After planting the flags, both units went to the World War I Memorial near the Seaford Train Station. There, they cleaned up the memorial and planted flowers. Thanks to all the Troops for their dedicated efforts in commemorating our soldiers.

When it comes to both children and automobiles, driving home the message of safety is of utmost importance. Supervisor Kate Murray and the Hempstead Town Board are doing just that, announcing the start of the town’s 2014 Child Car Seat Safety Inspection Program, which will be visiting communities across the Town of Hempstead to help residents inspect the installation of their car seats, free of charge. “With warmer weather on the horizon, parents will be driving their young children to and from many exciting activities,” stated Murray. “Now is the perfect time for Town of Hempstead residents to ensure that their children are properly secured in safety seats, and we are proud to offer the lifesaving Child Car Seat Safety Program at no cost.”
This program is led by the town’s certified child passenger safety technicians, who have been trained by Safe Kids Worldwide, a global organization that seeks to prevent accidents and injuries to young
children. Residents can have their child safety seat inspected and, if necessary, technicians will make adjustments. The following is a listing of car seat safety

Fixing The System By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There is a video making its rounds on the social media circuit, showcasing what can only be described as the sorry state of our education system. One after another, various beachgoers were interviewed on the shores of our very own Jones Beach over this past Memorial Day weekend, asked questions ranging from “Who did we fight in the Revolutionary War?” to “What side of the Civil War was Abraham Lincoln associated with?” to “What country attacked us at Pearl Harbor?” The answers? Some of the best gems were “France” (our opponents in the War for Independence), “The South” (50/50 shot, people) and every nation from “China” to “Russia” to “Korea” to, you
guessed it, “France.” So much for the “date which will live in infamy,” right? And all this was to determine who, if anyone, could explain why we began commemorating Memorial Day in the first place. Judging by the aforementioned answers, not too many history buffs among us. The best part was that most, if not all, of the interviewees were clearly high school or college age, leading to the question: what exactly are they learning in school these days? Sure, I can’t tell you the details of every historical event which occurred over the course of the last several centuries, but the basics? Those are pretty hard to forget. And when I was actually in school, studying for exams every other week and writing term papers on such topics? It would have been difficult not to retain at least something, anything.
It’s a sad state of affairs when you are blissfully ignorant of your own nation’s battle for independence and how you came to enjoy such freedoms as frolicking on the beach on a “holiday” weekend, having no clue how such occasion came into fruition. Sure it’s funny and entertaining to watch as you’re scrolling through the Facebook newsfeed; but when you take a step back and realize that these are the people with whom you coexist on a daily basis, some from your own generation, it becomes pretty disconcerting. I wonder how many of these individuals grabbed their smartphones and Googled the answers following their failed interviews. For those keeping score at home: 1.) Britain, 2.) North and 3.) Japan. They may want to grab a history book and fill in the rest.

Two-hundred girls and families from 34 states, Canada and England will be in attendance as Curvy Girls Scoliosis Support hold their second biannual Convention on June 29th- July 1st on Long Island. Founded in 2006 by then-13 yearold Smithtown, resident Leah Stoltz, Curvy Girls has successfully engaged hundreds of young girls and families in mutual support and advocacy activities through the experience of scoliosis. Scoliosis is the lateral bending and twisting of the spine that, when progressed, causes body deformities and compromises internal organs. It affects seven million people in the U.S. with a diagnosis most commonly occurring in pre-adolescence. The disease shows progression ten times more frequently in girls than boys. Curvy Girls groups provide peerto-peer and family-to-family support and information. Now 21 and graduating from American University with a degree in business and marketing, Leah helped her group to go global after

Bidding Farewell
It’s a seemingly typical morning at Seaford Harbor Elementary School as Assistant Principal Pat Gelling greets students at the door. Suddenly, a group of young girls race up to her, upset over an incident that just took place outside. Gelling gently cups the hand of a young girl who is in the midst of tears and brings her to her office. Within minutes the problem is resolved and Gelling, unfazed, moves on to the next task, leading a group of students in the pledge over the PA system. After
a host of announcements and birthday wishes, she settles into her office and smiles. “There is no typical day for me; you have to go with the flow,” she said. “There’s a lot of scheduling, a lot of changes that take place throughout the day; I am involved with a lot of students, teachers, and parents; conduct a lot of classroom observations, participate in a lot of meetings, oversee testing…” The list goes on. Gelling said she never expected to stay in Seaford when she and her husband,
Gil, bought their “starter” house in 1977, but “the sense of community and the dedication of teachers, administration and people really draw you in and it gets into your blood.” Now, after serving the Seaford School District for 20 years, seven of them as Assistant Principal at the elementary level, it’s almost impossible to imagine the Harbor and Manor elementary schools without her. Gelling will retire at the end of June. As she reflects on her career and the bittersweet departure, she said, “What I’m going to miss the most is the connection with the students and the families.” Gelling first entered the teaching profession after raising her own children, Michael, Brian and Sara, now in their 30s with kids of their own or on the way. During those years, she was heavily involved in PTA, working on many committees and serving as treasurer, then president of the Manor PTA. An avid reader, Gelling said she was intrigued by how her own children learned to read and was inspired to pursue
a career in education to help all learning types. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in elementary and special education from Molloy College and a master’s in literacy from Hofstra University. She also earned an administrative degree from Stony Brook University and a Reading Recovery Certificate from New York University. She is a member of the International Reading Association and the Reading Recovery Council of North America. After teaching reading in the district for 12 years, she became the Reading Chairperson in 2000 and led the summer reading program for several years. Her proudest achievement, she said, is the impact the literacy program has had on students. “We brought in the guided reading program about 10 years ago, followed by the Balanced Literacy Program. Assistant Superintendent John Striffolino and I co-chair the reading department and work with the reading teachers to implement RtI
(Response to Intervention). I also work with Manor Principal Debra Emmerich and Harbor Principal Donna DeLucia-Troisi to guide teachers as they work with the new domains and modules of the common core,” she said. “Seaford has always been on the cutting edge of many ideas in curricula and always had wonderful teachers that get on board and work hard to carry out those ideas.” Her biggest strength, she says, is that teachers trust her leadership. “They come to me and we have lots of collegial discussions and we both grow from that as we work on ideas together.” Her biggest weakness, she says is that there just isn’t enough time in the day to do everything she wants to do at a level that meets her expectations. “There’s a running joke among my colleagues that I am always moving so fast, always multi-tasking, that I’m either spilling things or dropping things,” she laughed. She doesn’t expect to slow down in retirement, either. She plans to explore
volunteer opportunities, do a lot of walking and touring, enjoy her family and grandchildren, play mahjong with a group of old friends, and, of course, read. Before she departs, she will receive the Patriot Award, bestowed upon outstanding Seaford residents who have demonstrated exemplary service to the Seaford schools and community. The American Legion also honored her as Educator of the Year. While she has dedicated herself to the district, she says she has been rewarded many times over by the students entrusted in her care. Her advice to her successor: “Always put the kids first. Children are people; treat them with fairness and respect. Understand that everyone can learn, but they learn at difference paces; they are all going to get there.” To her colleagues and the community: “Appreciate Seaford for all it has to offer. Enjoy your time here because, boy, does it go fast!”

Preserve Cleanup
On Saturday, May 17th, eleven members from the world-renowned Boy Scout Troop, Troop 690 of Seaford (St. William the Abbott RC Church sponsor) gave their time, effort and sweat to clean up a good swath of Tackapausha Preserve.
From Clark Street to Boston Street, the boys bagged litter along the tranquil walking trails. After a quick break, the boys worked their way back down to Clark Street while cleaning the outer periphery of the preserve

Scouting Effort Pack and Troop 239 combined efforts this weekend to plant flags at the LI National Cemetery in Farmingdale this Memorial Day Weekend. After planting the flags, both units went to the World War I Memorial near the Seaford Train Station. There, they cleaned up
the memorial and planted flowers. On Memorial Day, the boys all marched in Seaford’s parade down Washington Avenue to the Seaford Middle School Four Chaplains memorial. There was a short ceremony there that was attended by several organizations and
citizens of Seaford. equipment, safety standards, federal, state & local regulations, aids to navigation, navigation rules, emergencies and marine radiotelephone. The course is approved by New York State to fulfill the requirement for formal training to operate Personal Water Craft (PWC). Youngsters 18 years of age and younger are welcome in order to fulfill the New York State Boating Education requirements, but must be accompanied by an adult.
