Gaining STEAM imaginations by tinkering, creating, collaborating, using trial and error, problem-solving, and more. Engaged and excited, students from Michelle Wojcik’s fifth-grade class, who were already introduced to Bloxels in their classroom, assisted their peers from other fifth-grade classes during a STEAM lunch session, which the Harbor School has been hosting throughout the school year. “It’s cool because we get to build our own characters and scenes and get to play with what we made,” said fifth-grader Sophia Sarli. She was assisted by her peer, Morgan Wagner, who said of her role, “It’s fun to help other kids.” “It’s cool; I want it,” said fifth-grader John
McCormick. “Parts of it are challenging, but it’s really fun,” added classmate Brady McGowan. Grace St. Pierre, who assisted the two, said she loved the idea of helping her classmates and seeing how they pick it up.” Ten Bloxel kits, as well as two Dash and Dot Robots, used to learn computer coding, and one storage unit for Makerspace materials were donated to the school by the Seaford Wellness Council. “We are thankful to the Seaford Wellness Council for their generous donation to our Makerspace and for the opportunity to have our students engaged in new activities that get them excited to learn in a fun and collaborative way,” said Tom Burke, principal of Seaford Harbor Elementary School.
Gathered in the library, fifth-graders at Seaford Manor Elementary School learned some new facts about government and eagerly answered questions during a presentation from New York State Assemblyman David
McDonough of the 14th district. A s s e m b l y m a n McDonough discussed the levels and branches of government, the names of local and state officials, how a bill becomes a law and the importance of laws
in our society. After posing for a group photo with the assemblyman, students received packets with information about New York’s seal, flag etiquette, bicycle safety and how a bill becomes a law.

Building their skills in design logic and computer science, students first unleashed their creativity by developing a video game character using the colored blocks and board. They then took a picture of their character and inserted it into the video game screen using the app. From there, using their knowledge of history, science and math, they were able to manipulate their video game into something that is uniquely theirs. A Time to Remember

My alma mater, Lindy High School, recently held its senior prom last week, bringing to mind my own end-of-year soirees which took place so many years ago. Our senior prom was, of course, a highlight; even more so for the fact that it was held at the top of the World Trade Center, at the one and only Windows on the World. What a magical night it was, and what an unforgettable time we had celebrating among the clouds, overlooking the greatest city in the world. Often forgotten in the recollections of high school, however, was the equally memorable evening we had at our junior prom. Held at the famed Narragansett Inn, it brought the elegance of our first “real” dance to our hometown, complete with swirling gowns and high heels, and hair and makeup appointments for all on the afternoon of the big event. Remember, at this point,
sweet sixteen’s had yet to take on the extravagance of a small wedding, and proms truly were the formal affairs of the age. Everything down to the smallest detail was coordinated, from corsage colors to jewelry and accessories, to the tiny flowers and rhinestone clips which adorned many of the girls’ hair. The class voted on their pick for “Junior Prom Song” in the weeks leading up to the event, forgoing the more current hits for a classic from Long Island’s own Billy Joel, “This is the Time.” I remember taking pictures beforehand at my grandparents’ house, walking down the big staircase and masquerading in all sorts of corny poses for the camera. This, of course, predated the advent of cell phones and the notorious “selfies” of today; but every single collection of friends had the same standard photo in front of their limo, couples angled inward, corsages on display.
There was something elegant in the simplicity. Junior prom was a bit more casual for our group. Instead of a limo, we carpooled. Instead of any post-prom festivities, we stopped off at McDonald’s on the way home – in the excitement of the evening, it seems no one had really taken the time to sit down and eat. We were too busy taking photos by the grand piano in the lobby, cheering on the prom court…and dancing, of course. I remember coming home that night and sitting up for hours, recollecting every last detail of the evening to my parents, still in my gown and high heels, my hair a little disheveled but none the worse for wear, not wanting the day to end. Sure, senior prom may have had the pomp and circumstance and the expectation of great things; but junior prom, for me, far exceeded all that. It was, truly the time to remember.

Six students from Nassau BOCES Barry Tech took top honors at the New York State SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Championships, held in Syracuse earlier this spring. Students participated in a series of timed events related to their courses of study at Barry Tech, as well as in competitions in leadership and professional development. Barry Tech boasts two
first-place winners in the Actions Skills category. They are Veterinary Science students Victoria Baltrus (North Shore CSD) and Samantha Miller (East Meadow UFSD). Students who earn first place at the state conference have the opportunity to move on to the National Leadership and Skills Conference in Louisville, KY this June. Taking second place in the American Spirit competition were Medical

Leaving a Legacy time job. Four years later, he retired from his full-time position and continued as a part-time AD. Under his 13year leadership, Seaford’s teams have had unprecedented success and have proven to be among the most competitive in Nassau County by winning two Long Island championships, 18 county championships and more than 50 conference championships. “All in all,” he said, “ I’ve had a kind of an unusual transition from social studies teacher, guidance, drive ed, principal to AD, but I gained a real perspective and appreciation for different points of view. I really gained an insight from coaching and my other positions on the impact that athletics could have on young peoples’ lives and how students who became involved in athletics become more motivated in school,” he said. “In
guidance, you take a more holistic approach, not only their academic but their social-emotional well-being, so quite often a student who wasn’t involved but then became involved in athletics would thrive.” To say that Condon has left an indelible mark at Seaford High School would be an understatement. Condon has taken the wisdom he has learned as a varsity football and track coach, the whole-child perspective he advocated as a longtime guidance counselor and his penchant for history as a social studies teacher and produced some of the most lasting and memorable ways to honor alumni and staff, and to motivate and inspire future generations of students. Among his accomplishments, he’s refurbished and updated the Coaches Hall of Fame, the Viking Wall of Fame and the Vietnam memorial above the gymnasium
doors. He initiated the Honored Athletes display for outstanding student athletes who deserved recognition but were not inducted into the Viking Wall of Fame. He, along with the Booster Club, has coordinated memorable Homecoming festivities that are steeped in Seaford tradition, community spirit and excitement for athletics. And, he has spearheaded the construction of one of the most beautiful and extensive 9/11 memorials ever constructed on school grounds. Five of his athletes perished that day, and he knew he had to honor their memory in some way. With the help of the community and the victim’s families, the 9/11 SHS Memorial Committee was formed, which has worked tirelessly to raise funds for the development of the memorial, its maintenance and for scholarships that are given to five deserving graduating seniors each year at commencement. The memorial was built after the committee convinced the school board that it would serve as an educational tool, and each year the high school social studies teachers visit the memorial with their classes and teach students about one of the greatest tragedies to take place on American soil. The 9/11 plaza features a large stone patio and circular bench large enough for a class of students to sit. Five brass scrolls honor each Seaford High School alumnus that perished. To the right of the scrolls are the latest additions, pieces of steel from the World Trade Center and a large marble slab with an American flag with the words “Always Remember” etched in it. As a finishing touch, special smooth black rocks were added around the large marble flag and “when it is lit, it looks like the flag is rising from the ashes,” Condon said. Each year, on 9/11, the memorial ceremony draws about 1,500 people. Condon said he will continue to work on the 9/11 SHS Memorial Committee, but as far as his other plans after retirement, he recalls what his father said to him over 50 years ago when he had to pay his college tuition bill, “You’ll figure it out.” Condon added, “I am most proud that during my career I have made a difference in the lives of so many in the Seaford family and I am so grateful to all those who have made a difference in my life.” Condon resides in Massapequa with his wife, Peggy. They have three children, Erin, Maureen and Ryan and two grandchildren, Bella and Christian.

Who would have thought that a trip to a local supermarket to buy eggs for his mother would lead to the beginning of a 48-year career at Seaford High School? But that’s what happened to Seaford Athletic Director Tom Condon, who after a long multi-faceted career, is preparing to retire June 30th. The year was 1969. He had just completed student teaching a tenth-grade social studies class and was soon to graduate from St. John’s University. Overhearing two teenage stock boys say their social studies teacher had just been fired, Condon quickly left the store and called Seaford High School to set up an interview. He got the job and that started a journey of a lifetime. Since then, Condon has worn several hats. In addition to being a social studies teacher, he became certified as a guidance counselor and taught driver’s education. Some years he changed positions, based on the needs of the school, and other years he took them on simultaneously. For 36 years, he coached varsity football and track - sports he played as a student at Chaminade High School but put on hold as he worked through college to pay his tuition bills. After earning administrative certifications, he was recognized for his organizational management skills, and in his early 30s, with a young family at home, he was asked to take on the responsibility of Seaford High School principal. “I learned a big lesson from that position and being in charge of the entire faculty. Listening to people, making them feel that they have ownership and having influence on the direction an organization can take were major lessons in accomplishing what I did as principal, and later on what I was able to accomplish in this position as Athletic Director,” he said. Throughout his career, he has taught, guided and coached countless numbers of students, impacting their lives in ways that hold true to this day. He knew the families of his athletes, had dinner at their houses and was a role model for those who didn’t have one. He recalled speaking to students years after they graduated to thank him for his support and even attributing their chosen careers to his guidance. In 2004, after many years as a guidance counselor, Condon took on the part-time position of Athletic Director, while still coaching and maintaining his full-
