The Saga of Squeegee By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Beautiful turquoise betta seeking small, non-disruptive companion to cohabitate within fully equipped tank. Must be able to vacuum gravel and plant surfaces; windows a plus. So, some of you may be wondering how my new pal Squeegee the Snail fared. In short, not well. His stay was brief – less than a week, in fact – and quite unsuccessful. While I may have played a role in his untimely demise, I must say he didn’t seem very lively upon arrival. No matter how many times I tried to greet him {read: head-butted his shell repeatedly}, he never seemed to want to come out and play.

While disappointing, it wasn’t until my Human began depositing small “cookies” (algae wafers) into the tank for Squeegee to consume that my irritation set in. Why should this bizarre-looking golden shell of a creature have an even better menu to choose from than me? Here I was, forced to suck down my bland betta pellets, while HE had a giant wafer to inhale. Well, of course I couldn’t handle such a slight, and so, as soon as my Human would leave the room, I would knock Squeegee upside down and drag his cookie to the other side of the tank, where I would happily munch away at it. I think my Human was upset by this, as she kept muttering something about “crumbs” and what a mess I was making.

Isn’t that what the purpose of this stupid snail was to begin with? In any case, after four or five days, Squeegee stopped poking his head out of his shell entirely. Maybe it was starvation, since I did consume all his cookies. Maybe it was the concussion I gave him upon initially welcoming him to my abode. Maybe he wasn’t the healthiest snail in the tank to begin with. Whatever the reason, my companion was removed by the Human, with admonitions to “behave” and comments that I was a “little brat” who “couldn’t get along with anyone.” Well, fine then. Cancel the rental notice. This betta prefers to fly solo! Maybe I can still get a couple of those cookies to go though?

annually since 2006. Mrs. Smith’s positive attitude and high energy level ensures student engagement and participation. Registration Open When the Town of Hempstead Triathlon raced onto the scene over 30 years ago, it was a one-of-a-kind event, a competitive trendsetter that helped inspire the current popularity of Long Island Triathlons. A compelling test of skill and endurance, the town Triathlon is contested along the beautiful ocean beachfront and through quaint seaside communities. Entry applications for the 2016 Triathlon, to be held on Saturday, September 10th, are available online at www.toh.li/activities/ triathlon or by calling the Department of Parks and Recreation at 516.292.9000, extension 7219. An exciting combination of swimming, biking and running, the 2016 Triathlon is scheduled for an 8:00 a.m. start on Saturday, September 10th at Town Park Point Lookout. Set along the beautiful shoreline at Town Park Point Lookout, the Triathlon begins with a hearty three-quarter mile ocean swim. After emerging from the surf, competitors peddle off on a ten-mile bike through the streets of Point Lookout and Lido Beach. The final leg of the Triathlon is a fivemile run to the finish line at Town Park. “The Triathlon is a premier event on the town’s athletic calendar, attracting competitors from across Long Island and throughout the Metropolitan area,” commented Supervisor Anthony J. Santino. “The race showcases the athletic skill and competitive spirit of all 300 participants.” To receive a 2016 Triathlon application by mail, simply send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: Town of

Coordinated by Manor art teacher Mariana Beach, with the assistance of Manor Principal Debra Emmerich, Manor Band Director Dan Krueger, physical education teachers Ken Botti and Dianne Dunn, who taught the game to staff members and students, the evening featured a performance by the 5th grade band, adult and students Quidditch teams, and many volunteers who pitched in to sell tickets, donate items, and prepare and sell refreshments, as well as shirts and pom-poms.

The Friends of Mercy Medical Center will host their famous Luau on Thursday, June 16th, at the Ocean Club in Atlantic Beach from 7 to 11 p.m. This casual, fun evening will be a great night you won’t want to miss. Enjoy an array of Hawaiianinspired food, including surf & turf and exotic cocktails. The music is sure to energize the crowd, and tickets are $100 per person. “Reverse Raffle” tickets, whereby the last 12 tickets pulled are the winners, are available for $100 each. The final ticket pulled will be awarded $7,000! Only 200 raffle tickets are sold for the evening, so reserve yours early! Raffle tickets can be purchased by individuals or by groups.The drawings will be held throughout the Luau, and winners need not be present to win.

Exploring Professions Seaford Middle School eighth-graders dressed for success as they met with experts from a host of professions during Career Day. Students sharpened their interviewing skills and expanded their knowledge of career options they may consider in the future. Close to 90 professionals in the fields of engineering, computers, business and finance, health care, teaching, law enforcement, firefighting and the performing arts, among many others, sat with students in small groups and offered up advice to get students thinking about what career paths they may want to follow. Some

participants were parents or alumni of Seaford Schools, including one parent who was on business in Australia but, with the help of the school’s technology department, was able to participate in Career Day via Skype. In addition to meeting in small groups, students were led outside to see demonstrations from K-9 police officer Karl Kuhne and his canine partner, Bori, and Bussani Wheelchair Accessible Vans General Manager Dan Walsh, who showed students a van with wheelchair lifts and a passenger seat that turned and adjusted in various positions. Students came prepared

with 60 questions, and asked 10 general and 10 specific questions during three separate interviews. After taking copious notes, students selected their best interview and developed a followup essay to present in their English classes. Students were asked to reflect on the person that influenced them the most, according to Carin Hoy, middle school English teacher and coordinator of the event. “That person receives the student’s essay anonymously,” she said. “The students often leave the event feeling inspired and enlightened about the various professions,” Hoy said. “Extending

the assignment beyond career day and into the classroom keeps the students focused and helps reinforce what they learned.” Hoy added that the commitment by the

professionals and parents who volunteer their time to make this event a success is “truly overwhelming. They are always willing to help with this event.” Daniel Smith, principal

of Seaford Middle School, thanked all the professionals for making Career Day a huge success and for volunteering their time and expertise to help guide students on a path for the future.
