While speaking with Robyn, she shared a great story about a routine visit with her dental hygienist, Sue. Sue was explaining how arthritis was really becoming a problem in her hands. After a short discussion with Sue, Robyn challenged her to cut out all dairy for a month. After only a few days Sue called Robyn to share she was already having less pain and was now fully committed to making it through the dairy-free month. Through the month Sue made a few appointments with Robyn and made a few other small changes to her diet. Not long after that first month Sue’s arthritic pains were gone, she lost 30 pounds, reduced her bad cholesterol and her blood pressure normalized. All welcomed benefits but completely unexpected by Sue, although Robyn

The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org
New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. This organization began all from the vision of an educator that was committed to providing a safe haven for those living in poverty. This educator saw that shelters were only providing a short-term fix to a problem that needed a real, lasting solution. After envisioning an organization that provided a holistic suite of support services while empowering participants to help themselves, she founded New Ground in 1991 to do just that.

New Ground, based in Levittown, offers Veterans and families the following main programs to truly help them conquer homelessness: their Long Term Housing Program, their JumpStart Program and their Veterans Program. Their services include Adult Workshops, Career Development, Education Advocacy, Education Assistance, Financial Literacy, Reading All-Stars, Special Memories and Tutoring. Their Long Term Housing Program combines affordable housing with New Ground’s intensive services. Currently this includes a home in Huntington with two homeless Veteran families, a home in Bethpage under renovations and plans to add more housing units. For 3-5 years, New Ground provides all the needed educational, vocational and counseling services to the family members living in this housing, as well as basic needs and general support. Residents also take time with a social worker and put together a plan of how they can reach their goals. All residents pay an affordable rent and although New Ground assists them with various costs and hurdles they may face, they truly get the feeling of being a responsible homeowner. New Ground’s JumpStart Program launched in 2012 to expand these critical services to additional homeless families on their wait-list for the Long Term Housing Program. This Program is open to any homeless families, not just Veterans, and is intended to give families a jump-start on accomplishing their goals. When these families later transition into the Long Term Housing Program, they are well on their way toward realizing the steps needed to secure an independent future. A primary social worker is assigned to all families in both of these programs once they start with the organization. New Ground social
workers provide guidance, resources and assistance to the families in various areas. The New Ground Veterans Program is another very important part to their organization. Homeless Veterans can get placed in reduced cost housing and be provided with intensive social work and education services by New Ground to assist them with achieving goals in the areas of employment, financial literacy, education, career development, parenting, basic life skills, education advocacy and more. In 2016 their services were expanded so they can serve an even greater number of Veteran households. Through collaboration with the Northport VA Center, New Ground began offering their programs to over 400 homeless Veteran households in their Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing Program. Since opening their doors, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and into permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. Shirts Say It All The question, “Where are you going to college next year?” wasn’t asked much at Seaford High School on May 1. That’s because everyone’s shirt had the answer on College Awareness Day. Members of the Class of 2019 marked the
end of the long college decision process by wearing attire that showcased their future plans. This year’s senior class will be heading to more than 50 colleges and universities on Long Island, in the city, upstate New York and throughout the country.
College Awareness Day is an annual tradition each May. Teachers and staff members were also encouraged to wear shirts representing the schools from which they earned degrees, sparking many conversations throughout the day.

Two Seaford High School students were recognized for the shutterbug skills by the Photographic Society of America. Juniors Emily Espinel and Leila Fatscher will have their work displayed in the Youth Showcase at the organization’s 81st annual conference in Spokane, Washington in September. Both are students in Melinda DiGiovanna’s professional photography class. Their photo submissions came from their art portfolios, which are used for their Advanced Placement scores. Emily’s portfolio concentration is mirrors and reflections. The photo that will be displayed at the PSA conference is a
reflection of her friend at the beach in a circular frameless mirror that she stuck in the sand. She received honorable mention for this black and white photograph in the monochrome category and her piece is featured on the PSA website. A trip to Disney in middle school inspired Emily to get into photography, who upon returning from the trip wanted to get a camera just like the professional park photographers. She has been snapping away ever since. Leila’s color image of her uncle’s cat, from her portfolio which concentrated on portrait photography, will be displayed at the Youth
Showcase. “I was happy that my work was selected,” she said. “I really like taking pictures of people and animals.” Both students are active photographers in Seaford, capturing school and community events. Emily has done pictures for the Best Buddies track meet, the Sept. 11 remembrance ceremony and a local Easter egg hunt, and Leila photographed seniors on college awareness day. Ms. DiGiovanna said the fact that these two students were selected to have their work displayed at a national conference “speaks to the skill and talent they have.”

Special Guests At Manor Grandparents got a look at education in 2019, as they visited Seaford Manor Elementary School on May 10 for Special Persons Day. The annual event included musical presentations and classroom activities. Kindergartners, first and second graders welcomed their special guests in the morning, while grandparents of third, fourth and fifth graders visited in the afternoon. Each session began with a presentation
that included a principal’s welcome, video, jugglers, performance of the National Anthem by the advanced band and student songs. Student teacher Anna Paulik taught children the “I Love You” song from “Barney” in sign language, which they performed. Guests then spent some time with their grandchildren for different activities. Kindergartners and their grandparents played bingo, but instead
of numbers, they marked off the squares of different activities they have done together. It was an opportunity to spark discussions about those special memories. Among other activities, first graders made small planters for their grandparents, second grade classrooms had patriotic sing alongs, and fifth graders and their visitors worked together to complete a STEAM challenge.
Wall Street Wizards Seaford Middle School sixth graders Sofia Bolen and Olivia Irwin took first place in the Stock Market Game, hosted by the SIFMA Foundation, this spring. The girls competed against more than 250 middle school teams. In
the online Stock Market Game, teams were given $100,000 of virtual dollars to invest in stocks, bonds and mutual funds. The simulation required students to research the companies they selected as investment choices and monitor their finances,
deciding to sell or buy particular stocks as they tracked trends. Sofia and Olivia made of a profit of more than $13,000. The girls were joined by their Smart Money teacher, Adam Cohen, at an awards ceremony at Hofstra University.

Eighty guest speakers representing dozens of professions volunteered their time to impart wisdom upon Seaford Middle School eighth graders on May 16. The school hosted its annual Career Day, a program designed to help students begin planning for their futures and guide their high school course selections. Coordinator Carin Hoy said that most of the presenters were parents and community members. She explained that many return year after year, even after their children have left the school, because they enjoy the opportunity to talk about their careers and interact with the students. “Everybody does something different and there are so many different
fields here,” she said. “It shows the students how many options there are for their futures.” Ms. Hoy said that Career Day is a great example of school, family and community coming together for a good cause. She added that the program is catered to the students’ interests, as they select the speakers they want to hear from. The eighth graders come prepared with questions and dress as if they were attending job interviews. Grace Romano learned about veterinary medicine, law enforcement, fashion and entertainment. She said the best advice she received was that she should incorporate her own interests and passions into her career, because she will be doing that for a
Geniuses At Work long time. “This helped me figure out a path to focus on,” she said, adding that she is thinking about becoming a veterinarian. Stephen Ierides heard from presenters in multiple fields including education, library science, sports, fashion, film and DJing. He said he got both good career and life advice, such as the importance of doing well in school and staying in shape. The best part of the day, he said, was hearing the presenters share their stories about their career paths. “I think the day was very worthwhile,” he said. “I learned that you should strive for your dreams and never give up on a career you wanted to have as a child.”
Fourth graders are stewards of their own learning at Seaford Harbor Elementary School. Teacher Samantha Micciche has introduced the genius hour concept to her classroom, in which time is devoted each day to projects her students have selected. Genius hour was introduced in early May, with each student selecting a topic to learn more about. They could work independently or in pairs, and the process began with extensive research. Students learned different ways to gather information by reading books, using online sources and interviewing experts. Once their research was done, students
began creating their presentations. They had the choice of making a physical project like a poster display or a digital project such as a PowerPoint slideshow. All decisions, from the content to the presentation format, were left up to the students. “Genius hour gives them an opportunity to become leaders of their own learning,” Ms. Micciche said. “They really enjoyed it because they were researching what they were passionate about.” Among the topics that students chose were cars, cheerleading, p a l e o n t o l o g y, photography, singing and video games. Students said they really

enjoyed the opportunity to direct their own learning. Emma Venus chose to learn about Alex Morgan, a decorated soccer player she has watched for years. C.J. Romain, who visits Tennessee every year, researched the top 25 places to go there. Both students chose to do digital presentations because they liked the different visual effects offered in PowerPoint. “I think it’s cool because you get an hour to learn more about what you’re really passionate about,” C.J. said. “I like learning on my own because it gets me ready for the future, like in high school when you get to choose your classes.”

Seaford High School junior Pablo Hashem recently received the Rensselaer Medal Award for his outstanding academic achievement in math and science from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He was nominated by his guidance counselor, Suzanne Cosenza. The award, which
has been presented annually since 1916, honors promising high school students who have distinguished themselves in those two subject areas. Pablo began taking high school-level math and science courses in eighth grade. This year he is enrolled in pre-calculus and Advanced Placement
chemistry, and as a senior, he plans to take AP calculus and AP physics. As a Rensselaer Medal recipient, Pablo would receive a scholarship valued at up to $25,000 per year if he is accepted into and enrolls at RPI. He is interested in pursuing a career in engineering.

It’s Never Too Late To Achieve A Healthy Weight (NAPSI)—People often think of the New Year as a time to set new goals for healthy eating and physical activity. But weight management requires ongoing effort, during the holidays and every day. That’s why the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), part of the National Institutes of Health, is promoting simple tips and tools to help Americans start and maintain healthy habits. “Why wait to start improving your health when you can start today?” NIDDK Director Dr. Griffin P. Rodgers said in a statement. “It’s never too soon or too late to achieve a healthy weight.” Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight through healthy food choices and regular physical activity may help lower the risk of developing health problems associated with obesity, such as heart disease, kidney disease and Type 2 diabetes. About 40 percent of adults and 19 percent of children and teens in the United States have obesity, according to recent data from the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention. Continue or establish healthier eating habits, such as reducing the overall calories you consume and limiting your intake of foods and beverages with added sugars, fats and salt. Bringing healthier versions of your favorite dishes to holiday gatherings, and choosing smaller portions of holiday treats and alcohol, may help with managing weight during this time of year. The NIDDK recommends making physical activity a priority for the whole family. Choosing a set time for physical activity and sticking to it may help you manage stress, improve your mood, and give you the energy to tackle your busy schedule. If it’s too cold to walk or run outdoors, take your workout to your favorite mall or indoor sports field. Even if you’re pressed for time, doing some physical activity is better than skipping your workout and doing nothing. Another tip to consider during the holiday season and every day to improve health and manage weight is to reduce screen time and time spent sitting. Watching TV for more than two hours
a day has been linked to overweight and obesity. Try creating a holiday-themed playlist and having a dance party. You can have fun dancing alone or with family or friends. To further encourage adults and youth to be active, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also recently released new Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. The new Guidelines recommend that adults aim for at least 150 minutes of moderateintensity activity each week, such as brisk walking or dancing. Youth ages six through 17 need one hour each day, and children ages three through six should be active throughout the day. By establishing and sticking to healthy habits, parents, caregivers and youth may achieve better health together during the holiday season and beyond.
