Counting money is an important life skill, and second-graders at Seaford Harbor Elementary School got some practice during a hands-on math lesson. Students in Krista Clark’s class recently played Race to a Dollar, with the competition adding excitement. Students paired up and took turns rolling a die that had different amounts on each side. They added the money to their piggy banks to see who would reach a dollar first. After a winner emerged in each group, students then competed to see who could earn the most money in a set period of time. They learned how to exchange the smaller coins for larger denominations.

Based in Levittown, New Ground offers Veterans and families the following main programs to truly help them conquer homelessness: their Long Term Housing Program, their JumpStart Program and their Veterans Program. Their services include Adult Workshops, Career Development, Education Advocacy, Education Assistance, Financial Literacy, Reading All-Stars, Special Memories and Tutoring.
This organization is also in need of additional volunteers to help out in various areas. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available! You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services.
Since opening their doors, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and into permanent stable housing. New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. This organization began all from the vision of an educator that was committed to providing a safe haven for those living in poverty. This educator saw that shelters were only providing a short-term fix to a problem that needed a real, lasting solution. After envisioning an organization that provided a holistic suite of support services while empowering participants to help themselves, she founded New Ground in 1991 to do just that.
Rebuilding Together Long Island is a 501(c)(3) non-profit volunteer organization that provides free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our Veterans, people with disabilities and families with children who meet their financial criteria. Their mission is to Repair Homes, Revitalize Communities and Rebuild Lives. They help Long Island’s economically-disadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence. Their services may include plumbing and electrical repairs, weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, restoring heat and hot water, back and front yard clean-up, constructing wheelchair ramps, installing grab bars and so much more. It was a role reversal at Seaford High School, as 19 students got to play the parts of teachers and administrators in late May. The student council sold raffle tickets for its first adopt-a-teacher fundraiser, and the winners got to spend a day as an educator. Each of the 16 participating teachers relinquished his or her role for one day in the week leading up to Memorial Day. On May 31, three students took on the part of the principal and assistant principals.
Some students implemented the lesson plans of the teachers they were replacing, while others helped create an instructional plan for the day. Anthony Pace, who worked with history teacher Lindsay Garncarz, said he gained an appreciation for the work that goes into creating a lesson. Junior Paige Donovan, who took over for Spanish teacher Patricia Foley, led students in a game of Hangman in which the answers were famous people from Spanish-speaking countries in the Caribbean. Danielle Mascolo said she tried

to mimic the mannerisms of psychology teacher Thomas Fioriglio. “It was a great experience because I want to be a teacher,” said junior Emily Schiller, who took over for health and physical education teacher Kathryn Hoernig. “It was an eye opener to see the classroom experience from that perspective.” Senior Eric Schneider won the raffle to step into the shoes of Principal Scott Bersin for the day, with junior Jessica Kofod and sophomore Robert Consiglio shadowing Assistant Principals Nicole Schnabel and Jennifer Bisulca, respectively. They had to come to school about 20 minutes earlier, dress professionally and observe classes throughout the day. The three students made the morning announcements, were given a safety document to review, and helped solve a conflict for two events that were scheduled for the same time. Jessica took over the Seaford High School Instagram account for the day, which is typically run by Ms. Schnabel. “What I loved most was going around to all of the different classes, interacting with all of the teachers and getting to see classes that I wouldn’t normally see,” Jessica said. Eric said that one of his main roles that day was reminding students to wear their lanyards with their school IDs. He and Robert added that they gained insight into the behindthe-scenes work that goes into running a school, and the day-to-day demands on building administrators.
