A Free Humanities Enrichment Workshop For Middle School Students It’s often said that some of the best ideas are born of necessity and that’s certainly the case with “Camp Color: Summer HumanitiesEnrichment for Middle School Students.” The plan began to gel when teachers Nadine Palumbo and Anthony Vittorino were discussing the detrimental effects of social distancing guidelines, hybrid learning, and a loss of extracurricular activities. “We each witnessed formerly engaged students shutting down and checking out emotionally by turning off their cameras screens and becoming passive,” said Palumbo, adding that “Countless family friends have also addressed concerns about their children’s ‘pandemic slide’ and feelings of depression.” They started testing out different formats, such as a distance-learning talk show to interview artists and authors about their creative process during the pandemic, but that seemed better suited only for high school level remote learning. Native plants are traditionally found in a local region, where they are adapted to the local climate and soil conditions. Building on the incredible popularity and success of similar programs last summer and this past winter, Supervisor Don Clavin and the Hempstead Town Board are announcing the muchanticipated sequel: “The Return of Free Drive-In Movies!” Town Park Point Lookout will screen movies on a giant LED screen, and residents can watch from the comfort of their own vehicles. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm www.hobbsfarm.info

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. You may know and love their farm, or you may never believe there is an 11-acre farm in Centereach that has been feeding Long Islanders for decades! The James Hobbs family came to Long Island from Georgia in 1906 and grew farm produce in New Village (North Centereach) for local Long Islanders for 3 generations, first as farm workers and later purchasing the land, which became known as Hobbs Farm. James’ son, Alfred Hobbs took ownership in 1955 and farmed his own property, as well as rental farmland in the surrounding area for many years. He passed up many opportunities to sell the property, hoping that it would always remain a farm. Thankfully, it does remain a farm to this day. Hobbs Farm is the last farm in Centereach, as well as the last AfricanAmerican family farm on Long Island. When Mr. Hobbs passed away in 1996, he left the farm property to the Bethel AME Church in Setauket, where he was a member. The farm was renamed Bethel Hobbs Community Farm. However, the church struggled with local community organizations that were threatening to buyout the land for other means. In 2007, “Friends of Hobbs Farm” was formed, which led to the restoration process of the farm. Today, the church still owns the farm, a non-profit organization that is entirely operated by volunteers. The farm is 11 acres and it grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to several local food pantries and soup kitchens on the island. They also offer CSA Memberships, which allows locals to receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown on their farm right in Centereach. The produced is packed the same day as they go out for delivery, and recipients can rest knowing exactly where they were grown. Additionally, the farm offers educational programs, community events and they have a seasonal farm stand. Currently, this farm has various upcoming community events planned! On June 13th and September 12th, they will

be holding a Line Dance event on the farm itself. For only $25/person, you can join Skip and the Country Rhythms Team for a fun afternoon of dancing, food and a raffle. All dances will be taught; you can arrive as early as 1:30 PM and dancing starts at 2 PM. Additionally, anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at their farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM starting June 12th running through October 10th! You will find organically-grown produce and every purchase made will support the farm and it’s mission. Looking to show your support in another way? Volunteers are needed! Depending on the season, Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has a variety of farm work that volunteers can assist with, such as planting, weeding, harvesting, working in the greenhouse and property maintenance. Individuals and groups are able to volunteer at the farm and community service hours can be given. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit their website and fill out their Volunteer Waiver Form and the contact the farm directly at 631.774.1556 to find out when you can start! Due to the pandemic, volunteers must bring a pair of gloves. Additionally, they suggest volunteers bring sunscreen and any food or drink they may need. To help hospitals meet the ongoing and pressing need for blood, Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson and Town Councilman Tom Hand invite residents to attend a Blood Collection Drive on Monday, June 21st from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville. Councilwoman Johnson stated, “Residents can save lives by donating blood this June at the Hicksville Athletic Center. Blood supplies have seriously dwindled as a result of the COVID-19 health pandemic and are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives. Please consider participating in this blood

drive on June 21st.” Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. Social distancing and sanitary protocols will be in place to maintain the health and safety of all donors. To qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that donors eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. Additionally, all donors will receive a voucher for a free Blizzard at Dairy

The Saturday night concert series, sponsored by Jovia Financial Credit Union and presented by GnR Events, is part of the County’s free summer entertainment series which features dozens of free outdoor concerts, movies, and special events being held at parks across the County. “Nassau’s robust vaccination program has been key to reopening our County and we are all looking forward to going back to the activities we enjoy. I am proud to announce that summer is back in Nassau starting with a full slate of events including concerts and movies for all ages to enjoy. Seaford SADD Signs On To Student Safety “Be Safe. Be Smart. Be Seaford.” It’s the short but impactful message on a new sign outside of Seaford High School, a reminder from the Students Against Destructive Decisions club about the importance of making good choices. The club, under the direction of advisers Chelsea Emerman and Mary Lang, began planning for the new sign about two years ago. Fundraising was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but eventually SADD was able to resume its efforts earlier

this year by selling Seaford Pride gear. The new sign is in front of the school and alongside the driveway to the main parking lot, so almost every student sees it on his or her way into school. The design includes a red ribbon, which is the symbol for drug-abuse prevention, topped with a Viking hat. A green wave through the sign pays to homage to Seaford’s primary color as well as its location on the South Shore. SADD club members noted that health and

wellness is a priority throughout the Seaford community, and they wanted to do their part to spread the message. They noted that they wanted a sign with a more encompassing message than the older “Live Life Drug Free” sign it replaced.
