready for the first of 13 years of school in Seaford. “In the blink of an eye, you’ll be sitting at their high school graduation,” she told parents, some who have students already in elementary school and others who are brand new to the Manor community. At most recent orientation session, current kindergartners Meghan Feil, Kate Flemen, Michael Obrochta and Madison Rainey spoke to the room of parents and pre-K students to share their first-year experiences,
including learning to read and write. As parents stayed to learn more about the school from Principal Debra Emmerich and Assistant Principal Mary Ellen Kakalos, the pre-K students got to visit classrooms to become acquainted with the four kindergarten teachers and their future schoolmates. The incoming kindergartners — 72 enrolled so far — familiarized themselves with school routines such as walking through the cafeteria and riding a school bus, which made a GIRL SCOUT AMBASSADOR TROOP 3271 HONORED - Seaford/Wantagh short journey across the Girl Scout Ambassador Troop 3271 was recently honored at an award ceremony at St. parking lot. Francis de Chantal. These Graduating Seniors have been together since kindergarten, with two very welcome additions joining the troop at the start of middle school. Over the years, the girls have shared many adventures, taken advantage of a number of educational opportunities, performed a good deal of community service, and enjoyed countless laughs. Camping trips to Blue Bay, fire circle fun, and sleeping under the enormous whale at the Museum of Natural History were just a few of the girls’ favorite memories. As troop spokesperson Katie Crawford stated, “I think Troop 3271 is evidence of the amazing sisterhood Girls Scouts can provide. As we continue on to the next stage of our lives, I hope we will always remember that our friendships are like a circle, they have no end.”
