The Town of Hempstead’s Senior Summer Beach Program is set to begin its 48th season at Lido Beach Town Park on Monday, June 22nd. A Storybook Summer for Seniors is all about enjoying a summer of fun, friends and great activities during the ten-week program at Lido Beach Town Park. From taking an aqua-exercise class and listening to live music, to enjoying craft classes and sing-alongs under Lido’s “mushroom” sun shelters, the Senior Summer Beach Program provides the perfect way for seniors to spend their summer days. Mature Hempstead Town residents ages 60 and better can participate in a wide array of activities, daily classes and entertainment that is offered. In addition to painting, fitness classes, dancing, crafts, aquatic exercises, bocce and movies, the Senior Summer Beach Program features daily live performances under a festive tent. This summer, during Senior-Junior Week, special activities are planned for seniors who wish to share their summer

beach experience with their grandchildren (preregistration required). The Senior Summer Beach Program takes place weekdays from June 22nd through August 28th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Lido Beach Town Park located at 630 Lido Boulevard. Senior Summer Beach Program passes are issued to senior residents and allow free admission and free parking weekdays. Those who prefer not to drive may take free Senior Enrichment bus transportation from designated pick-up stations on appointed days. Although refreshments are available for purchase, it is suggested that participants bring their own lunch. Senior residents who have not received their free Senior Summer Beach pass in the mail may obtain a replacement card upon their first visit to the program. Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. is pleased to announce its annual Regatta and Awards dinner which will take place over two days: on June 18th at the Oyster Bay Marine Center and on June 20th at the Sagamore Yacht Club, both in Oyster Bay. Proceeds will benefit services offered by ADRC and help fund local Alzheimer’s research and support. The Regatta events will begin with The Classics on Thursday, June 18th, 2015 at the Oyster Bay Marine Center, 5 Bay Avenue in Oyster Bay, starting at 5 p.m. Proceeds from this event will benefit both ADRC and Oakcliff Sailing. Non-members of Oakcliff Sailing will have the opportunity to crew on vintage wooden yachts, the oldest one dating

back to 1903. In order to participate, non-members must raise a minimum of $150. The Plastics will race on Saturday, June 20th, beginning at the Sagamore Yacht Club, located at 1 Bay Avenue, Oyster Bay. Boats of any size and skippers of any level of racing experience are invited to take part. Participants must register online prior to the event and present sponsor donations upon arrival. Captains will meet at noon and First Gun of the Pursuit Race will sound promptly at 1 p.m. Paddling for Poker will also commence the same day. This event is open to all paddle boarders and kayakers, who should meet at 2 p.m. at Beekman Beach, 1 West Avenue,

Simmer Down, Society By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Well, it’s happened. Still days away from the official start of summer, and already the first utterings of “it’s too hot” have been heard. After one of the most bitterly cold, snowiest winters on record, one that seemed to stretch on far past its allotted time, and we can’t even appreciate the warmth for more than a day. What is it that makes our society so…unsatisfied? We live in one of the most ideal climate zones where we are fortunate to experience all four seasons for equal periods of time throughout the year. comment that it’s “such a beautiful day,” we are more often than not in a constant state of complaint. Sure, any extreme can be “too much” for some to handle; but, I think we’ve become so accustomed to the temperaturecontrolled bubbles that we live in that our sensitivity to such things is absurdly heightened. Seasons are designed to be enjoyed outdoors, at least for part of the time. Personally, I look forward to the warmth of spring and summer, the extended daylight hours and the ample activities available – from free concerts to baseball games to outdoor theatre and dance performances to

fireworks…the options are endless. The last thing I want to do is spend my time hibernating in a dimlylit, air-conditioned cave of sorts, one with all the windows shut, blinds drawn and outside world blocked out. No thank you. Let’s put things in perspective, people. We don’t live in a desert. We live on an island, one bordered by beaches on every coast. In between, there are lakes and rivers and plenty of pools of both the indoor and outdoor variety. I’m sure we can manage to survive a few months of summer. Maybe, if we really try, we might even manage to enjoy it.

On Thursday, June 18th, St. Rose Church will be hosting a resource fair and substance abuse event. The resource fair begins at 6 p.m. and the formal program at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium. Families In Support of Treatment (F.I.S.T.) events have taken place throughout Long Island in an effort to provide information, resources, and support for those affected by alcohol and other substances and the community at large. This event is free of charge and open to all people in the surrounding communities. The resource fair will include numerous prevention, support, and intervention “helps” for all community members. The program will include speakers who will provide an overview of the epidemic, current trends, effects on family members, prevention and risk factors, treatment options, success stories, hope and advocacy. Massapequa has been profoundly affected by the consequences of alcohol and other drug use. In

recent years, addiction to alcohol, prescription and illicit drugs has skyrocketed. Addiction causes devastation to individuals, families and communities; it does not discriminate. Help is available, and this event promises to be a vehicle to unite concerned individuals, families and communities to address this issue and provide support for individuals in need. The information and resources that F.I.S.T. has to offer are abundant and invaluable. According to Anthony Rizzuto, Executive Director of F.I.S.T., “Addiction has and continues to have devastating effects on individuals, families, and our communities. It is imperative to empower ourselves through education, resources, and work to connect those in need with the help available.” Jamie Bogenshutz, Executive Director of YES Community Counseling Center, added, “It is so important that our community comes

together to address this growing problem. As the community’s licensed drug treatment provider, we are painfully aware that no one is immune from the consequences of addiction, but working together, we know we can make a real difference in people’s lives.” Danielle LaRose, Director of Outreach at St. Rose of Lima, also stated, “This evening program has been part of our active prayer. To join as a community and provide love, support, prayers and guidance to all those families and individuals who struggle with addiction is our forever goal” The Massapequa Planning Committee includes St. Rose Church, YES Community Counseling Center, Nassau County Police Department, Long Island Recovery Advocates, Seafield, Ambrosia, American Addictions Center and the Massapequa PTA, all stakeholders who recognize that this is an epidemic that we cannot wish away.

Summer Art Adventure the art of working with live animals. Selmer’s Pet Land has brought smiles to the faces of young artists as their cooperative models have inspired beautiful works of art. In three twoweek sessions for teens ages 12-14 there are projects in drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, digital design, mixed media, and a field trip to a plein air painting experience. The Art League of Long Island’s Summer Art Adventure, now in its 20th year welcomes fresh faces and fresh ideas for 2015. Under the guidance of new Summer Art Adventure Program Director Marianne Mead, the arts enrichment program that has served a generation of children has extended its weekly sessions for ages 5-14 from four weeks to six weeks of summer fun. New themes and approaches have been introduced in addition to offering longtime favorite activities. Formerly held at the Elwood Middle School and at the Art League’s center in Dix Hills, the six-week sessions will be held at the Chestnut Hill Elementary School in Dix Hills. Parents have the option of selecting one or more weekly sessions starting week of June 29th and ending week of August 3rd. From 9 to 11:30 a.m. young children ages 5 and 6 and from 9am to 2pm children and teens ages 7-12 will learn drawing, painting, crafts, and sculpture. Back again is “Animal Kingdom” week, where kids discover

Preparing For Summer Beginning on June 21st, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck will open up the 2015 summer season for young campers with special needs and disabilities. There will be ten sessions throughout the course of the summer, each lasting for six days. Additional information and registration forms can be found online at www. camppaquatuck.com. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck provides services and opportunities for children and young adults ages

6 to 21 to learn while having fun. Campers can enjoy activities such as boating, arts and crafts, swimming, music, and sports. The supportive environment helps children to develop selfesteem and to achieve personal growth while enjoying recreational activities. The camp has been helping children flourish since its early stages in 1941, when the Rotary Club of the Moriches arranged a beach-side

picnic for children with Polio. This inspired the founding of the official camp in 1948, when Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck held its first summer session for 25 children with Polio. Today, it continues to be a safe place where specialneeds campers can enjoy themselves and broaden their horizons. Improvements have been made to the dormitories and the dining hall to provide the best experience possible for the campers. Thanks

to the renovations that were made to the dining hall, campers and staff members are now able to eat together rather than in shifts. Private donations are the camp’s sole source of funding; therefore, yearround fundraising efforts are critical to the camp’s operations. Camp Pa-QuaTuck has teamed up with the local Rotary Clubs and other organizations to hold these charitable events including a Chinese Auction, 5K Run,

Breakfast with Santa, Spring Fling Joy Prom, Bradstock, Oktoberfest, Spooky Walk, the Fuoco Memorial Golf Outing, and the Inlet Ride BikeA-Thon. “We are excited to open up our 68th season to our new and returning campers,” said Bridget Costello, Director of Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. “It is because of the efforts of the Moriches Rotary Club, private donors, and other groups that we have been able to open
