With so many exciting month-long events, temperate weather for people who live in areas of the world where summer is about to begin and special occasions like Father’s Day and school graduations, June is a popular month. Productive Ways To Spend The Summer After Graduation Graduation is a momentous day in the lives of college students. After years of schooling that dates all the way back to preschool or kindergarten, newly minted college graduates are finally ready to begin their professional lives. That can be a scary prospect for some students, especially those who graduate without jobs lined up. The summer after graduating from college can be a time like no other in the lives of new graduates. It can be easy to grow dejected as weeks or months go by without receiving a job offer, but spending the summer after graduation as productively as possible can help graduates overcome any dejection they might feel and increase their chances of landing a job. • Contact career services offices at your alma mater. Career services offices can help recent graduates as they look for their first jobs out of college. Such offices may have access to job and internship opportunities that grads do not. In addition, they may coach grads on interviewing techniques and on ways to stand out in crowded job markets. • Seek internships. If part - or full-time employment is proving elusive, don’t be afraid to seek and ultimately accept internships, which can provide a way for grads to get their foot in the doors in certain industries. Summer internships may already be filled, so scour job boards for fall or winter internships.

• Network. Students who interned can get in touch with their past supervisors or mentors and find out if the company is hiring. Such people may be more inclined to bring someone with direct experience onboard — even if that experience was brief and unpaid. In addition, grads can connect with adjunct professors who work in their desired fields. • When job hunting, don’t get pigeon-holed by your major. Just because a student graduates with a particular degree does not mean he or she needs to look for work in that field. In fact, many companies may prefer entry-level applicants with degrees that are not specific to their industries so their new hires are blank slates who can be easily trained. • Customize a résumé for every job. Be sure the curriculum vitae is not static. Write and refine résumés for each job you apply for, mildly tweaking the wording or accomplishments to address the key phrases used in the job listing. It can be tempting for recent college grads to spend the summers after graduation relaxing, but those who spend that time productively may land jobs more quickly than those who do not.

The Amazing Month Of June

Seaford High School seniors got a special, socially distant send-off on June 1, returning to the place where they made so many memories in the last four years until the COVID-19 pandemic closed schools. Teachers, coaches and administrators lined the parking lot to cheer for the soon-to-be graduates as they passed through in a car parade. One by one, cars entered the north parking lot under an arch of green and white balloons. After being greeted by Principal Scott Bersin, each car went up one lane and down the other. At the halfway

point were Superintendent Dr. Adele Pecora and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction John Striffolino to extend their warm wishes. Teachers from all four Seaford schools stood at spots marked 15 feet apart, cheering, waving and holding up signs, with “I miss you” and “Good luck” among the most commonly shouted phrases as the seniors passed by. Seniors were driven by family members so they could soak in the moment and make those personal connections with their teachers, even if it was

As the cars headed back out to Seaman’s Neck Road, seniors could look for their pictures on the fence along the north side of the school property. Choosing a college major is an important decision that many students delay making until their sophomore or even junior years. Only after taking a few courses and uncovering one’s interests do some college students figure out what they want to do with their lives. Each student is different, and while some may pursue a degree based on a particular passion, others may choose majors that can lead to high-paying jobs. While men often lean toward majors like engineering and computer science that have traditionally been linked to high earnings, women have historically gravitated to lowerpaying specialties like education and social sciences, but in recent years a shift has

occurred, and more women have begun to choose majors associated with higher post-graduate salaries. Reports from the career guidance site Glassdoor analyzed how much male and female professionals with the same college degree earned and identified many instances in which women went on to earn more than men in the first five years of their career. They’ve identified several majors where female college graduates can earn as much or more than their male counterparts and find successful careers.

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, non-profits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is wellrounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met. In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. Her goal is to provide each and every one of her clients with a warm, happy, positive and empathetic experience before, during and after each visit. She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. Unlike your average hair salon, Scanlon’s uses fresh new sanitized tools and capes on all her clients. She now also offers one on one personal service with gloves and masks, and will wash and sanitize any area which was touched during the visit. Additionally, if you would like to have your hair service done outside, Scanlon’s will gladly honor that request. “Everyone’s safety and comfort is our primary concern”, says owner Eileen Scanlon. While Seaford High School valedictorian Jason Linzer and salutatorian Matt Karounos earned their respective rankings because of their strong academic performances, their contributions in all aspects of school life has distinguished them among the 191 members of this year’s senior class. They are also standout athletes and model citizens. Seaford High School Principal Scott Bersin recently announced that Jason and Matt are the top-ranked graduates in the Class of 2020. Jason earned a weighted grade point average of 107.287, followed by Matt with a 105.709 GPA. “I am obviously very happy,” Matt said. “It is nice when all of your hard work comes together and you get recognized for it.” Jason added that he is grateful to be rewarded for his efforts and he will continue his strong work ethic and pursuit of knowledge throughout senior year to set himself up for success in college and beyond. A product of Seaford Manor Elementary School, Jason is a devoted long-distance runner who is a member of the cross country, winter track and spring track teams and a captain of all three. He has been a county champion and received All-State and All-Conference honors. Jason also is a member of Freshmen Mentors, the National Honor Society and the Seaford Fire Department’s Explorers program. Recently, he was named a commended student by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Jason said his favorite classes in high school have been math and science including pre-calculus, statistics, calculus, biology, chemistry and physics. He is a member of the Science Olympiad team and the science research program, and this summer did volunteer cancer research at Stony Brook Hospital’s Health Science Center. Jason plans to major in biochemistry at Stony Brook University on a pre-medicine Seaford High School seniors Jason Linzer, left, and Matt Karounos track. have been named the valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, Matt, who got his start at Seaford Harbor Elementary School, is playing his third season on the varsity soccer team and has been a captain for two seasons. He also plays on the varsity basketball and baseball of the Class of 2020. teams, is a member of the Seaford Athletic Leadership Council, Freshmen Mentors and the National Honor Society, in addition to regularly volunteering for the food pantry at a church in Dix Hills. He plans to major in Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Notre Dame. One particular passion for Matt is his work with the Best Buddies club, which pairs high school students with peers with intellectual and developmental disabilities in one-to-one friendships. Matt is vice president of the club and this past summer attended a leadership conference at Indiana University, bringing many ideas back to Seaford he would like to implement. As he ponders his college choices, he is considering majoring in either special education or mathematics with a concentration in statistics. Jason and Matt have both taken 13 Advanced Placement courses and are expected to be among the first Seaford graduates to earn an AP Capstone diploma after taking the two courses, AP Seminar and AP Research, during their sophomore and junior years. Guidance Counselor Suzanne Cosenza said she is extremely proud of both of them. She described Jason as an exceptional and focused student who is always looking to take the most challenging courses. About Matt, she noted that his work with Best Buddies and his desire to see that every student is included “speaks of his heart.”

CVS Drive Thru Testing Pennsylvania and Texas. “While the large-scale test sites we’ve been operating since early April have proven successful, this new approach allows us to utilize our presence in communities across the country and bring testing closer to home,” said Larry J.
