More than 7,000 participants helped raise a record $635,000 at four Northwell Health Walks across Long Island, Westchester and Staten Island on Sunday. From the Jones Beach boardwalk in Wantagh to Tanger Outlets in Riverhead, supporters laced up to support women and children’s health initiatives, and cardiac and cancer care. Mr. and Mrs. Met greeted walkers at the Jones Beach 5K while Zumba instructors warmed up the crowd at Midland Beach in Staten Island, part of a festive day with a serious goal: Funds go to several area hospitals, with the Jones Beach walk benefiting Northwell’s Katz Institute for Women’s Health and Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park. “This day is about empowering women and their families and helping them on the path to wellness,” said Stacey E. Rosen, MD, vice president

of women’s health at the Katz Institute for Women’s Health. “The support we received – both in turnout and through donation – at all four venues is absolutely fantastic. The Katz Institute for Women’s Health is one of the beneficiaries and we are committed to the health of women of all ages through clinical programs, education, research and community partnerships.” Since its inception, the Northwell Health Walk has raised nearly $3.3 million. Donations will be collected through June 9th. It will also save lives. Matthew Gendron is proof. His team, which marched en masse at Jones Beach, was simply happy to see the 19 year-old from Howard Beach, Queens, still standing after he was rushed to Cohen Children’s in septic shock last May. “I was 30 minutes away from dying,” said Mr. Gendron. “I’m walking to say thank you to the doctors who saved my

life and to raise money so other kids can receive the same care and go on to have a happy life.” Mr. Gendron was born with a rare blood disease, known as Auto Immune Lympho Proliferative Syndrome (ALPS), which is defined by a low platelet count. Cohen Children’s previously treated his preexisting condition. But one morning last May, he woke up very ill and was rushed to Cohen, where he passed out in the elevator upon arrival. Medical staff quickly diagnosed Mr. Gendron and he recovered after five weeks of treatment in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. “No matter how bad it got, I knew Matthew was in the best hands and I never once doubted that they would save my son,” said his mother, Holly Gendron. “We are raising money so that other families can receive the support and care my family was given.”

Raising the Flag There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours taken out of the weekend to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in

the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully put away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tonguein-cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are

pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime. Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple starting their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

Seaford Manor and Harbor Elementary School students had a special bonding moment with their loved ones when they had the opportunity to bring a family member to school. During Special Someone’s Day at Harbor Elementary School, kindergartners and firstgraders, in two separate sessions, invited their special guest to help them make a picture frame craft and then have their picture taken to put in the frame as a special memento. After

making their craft the first-graders participated in a read aloud. The kindergartners performed several songs, such as “God Bless America” using sign language, and “Peck, Peck on the Warm White Egg” to celebrate the hatching of the class’ baby chicks. Grandparents at Manor Elementary School’s Seniors’ Day were entertained at a school-wide event in the gymnasium featuring the fifth-grade advanced band, the Manor School jugglers, American Legion

Essay Winners Sofia Bolen and Dylan Wong who read their American Dream essays, and performances by second-graders and third-graders. With notepads in hand and wearing their professional best, Seaford Middle School eighthgraders sharpened their interviewing skills, asked questions and gained a better understanding of what it takes to pursue a particular field during Career Day, May 18th. Sitting in small groups throughout the cafeteria and gymnasium, students learned about veterinary medicine, engineering, writing, culinary arts, law enforcement and music recording, among many other fields. Students were required to prepare 60 questions, and ask 10 general and 10 specific questions during three separate interviews with professionals from three different fields, according to Carin Hoy,

middle school English teacher and coordinator of the event. After careful note taking, the students then had to select their best interview and develop a follow-up essay to present in their English classes. “Students were asked to reflect on the person that influenced them the most and that person receives the student’s essay anonymously,” she said, noting that extending the assignment beyond the event “keeps students focused and helps reinforce their learning.” After meeting with business owners, eighthgrader Julia Gambino said, “I feel I really learned why they decided to own their own company and think it’s kind of cool to be your own boss. I’m really thankful to Mrs. Hoy for

coordinating the event and to all the participants for sharing their knowledge.” Classmate Colin Merrigan chose to learn about aviation, computers and law enforcement and said he found it “very interesting to learn about what each job is about,” pointing to the aviation table which consisted of a flight instructor and an air traffic controller, as an example. Hoy expressed her gratitude to the parents and volunteers who every year make the event a success. Daniel Smith, principal of Seaford Middle School, thanked all the professionals for volunteering their time and expertise to help guide students on a future career path.

MBI is revolutionizing women’s imaging through the use of a radioactive tracer and special camera to detect breast cancer despite dense breast tissue, which applies to 50% of women. This is the first innovative technology in breast imaging in years and can help in the fight to reduce breast cancer deaths.
