I recently read an article in the latest issue of Editor & Publisher magazine which touched on the apparent surge in the success of community newspapers over the last several years, a direct counterpoint to the oftpeddled theory that “print is dead.” The majority of credit for these weeklies’ steady success seems to point to their unique ability to provide extremely localized content that, quite simply, cannot be found anywhere else. While many national and daily chains have resorted to using wire services to supplement their content, community publications remain entrenched in those neighborhoods they serve. Case in point: South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers

currently consists of 23 separate editions, circulating to at least double the number of individual neighborhoods, taking in dozens of school districts, libraries, local sports organizations, clubs, religious institutions, and on and on. We accept submissions directly from these groups, as well as any readers who may have something newsworthy to submit. How many publications can boast that? The point is, not many, leading to a flourishing community weekly that caters to its audience. Imagine that. Growing up, South Bay was always the publication you waited to receive in the mail each week, anxious to flip through the pages to read the latest highlights from your neighborhood, scan through

the wedding and birth announcements, academic and athletic accomplishments and more. How exciting it was to actually know some of these people who were featured – and occasionally, if you were lucky, to see your own name in print. Many clippings in my scrapbook are from none other than the old South Bay. How fulfilling to know that, over 60 years after its initial founding, our publication is still providing the same service to the community, to individuals within each neighborhood we reach. You simply can’t replace that sort of personalized touch. So, to all those weeklies out there – keep cranking. Your influence is being widely felt across the nation, one community at a time.

Superintendents, served to honor valedictorians and salutatorians throughout Nassau County. The event was emceed by Class of 2016 Celebrating Excellence Breakfast Committee Chairperson and Levittown Union Free School District Superintendent Dr. Tonie McDonald, and also featured an inspiring speech by internationally renowned author Thomas Maier. Mr. Maier used historical contexts and

cited personal experiences as an investigative journalist to stress to students the importance of being able to adapt in an ever-changing world, keeping an open mind and striving to continue their stellar work in college and beyond. More than 100 Wantagh High School seniors were recognized for outstanding achievements during the annual Senior Awards Night held in the school auditorium. This cherished tradition recognizes the student’ overall academic accomplishments, community service, extracurricular involvement and abilities

to overcome obstacles during their four years of high school. During the ceremony, the students received scholarship money from local community businesses and organizations, as well as special honors from government officials. Principal Carolyn Breivogel congratulated the students on their years of dedication and

enthusiasm to academics, sports, the arts and community service, and thanked the teachers for their commitment to education. To the students, she said, “You always hear me say that your name is your most prized possession, and this evening we will pay tribute to all of your names.”

Patriotic Essays During the annual speech/essay contest, the students were required to write an essay that answered the question, “When did you first understand the importance of Memorial Day?” The three top essays were chosen from each class. The winners received a certificate from the English department and were invited to walk in the community’s Memorial Day parade, which was canceled this year due to severe weather.

Donna DeLucia-Troisi, Seaford Harbor Elementary School Principal, always knew in her heart that she was born to be an educator. As a child, she remembers lining up her dolls to form a classroom of “students” and dressing as a nun to play the role of a parochial school teacher. A leader by nature, when she started kindergarten, she remembers taking the hand of a crying young boy to comfort him on the first day of school. Now, after 33 years as an educator, DeLucia-Troisi reflects on her career as she prepares to retire on June 30th. “I’ve worked with great people here; wonderful teachers and administrators,” she said as she sat at the conference table in her office. “I feel we all grew up together and emerged as administrators; we went through the same steps together; learned from each other. The whole team is a great team.” DeLucia-Troisi became Principal of the Harbor School 10 years ago after serving six years as Assistant Principal under both Philip Goldstein and John Striffolino. Throughout her journey, she gained advice from her colleagues that molded her into the formidable administrator she is today. She can still hear the voice of Goldstein advising her to “Listen first, think things through, then react.” Her husband, Thomas, whom she met during her first teaching job at her alma mater, St. Mary’s School in Woodside, has been her mentor throughout her administrative career. He always reminds her to “not take things too seriously! Some people are never happy.” DeLucia-Troisi taught second grade at St. Mary’s and started its full-day kindergarten program. She then went on to teach pre-K and kindergarten in the Elmont School District. She left a tenure-track position in Elmont to teach the primary grades in the Lawrence School District and was promoted to Curriculum Coordinator, a position that tackled the challenges of state testing, ESL and staff development, before coming to Seaford. Along the way,

she was also guided by these words of wisdom: “Respect everyone equally,” “Model what you want others to see in you,” “Don’t be afraid to ask for advice,” and “Every day is a new day.” The last one, written on a plaque that hangs behind her desk, is what she would consider her mantra. “I tell this to my students all the time,” she said. “What’s done is done. Today is a new day; start fresh. It gives them the strength to shake things off and move on.”

DeLucia-Troisi and her husband, an Assistant Superintendent in the Valley Stream Central High School District, settled in Seaford in 1991, where Tom lived for part of his childhood. They raised two sons, Daniel, 27, a special education teacher, and John, 22, an accountant. Her parents, Cornelius, 90, and Emily, 84, moved from Queens to Seaford as well 15 years ago. “Seaford is a very tight community; people support each other,” DeLucia-Troisi said. “I was very impressed by the community’s strong response after Superstorm Sandy. Everyone donated to those families in need. This

was not the first time that I experienced the generosity of the community. At other times, I have attended fundraisers for different families who were suffering through a tragic loss or the high cost of medical care.” Reminiscing about her teaching days, DeLucia-Troisi flipped through a photo album and pointed to a picture of herself with former student, Christine Reilly, who had just published her first book, “Sunday’s on the Phone to Monday.” When a student achieves success, it is so thrilling; you feel like their mother; that you helped nurture their success.” If she could have done anything differently as an administrator, she would have spent more time in the classrooms, if time permitted. “Being a principal can be like heading a triage unit; there are always issues that come up and you have to prioritize what needs the most attention,” she explained. “I used to have checklists and would feel bad if I didn’t get through them, but I learned that you can’t plan your entire day; that there are always things that come up that will derail those lists. You just have to be able to balance that and have patience.” Her advice to her successor: “Make sure you listen and observe, especially during the first year, and then include the faculty in decisions involving making changes or adjustments to the school.” As she gets closer to a new beginning in her life, she looks forward to relaxing, spending time with family, traveling, bike-riding and, perhaps, going back to school or taking singing lessons as she did years ago. “I love to sing,” she said with a smile. But without a doubt, she says, what she will miss the most when she retires are “my kids.” “First and foremost my career has been about the children,” she said. “I hope I am remembered as a fair but friendly and caring principal that put the children first.”

Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures

Northwell Health Relocates Northwell Health has relocated its Long Island headquarters to a 100,000-square-foot building at 2000 Marcus Avenue in New Hyde Park. The leased building is home to about 300 employees within Northwell Health administration, including executive leadership and the health system’s strategic planning, legal, marketing and communications, managed care, patient and customer experience and corporate

security departments, as well as the Northwell Health Foundation. The three-story building consists of 33,000-squarefeet of garage space and 4,000-square-feet of conference space, including a conference center that can accommodate 275 people and is outfitted with integrated audio visual technologies, including a 30 foot wide video wall broadcasting Northwell Health and Event information. Other

amenities will include a café operated by Unidine with a special focus on healthy choices. The company’s previous Long Island headquarters at 145 Community Drive in Great Neck is being used for other Northwell Health staff. The health system also has New York City headquarters at 130 E. 59th Street in Manhattan, where it occupies three floors of a 16-story building.
