The Boy Scouts went out to LI National Cemetery early Saturday morning to plant flags on the graves of our servicemen and women. The Seaford Harbor Elementary School Helping Hands Club came together for one of the most enjoyable events of the school year - an afternoon of laughter, ice cream and games, games, games! The club, unique to the Seaford Harbor School, was formed about five years ago as a club similar

to “Big Brother, Big Sister,” according to Principal Donna DeLucia–Troisi. “The club is a way for students who may be going through difficult personal situations, such as a loss or illness, to bond with a positive role model in their lives,” she said. The children are buddied with a staff member in the school and are seen

weekly by their buddy for lunch or for a play date. The group participates in four events each year: a bagel breakfast, an ice cream sundae and games day, a physical education game day, and an end-ofyear bowling party. Building Character Seaford Harbor Elementary School students got a first-hand lesson on building good character by one of the most famous clowns around - Ronald McDonald, the mascot for the largest fast-food chain in America. The famous clown’s presentation, called “On the Inside,” developed in partnership the

Time. It’s the one thing we never seem to have quite enough of. There is always a deadline, a constant reminder of what we have yet to accomplish within a given period. From the moment we are born, there is a schedule to follow, a time frame to adhere to, expectations to be met – rarely a moment of peace. From classroom bell schedules and term paper due dates to newspaper and magazine press schedules, my life has pretty much been one giant revolving deadline from kindergarten on

up. And, while generally on time for such things, my reluctance to be a “morning person,” coupled with a (slightly) over-the-top sense of perfectionism, occasionally creates obstacles, self-imposed as they may be. Sometimes, you just need to take a collective deep breath and let things go. Choose your battles wisely; smile and accept the rest. It’s not giving up. It’s not even giving in. It’s simply making a conscious decision to rise above with an eye on the greater goal, whatever that may be. It’s not always easy. And

for those like me who tend to micromanage and overanalyze, it can be nearly impossible to let go and relinquish control of the day-today monotonies which, together, make up the great majority of life. But once you set the wheels in motion, it’s amazing how truly freeing it is. Simply live and let live. We can only control ourselves; not others, not our surroundings. The sooner we realize this and stop trying, the better. At the end of the day, you might even find you have more time to do the things you truly want to. Imagine that.

A recent survey suggests that 70 percent of Americans feel helpless to act during a cardiac emergency because they don’t know how to administer CPR or they’re afraid of hurting the victim. In honor of National CPR and AED Awareness Week, June 1st7th, the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association encourages everyone to learn Hands-Only CPR by watching a short video by visiting www.heart.org/ HandsOnlyCPR. Cardiac arrest is an electrical malfunction in the heart that causes an irregular heartbeat and disrupts the flow of blood to the brain, lungs and other organs. Each year, over 326,000 outof-hospital cardiac arrests

occur in the U.S. and only 10 percent of outof-hospital cardiac arrest victims survive. According to the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association, 70 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in homes and residential settings. Therefore, if you are called on to give CPR in a cardiac emergency, you will most likely be trying to save the life of someone you love. CPR, especially when performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. Hands-Only CPR has just two simple steps: If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, (1) Call 9-1-1; and (2) Push hard and fast in the center of the chest. During CPR, you should push on the chest at a rate of at least

Along the banks of the lagoon wreathed with arrowhead, spiker rush, pickerel weed and giant bullrush, I rest with book in hand and ponder my placid environs. Dwarf sailboats with colored masts soar along the water. A speeding motorboat tows a teenage lad on jet skis through the frothy wake, churning spumes of cool water against his sinewy body. A tawny middle age man perched in a kayak, outfitted in a life vest, navigates his oars right and left. Brilliant sunlight reflects the glossy orange hue of the boat’s hull. A young woman with auburn hair streaming behind her shoulders, in pink tank top and striped shorts, pedals a bicycle pathside. She waves hi to a senior man and wife strolling the road during their recreation walk.

A pair of black birds sporting roseate heads, chalk-like lines on sooty wings and tail, yellow beaks and three large frontal talons, beheld moments ago maneuvering and bouncing in the water, now on land pecking at the grass like chickens. A striking zebra long-wing butterfly propels about sea daisies and flyweed, flowers attracted to its scent. One observes billowy white and grey clouds set on a backdrop of light blue sky. This serene, halcyon atmosphere mingled with refreshing breezes account for the therapeutic elixir, easing the tensions and stresses of the day. All this augments happiness and contentment in life and emphasizes the sentiment that “Life Is Extraordinary.”
