makes this farm special. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has 6 distinct areas: The Memorial Garden: The Memorial Garden is at the front tip of their property. It is a quiet, shaded area with flowers, beautiful greenery and a peaceful waterfall to remember people who have passed on. The Education Garden: The Education Garden area grows many heirloom varieties, has a small compost area and hosts educational events for small groups. The Greenhouse: The Greenhouse allows this farm to extend their season during the colder months. The Community Garden: The Community Garden hosts Brookhaven Community garden plots. The Garden of Ephraim: The Garden of Ephraim is a wheelchair accessible garden, which consists of a beautiful paved area with raised beds! There is also street access directly into The Garden of Ephraim. Food Pantry Donation Area: This area of the farm consists of several acres of farm land and is the main growing area. The selfless efforts of all the volunteers that work hard to keep this farm afloat is truly a blessing. They don’t get paid a dime, but they love what they do. To me, this farm shines bright as a symbol of hope and resilience. However, it needs some more help itself. We are dedicated to support, education, and communication for thyroid cancer survivors, their families and friends. We

also sponsor Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month, yearround awareness activities, and thyroid cancer research fundraising and research grants. At meetings people share thyroid cancer information, their experiences, and insights on how they are coping with thyroid cancer. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a nonprofit organization with a rich history. You may know and love their farm, or you may never believe there is an 11-acre farm in Centereach that has been feeding Long Islanders for decades! The James Hobbs family came to Long Island from Georgia in 1906 and grew farm produce in New Village (North Centereach) for local Long Islanders for 3 generations, first as farm workers and later purchasing the land, which became known as Hobbs Farm. James’ son, Alfred Hobbs took ownership in 1955 and farmed his own property, as well as rental farmland in the surrounding area for many years. He passed up many opportunities to sell the property, hoping that it would always remain a farm. Thankfully, it does remain a farm to this day. Hobbs Farm is the last farm in Centereach, as well as the last AfricanAmerican family farm on Long Island. When Mr. Hobbs passed away in 1996, he left the farm property to the Bethel AME Church in Setauket, where he was a member. The farm was renamed Bethel Hobbs Community Farm. However, the church struggled with local community organizations that were threatening to buyout the land for other means. In 2007, “Friends of Hobbs Farm” was formed, which led to the restoration process of the farm. Today, the church still owns the farm, a non-profit organization that is entirely operated by volunteers. The farm is 11 acres and it grows and harvests an average of over 30,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to several local food pantries and soup kitchens on the island. They also offer CSA Memberships, which allows locals to receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown on their farm right in Centereach. The produced is packed the same day as they go out for delivery, and recipiants can rest knowing exactly where they were grown. Additionally, the farm offers educational programs, community events and they have a seasonal farm stand. With a strong faith-based history and being that it is still owned by a local church, you will notice a strong Christian presence as soon as you walk onto their land. Faith based signs, a large wooden cross and a welcoming peaceful environment truly

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the Town of Oyster Bay is seeking to honor veterans as part of the annual Veterans Awards Ceremony, and nominations are currently being sought. The ceremony will take place as part of the Town’s “Salute to Veterans” event featuring Lee Greenwood, which is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at 7:30 pm at TOBAY Beach. Residents are invited to nominate extraordinary individuals who have made a difference in our veteran communities. “In these uncertain times, I wanted to make sure we found an especially meaningful way to recognize those who bravely and selflessly served our nation. This holds special significance this year, as most Memorial Day activities are cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The Town of Oyster Bay invites residents to nominate extraordinary individuals who have made a difference in our veteran communities. Urgent Effort to Find Kidney Donor for Mother of Triplets Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggiWhitton (D - Glen Cove) is joining the Jepp family, LiveOnNY and local organ donation advocates in an urgent search for a living donor for Vivian, who has endured years of dialysis and two previous attempts at transplants. Vivian Jepp, a Port Washington mother of 10-year-old triplet boys is in desperate need of a kidney transplant. Legislator DeRiggiWhitton met with Vivian on Thursday, April 26 during a dome-lighting ceremony commemorating National Donate Life Month. Her search for a donor was sidelined in the spring of 2020 by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now that public health conditions have improved and stabilized, the race is on to find her a match. “Vivian’s story is heartbreaking - and it is a call to action for all of

us,” Legislator DeRiggiWhitton said. “In recent months, I have witnessed the miracle of organ donation first-hand and seen how a living donor continued to thrive after giving one of my dearest friends her kidney - and with it, a renewed lease on life. If you have either A or O-type blood, I urge you to get screened as a potential donor and consider giving Vivian, her husband, and their three boys the greatest gift of all.” Vivian has navigated health struggles throughout much of her adult life. Shortly after graduating college 33 years ago, Vivian was diagnosed with systemic lupus - an inflammatory disease in which the immune system attacks its own tissue. The disease commonly affects a patient’s joints, skin and kidneys. Vivian was an elementary school teacher in New York City until five years ago, when

her kidneys began to fail. Soon thereafter, she began dialysis treatments. Due to the extensive strain dialysis places on human body and the lengthy wait time for a deceased donor, a living donor represents Vivian’s best chance for surviving and thriving. Town Offers Guide on Native Plant Species & Home Gardening Tips Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson announced that the Town has an informative guide available to residents interested in planting Native Plant Species in their home gardens. Native plants are traditionally found in a local region, where they are adapted to the local climate and soil conditions. This makes them hardy, more resistant to insects and disease, and generally easier to maintain. “With the spring season upon us, the concept of home gardening interests many people, but those without green thumbs may be unsure where to begin. Getting a quick explanation of local plant species that are easy to maintain, as well as provide environmental benefits, may be just what an aspiring gardener needs,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “There are many plant species that help improve air quality, while attracting butterflies, bees or birds.” As gardeners continue to discover benefits of native plants, local retailers have been stocking these and other species. Town To Offer Swim Program S u p e r v i s o r Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Laura Maier recently announced that the Town of Oyster Bay will offer a swim program this summer at outdoor pools located in SyossetWoodbury Community Park and Marjorie R. Post Community Park in Massapequa. “Get ready to dive into Oyster Bay Town pools this

summer and improve your stroke,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We are proud to offer this swim program to children that reside in the Town of Oyster Bay. Swim programs like this really bring the community together and are an integral part in the training of our young swimmers for the future.” Town of Oyster Bay residents aged 6 to 16 are

eligible to register for the swim program. Workouts will be held on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays, from 9:30am to 10:30am beginning Wednesday, July 7th and ending on Friday, August 13th. stated, “Many of our young people lost the ability to jump into the pool and improve their swim skills during the pandemic due to restrictions in place at the time. Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson today announced that residents who are interested in shaping up for summer can register for the Town’s new Outdoor Boot Camp course, which includes calisthenics and bodyweight exercises along with cardio and strength training. Classes are offered to individuals 18 years of age or older outside the Hicksville

Athletic Center. Councilwoman Johnson stated, “This new Outdoor Boot Camp course is designed to keep your body guessing and your face smiling. We will cover everything from basic circuit training to interval training, and the format will change every week. Modifications are always offered to suit all participants, so all levels are welcome. Join us this summer to stay in shape.”

The new Outdoor Booth Camp course is 10 weeks long, meeting on Wednesdays from 9am – 10am, beginning on July 7th. Bring your own hand weights, resistance bands and exercise mat. Class enrollment will be limited to allow for proper social distancing measures. Masks must be worn as long as State mandates require such. Temperatures will be checked upon entry. The

facility will be cleaned and sanitized daily, both before and after classes. Registration is available at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville from 5:30pm to 9:30pm on Monday, June 7th, Tuesday, June 8th and Thursday, June 10th. The schedule is subject to change. If a session is cancelled, make-up day(s) will be attempted.

Class fees are $60 for residents and $70 for non-residents (checks or money orders only). Proof of residency/age required when registering, with TOB residents given first preference. Programs Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin – in collaboration with Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, Councilman Bruce Blakeman, Councilman Anthony D’Esposito, Councilman Dennis Dunne, Sr., Councilman Thomas Muscarella and Councilman Chris Carini – is inviting residents to participate in the S.T.O.P (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) Program to help safeguard our environment from toxic materials by properly disposing of certain hazardous materials found in the average home. All S.T.O.P. programs will be completely contactless to keep residents safe in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants are

asked to place all materials in their trunks and remain in their vehicles – employees working the S.T.O.P. events will do the rest! “The Town of Hempstead is dedicated to keeping our community green, clean and pristine, and we encourage all residents to join us in that mission by safely disposing of hazardous materials at Town of Hempstead S.T.O.P. events,” stated Supervisor Clavin. “These free programs will be offered throughout 2021, so come on down to get rid of your hazardous materials while helping to protect our environment.” The town’s S.T.O.P Program is a simple and economical approach to

the disposal of items such as batteries, certain types of cleaners, pesticides, aerosol cans and many other items. It is open to all Hempstead Town residents, excluding businesses. Seaford Sixth Graders Make The Most Of Middle School The first year of middle school was definitely unusual for Seaford’s sixth graders, but despite restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they still learned a lot, made new friends and had new experiences. One significant change this year was that the teachers moved classrooms instead of the students. Although sixth graders were with the same classmates all day, similar to elementary school, they did get to have different teachers for each subject. Every class also featured a mix of students who came from the Harbor and the Manor elementary schools. “I’ve been able to meet new people and make new friends,” sixth grader Meredith Goldberger said about one of the highlights of the school year. Meredith also took advantage of one popular aspect of middle school – clubs – which resumed in November. She was treasurer of the Service Club, which performed community service activities, and was a class representative on the

student council. Gianna Price-Longo joined the art, robotics, science, service and theater clubs, making the most of the afterschool offerings at Seaford Middle School. She said she enjoyed spending the extra time at school and learning beyond what was taught in class. Danica D’Aniello made time in her afternoon schedule for the Art Club, Service Club and Ping Pong Club, allowing her to explore her creativity, do some community service and get some exercise. “It gave me something else to do after school,” she said. “The clubs were really fun.” Academically, students also had a good year. James Branch said that sixth grade math is definitely harder, but he enjoyed the challenge. Jozanna Collichio said she liked when the class went outside for science lessons in the courtyard. Maddie O’Hagan added that just being in school, as opposed to remote instruction, made it easier to learn as she benefits from inperson interaction with her

teachers and classmates. Sixth graders liked having their own laptops, provided through the Personalized Digital Learning Initiative, which they used both in school and at home to access their coursework and submit their assignments. Although they did spend most of the day in the same room, there were also opportunities to move around, such as for physical education, recess and music lessons. Principal Dan Smith and Assistant Principal Lisa Dunn commended the sixth graders for being able to make such a smooth transition to middle school despite all the changes and challenges. They said that although the students didn’t get the full “middle school experience,” they still made the most of the opportunities and showed that they are a resilient group. “They’ve been so wonderful and cooperative,” Ms. Dunn said. “They’ve been able to make friends and build relationships, even under the COVID restrictions.”

Addressing The Challenges Of Long-Distance Caregiving Taking care of an elderly loved one can be fulfilling. It isn’t always easy, however. Having to do it from another city or state can make the challenges seem even more complex. Out of the 34 million Americans who provide care to older family members, 15 percent live an hour or more away from their relative. Out of these, nearly 80 percent work full- or part-time. How do they manage? It takes organization, determination and a supportive employer. Long-distance caregivers provide a wide array of services at great cost to themselves. According to a survey by the National Alliance for Caregiving, long-distance caregivers spend an average of $392 per month on travel and out-of-pocket expenses. The expenditure in time is no less than the expenditure in dollars. Out of the more than 1,100 long-distance caregivers contacted by the National Alliance for Caregiving, half of them said they spend nearly 14 hours a month arranging care services and half said they spend another 16 hours a month checking on their care recipient or monitoring the care being received. Nearly three-quarters of these

long-distance caregivers provide help with instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) such as transportation, shopping, cooking, cleaning, managing finances and medications-for an average of 22 hours per month. Considering that so many long-distance caregivers are employed, they often have to make significant adjustments to their work schedules to allow for their caregiving responsibilities. Twentyfive percent of the surveyed long-distance caregivers had shortened their workday while they were caregiving and 36 percent reported missing full days of work. Twelve percent had taken a leave of absence. The forces that have created today’s longdistance caregiver realities, including an aging population, families separated by distance, more women entering the workforce, and global competitiveness among

companies, are unlikely to reverse themselves in the near future. Rather, the challenges and workbalance issues are likely to accelerate. Clearly, long-distance caregiving already impacts retention and productivity. What can an employer do? Certainly, sensitizing line managers to the issue is a reasonable starting point. Adjusting policies to allow job sharing and short-time relief, as well as providing information and help in coordinating eldercare, are definitely worthwhile investments, compared to the cost of attrition and lost productivity. And, since long-distance caregivers have financial burdens as well as time conflicts, programs that offer help with these are beneficial. For example, voluntary pooling of frequent flyer miles for employees who need to travel on family emergencies is an idea worth considering.
