Summer concert season is upon us! I have to admit, I went a little ticket crazy this time around. am of the philosophy that, if you want to do something badly enough, why should you wait for tickets to be sold out and appear on resale sites for triple the price? Spontaneity is key – just press that “purchase” button and worry about minor details like cost and finding a concert companion later! Of course, needless to say, after realizing that I had accumulated tickets to about seven or eight shows over these next several months, I began to panic. Slightly. Trying to remember who likes what types of music, the corresponding dates, times, locations, the cost factor … it’s a bit like being an event planner, desperately trying to fill each slot appropriately. The ultimate

goal, of course, is to not find myself solo the day of the show, contemplating a.) going by myself, b.) attempting to resell the tickets, or c.) worst of all, losing the money laid out and not going at all. A truly lose/lose situation. By the time you read this, I will have attended concert number one (guest confirmed, tickets paid in full), with numbers two and three to follow shortly in the coming week. A bit of overkill, I know. But that’s what summer is all about – enjoying the great outdoors with family and friends, taking in some music, film, culture … whatever the case may be. This is what we look forward to all year. Let’s not forget to savor it now that it’s arrived.

While Ward has taught various grades and abilities at both the Harbor and the Manor schools, she is best known for building the multi-age classroom program from the ground up and driving the program’s success for the past 21 years. hundreds of educators,” In recognition of her outstanding teaching skills, Ward was named Teacher of the Year by the district in the 1980s, was an Honorary Patriot Award winner three years ago and was the recipient of the coveted Viking Helmet, a tradition started five years ago by Superintendent Brian L. Conboy. With her departure the multi-age program will change slightly, catering to first and second graders next year because of curriculum

changes associated with the Common Core Learning Standards that align third grade more with fourth grade. As she contemplates her last days, what she’ll miss the most, she says, are her students, the comradery with colleagues and the parents, who “have been great.” She plans to spend her new-found time enjoying activities such as kayaking, standup paddle boarding and exploring nature. She also intends to volunteer for causes that are dear to her, such as wildlife

conservation. When asked what people don’t know about her, Ward paused and said, I’m really an open book. Her multi-age colleague and longtime friend, Nancy Kempner, spoke about Ward’s charitable efforts, such as adopting an elephant family through the Elephant Listening Project or goats for families through Heifer International. “She’s the most caring and charitable person,” Kempner said. “She’s the best teacher ever, ever, ever.”

Louisville, KY this June. Jack Shea, a Barry Tech plumbing student from the Lynbrook UFSD, was elected Area VI Vice President; Michenka Juin, a Barry Tech nurse assisting student form the Baldwin UFSD, was named State Historian; and Leeann Turrisi, a Barry Tech veterinary science

student from the East Meadow UFSD, will serve as a National Delegate for New York State. As National Officers, these three students will attend a number of training sessions that will prepare them to serve as members of the National Officer Team at the June conference. Following

the nationals, Jack Shea and Michenka Juin will have additional training opportunities including summer sessions and attendance at the September Washington Leadership Conference. The national competition is the culmination of a series of events that SkillsUSA

sponsors as part of its mission to provide our country with a competitive, skilled workforce. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry leaders working together to prepare high school and college students to become leaders in the business world. The
