Preserve Clean-Up

he Seaford Wellness Council recently held its 9th Annual Clean-Up of Tackapausha Preserve in conjunction with the American Hiking Society’s 2013 National Trails Day. Joining the Council were the Chamber of Commerce, the Friends of Tackapausha, Seaford H.S. Key Club, Tackapausha Tree People and others. Twenty bags of cans, bottles and other debris were removed.

There wasn’t a dry eye in the room when Seaford High School senior Jessica Adelman was awarded the Patricia Wallace Memorial Scholarship during a small, private ceremony in the guidance office. The $1,000 award recognizes a Nassau County student who has displayed outstanding effort, perseverance and academic achievement despite the challenges of hearing impairment. Mr. James Wallace presented the award, named in memory of his wife, Patricia, who was a Nassau BOCES teacher for the hearing impaired and, for many years, worked with students in their school districts overcome their disabilities and succeed in academics and in life. Impressed by Jessica’s academic record, Wallace said, “There are three reasons why you are so deserving of this scholarship: your ability to achieve a high GPA

Catholic Health Services (CHS) has named Alan D. Guerci, MD, president and chief executive officer (CEO), effective July 1st. He is currently executive vice president for CHS and president and CEO of CHS’s St. Francis Hospital, Mercy Medical Center and St. Joseph Hospital. Dr. Guerci succeeds Richard J.J. Sullivan, Jr., who has been serving as the system’s CEO on a voluntary basis since December 2012, in addition to his ongoing duties as chairman of CHS’s Board of Directors. “Dr. Guerci brings more than 20 years of service to CHS and has established

himself in the Long Island community as a highly respected physician and accomplished health care leader,” said Sullivan. “He is well versed in hospital administration and is focused on Christ’s healing mission and achieving the highest levels of quality with a commitment to excellence and financial stewardship.” Prior to assuming executive leadership for St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center®, in 1999 (and Mercy and St. Joseph more recently), Dr. Guerci - a nationally renowned cardiologist - was St. Francis’s executive vice president for medical affairs and director of research. Previously, he served as director of the Coronary Care Unit at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, as well as chairman of the Clinical Trials Review Committee of the Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health.

At St. Francis, Dr. Guerci oversaw the largest expansion project in the hospital’s history, the first phase of which was completed in 2008 with the opening of the 158,000-square-foot Nancy and Frederick DeMatteis Pavilion. In October of 2012, St. Francis’s newly renovated Emergency Department (ED) was unveiled - the

region’s first “green” ED, featuring electrically operated privacy glass, high-efficiency light fixtures and other innovations to minimize the facility’s “footprint”. After graduating from Harvard College, Dr. Guerci earned his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College and a master’s degree in health care

management from the Harvard School of Public Health. He completed postgraduate training as an intern, resident and chief resident at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in cardiology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he advanced to the rank of associate professor of

medicine before joining St. Francis. In addition, he is an associate professor of clinical medicine at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University. At a young age, Seaford High School Valedictorian Shaina Blitt knew she was destined for success, drawing inspiration from her piano teacher who was also a chemist in a time when few women held such positions. With a weighted grade point average of 102.85, Shaina heads to Northeastern University in Boston with plans of becoming an aerospace engineer. Shaina came to Seaford High School as a sophomore after graduating from the Long Island School for the Gifted in Huntington Station. It was hard to meet students in her grade, she admits,

because she was placed in advanced classes with upperclassmen. “It wasn’t until junior year when I joined Chorale and took Advanced Placement (AP) Language and Composition, which had eleventh graders in it, did I start meeting students in my grade,” she said. During the summers in high school she took classes in engineering, calculus, marine science and astrophysics at Columbia, Harvard and Stanford universities. Because her learning was accelerated and she had completed most of the graduation requirements, Shaina spent the first semester of her senior year in Spain. She lived with a host family and attended a “bachillerato” program, Spain’s specialized postsecondary schooling for students 16-18 year olds. Concentrating in science, she took chemistry, physics, technical drawing and philosophy, which were all taught in Spanish. She was the only American in her classes. While studying in Spain, her

be that wistful, bittersweet sensation that, just last year (and nearly two thirds of my life before that) that used to be me up on stage, decked out in full costume, makeup, hair… the whole deal. (Oh, and glitter. Can’t forget glitter.) As with any transition, it is often met with mixed emotions – that sense of knowing when the time has come to move on, yet sadness that you will be leaving your comfort zone of people and places and things you have grown to expect as part of your life. Time does move on, things do change; and, in the end, you eventually grow used to the sometimes subtle, sometimes drastic alterations

to “life as you know it.” It’s the same with graduations, with changes in residence or job – everything requires a period of adjustment. And then, without realizing it, there comes a day when you take a step back and realize that this has become the new norm. So here’s to that new norm, to sitting in the audience and being able to truly appreciate all the hard work and dedication that has gone into creating the spectacle before me. And if – no, when – I become nostalgic for my own time in the spotlight, I will call upon the 20 years of fond memories I was fortunate to be a part of... and smile.

“Your Gildersleeve is my Roger” the words were barely audible through tears and cries of Roger’s name. After having been missing for more than a year from Lindenhurst and turning up on Route 110 in Amityville, Roger, an almost 11 year-old cat was on his way home thanks to a little good fortune and the help of South Bay’s Neighbor Pet’s Place. Charlene Brass recognized her long lost cat’s photo in the April 16th

issue of the paper the day the Babylon Shelter photo was published. This photo was definitely her cat, Roger, who had disappeared in March 2012. Charlene looked for Roger for months and visited the shelter several times searching for him. Lost pet reunions like this, especially cat reunions, only happen once or twice a year; yet, each time one does, it reminds distraught owners never to give up hope.

family suffered extreme damage to their home due to Superstorm Sandy and moved in with a relative. Her family is currently renting a house on their block from a neighbor who moved to Florida. While her family strives to return to normalcy, Shaina is excited to study engineering at an institution that has given her almost full tuition. In addition to academics, Shaina enjoys reading, traveling, tutoring and trying new things. She is a member of National Honor Society and is an AP Scholar with Distinction for scoring a 3 or better on five or more AP exams. She earned several awards in and out of school, including the President’s Award for Educational Excellence and the Seaford High School Certificate of Academic Excellence in AP Calculus BC. She participated in JV soccer, Key Club, Mathletes and was a peer tutor. Her parting advice to underclassmen: “Always try your hardest and don’t quit.”
