Fifty-six Seaford Middle School students with strong academic and civic promise were inducted into National Junior Honor Society during a formal ceremony before family and friends. The five officers, President Julia Gambino, Vice President Kathleen Tuohy, Secretary Chelsea Lin, Treasurer Mary Lynch and Historian Sarah Keane began the ceremony by coming on stage and lighting a candle for scholarship, service, leadership, character and citizenship, the four hallmarks of the society. Each inductee then crossed the stage to receive a pin and certificate. Those selected for membership must have a grade-point average of 90 or above, complete six or more service hours per month while maintaining a 90 or above average, and possess scholarship, service leadership, character and citizenship. Athlete, musician, robotics aficionado. Seaford High School Salutatorian Evan Groder has had his hand in almost every facet of high school life. Proud of his wellrounded background while maintaining a 102.75 grade point average, Evan looks forward to attending Binghamton University in the fall. While he is undecided about his major, he is confident that as he explores college, he will

find a profession that he loves and will advance in his field. As an athlete, Evan played lacrosse and soccer throughout high school. As a musician, he was first chair baritone in Jazz Band, a NYSSMA AllCounty musician, played in the Seaford Community Band and was a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. Skilled in computer coding, he was Vice president of the

Robotic Club and helped bring the team to the semi-finals, the furthest the team has ever gone in the competition. Evan also held various offices, including Parliamentarian of National Honor Society and Secretary for Freshman Mentors and Tri-M, and participated in a host of community service projects, including helping with the St. Mark’s Pumpkin Patch and cooking and delivering food for Bethany House, a local homeless shelter. One of Evan’s greatest high school memories was participating in the highly selective Boy’s State, a summer leadership and citizenship program sponsored by the American Legion. He and 3,000 top students from across the state stayed a week at SUNY Morrisville with the goal of creating a New York State government. Completion of the Boy’s State is considered to carry as much weight as the Boy Scout Eagle Award. Evan attributes his success to being able to visualize his goals and then making them happen, even obsessing over them,

which he says could be a flaw. That skill has enabled him to achieve numerous honors and recognitions including the AP Award in Statistics, Biology, and Psychology, earning the AP Scholar with Distinction, making the Principals List of Honor, and becoming a Scholar-Athlete. He also received the PTSA Service Award three years in a row. Evan said he looks up to successful business leaders such as Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos because they embody accomplishment in their fields. He also drew inspiration from his parents and teachers, especially second–grade teacher Katie Haug, middle school science teacher Adam Cohen and high school math teacher Kevin O’Reilly. As he prepares to leave his hometown, he shared this advice for underclassmen: “If you want to try something that you think is out of your comfort zone and are uneasy about it, just go for it. A fear of failure should not hold anyone back from future success.”

Hybrid Theory ourselves as somewhat of a “hybrid” publication; far more news content than a shopper, but without the editorial staff of, say, a subscription-based community newspaper like those found in so many small towns in our area. While this description might be confusing to some, upon further explanation at the awards dinner, I saw the familiar nod of recognition – oh, that’s a pretty nice little niche you have there… Yes, yes it is. As such, we invite the readers, those community members whom we serve, to contribute their own happenings, photos, upcoming events and more – all with the notion that, at no cost to them, they can be a part of our next publication. Parents, teachers, coaches and scouting leaders are all welcome to participate in publicizing those individual

accomplishments they work so diligently to help achieve. I remember being a student myself back at the end of high school and having my mom drop my graduation announcement off at the old office on Hoffman Avenue in Lindenhurst knowing that, the following week, I would receive my copy of “The South Bay” and find my picture inside. How exciting to be a part of the hometown paper; and to share the good news with all my friends and neighbors. The world of journalism is a broad one indeed, one that takes in many different styles and degrees of substance, and in the end provides a little something for everyone. I recently had the pleasure of attending the 2017 Press Club of Long Island Media Awards; this year, not only as a member of the Board of Directors, but as an award recipient. Our Seasons Magazine was honored with second place in the Best Magazine category, a proud moment for our fledgling publication. While there, I had the opportunity to chat with several local journalists in attendance about topics ranging from the state of the media as a whole to our own publication’s role in the journalism community on Long Island. Seaford Skypes had a lot of questions for them, such as what they study, what type of sports they play, if they get homework, and what the weather is like there. Cruz also asked if they could send any supplies or any other items they may need. The class had already decided to send cards and some of their favorite books, and will be sending crayons, markers, and puzzles. The Jamaican class, which consisted of 3-5 year olds, sang several verses of “Old McDonald Had a Farm” to their new Seaford friends. After

the Skype session, Mr. DiBlasi answered more questions and described to the children the region in which the school was constructed and what life is like there. He also said that his daughter, who is blond and light-skinned, was the first person they saw like her. “They wanted to touch her skin to see if it felt like theirs,” he said. The students were very excited to learn about Jamaica and thanked Mr. DiBlasi and Alexandra for sharing their experience with them.

It all started in a middle school Exploratories class, an elective she took in Forensic Science that set her on her path for her future. Now as she graduates as Seaford High School’s Valedictorian, Sarah Umstadt will soon attend the Macaulay Honors College at John Jay College to study Forensic Psychology and International Crime. Defining herself as someone with a strong ethic, Sarah said she didn’t set out to be in the number one slot or even in the top 25. “I just always tried to do my personal best,” she said. That mindset drove her to a 102.77 grade point average. Sarah plans to one day work for the FBI, CIA or Department of Homeland Security and hopes that she will have the opportunity

to travel as much as possible. Among her most cherished memories of high school are the trips she has taken to Disney and Hawaii as a flutist in Band, and a family trip to Italy where she enjoyed experiencing her heritage. Throughout high school, she struck a balance between academics, extracurriculars and social activities. A NYSSMA AllCounty musician, she was a member of the Pep Band, Pit Orchestra, Symphonic Band and Marching Band. In Flute Choir, she organized and directed a group of seven flute players who performed at school chamber concerts. She helped others through her involvement in Key Club and Freshman Mentors, a club that helps freshmen acclimate to high school. Outside of school, she

volunteered as a camp counselor in the Seaford Summer Music Camp, made about 150 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches once a month that were distributed to homeless shelters through St. Ann’s Church in Brentwood, and helped cook and distribute food in Long Beach for victims of Superstorm Sandy through Operation BBQ Relief. Sarah is a member of National Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society and the Principals List of Honor for having over a 90 average in every class in every quarter. She received the PTSA Academic and Service Award, the AP Scholar Award, AP U.S. History Award, and AP English Language and Composition Award. Sarah points to her parents as “exceptional role models” as well as seventhgrade social studies teacher Laura Maciag and high school Spanish teacher Patricia Foley, who she felt both went beyond the subject matter and taught her life skills that she still uses today, such as “how not to crumble under pressure when things get tough.” Because of Ms. Foley’s impact, Sarah plans to minor in Spanish in college. Sarah offered this advice to underclassmen: “Dedicate most of your time to school work, but do not forget to have fun because high school truly is the best four years and the memories will last forever.”
