hrough the convenience of videoconferencing, Seaford Manor kindergartners took a virtual field trip to the Buffalo Zoo where they participated in an interactive “zoo’s clues” game to help them learn about various animals. The videoconference was one of a series that are offered to students throughout the district to enhance learning in a fun and interactive way without leaving the classroom.

I am willing to bet that there are many children who were probably raised to think the sole purpose of Memorial Day is strictly to roll out the barbecues, open the pool for the season, head to the beach for the first time and check out all those great sales. Pretty sad, when you think about it. Such a holiday is surely not a “happy” occasion in the traditional sense; although,

for most people, all that matters is that it qualifies as a paid day off. And there we are, off and running, blissfully unaware and increasingly unpatriotic as a result. When did this sense of apathy set it? Is it just a manifestation of the more recent generations, or is it representative of our country as a whole? Now, I’m certain there are many to whom this sentiment does not apply. Any veterans, or the family and friends of those who have served, are generally quite appreciative of such a day’s significance. I, for one, admit that I had never attended any kind of Memorial Day commemoration prior to this year when my family

decided to take a ride out to Calverton for the cemetery’s annual services. Sure, it was solemn, but you know what? So is the fact that hundreds of thousands of people have lost their lives over the course of the last several centuries in wars at home and abroad. Is it really asking too much to observe a day – a portion of a day, even – to appreciate that sacrifice? So, the next time some overly-commercialized holiday comes along, take a moment to reflect upon the reason why it was made a national holiday in the first place. I doubt it was to give people another excuse to have a barbecue.

St. Joseph’s College (SJC) will hold its 24th Annual Golf Classic on Monday, June 9th, at the Plandome Country Club in Plandome. The 2014 honoree is Don Lizak, former athletic director of SJC’s Long Island Campus. All proceeds from this event will support the College’s athletic programs. Since 1994, Don Lizak worked to transform SJC athletics into the highly regarded athletic program that it is today. After becoming an NCAA Division III institution in 1997, SJC won the Skyline Conference Presidents Cup four times and grew from eight varsity sports to 19. During his tenure at the College, Lizak oversaw the opening of the John A. Danzi Athletic Center in 1997 and the 24.8-acre Outdoor Field Complex in 2012. Dressed for success, the entire eighth-grade class at Seaford Middle School sharpened their interviewing skills and expanded their knowledge of career options when they met with experts from more than 20 different fields during Career Day. Professionals in the fields of engineering, computers, business and finance, health care, teaching, law enforcement and the performing arts, among many others, sat with students and offered up advice to get students thinking about what career paths they want to follow. professionals were parents and/or alumni of Seaford Schools. Each student came prepared with 60 questions, and asked 10 general and 10 specific questions during three separate interviews. After taking careful notes, students selected their best interview and developed a follow-up essay for their English classes. “The assignment keeps the students focused and helps reinforce what they learned at Career Day,” said Carin Hoy, a middle school English teacher who coordinated the event. Students left the event feeling inspired and

enlightened about the various professions. “It gave me better insight about what a job actually involves,” said eighthgrader Juliana Palozzolo. “It was fun,” said classmate Jacob Provenzano. “I learned specific things about jobs that I thought I knew about…even my dad’s.” Daniel Smith, principal of Seaford Middle School, thanked all the professionals for making Career Day a huge success and for volunteering their time and expertise to help guide students on a path for the future.

First Place Award

“Hope,” a multipanelled artwork created by three classes of visual art students at Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, was awarded a First Prize in the 2014 student art competition at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center in Glen Cove, Long Island. The work was designed and built during the summer of 2013 at the renowned summer arts day camp, which is also an agency of the UJA-Federation of New York. It was conceived as a visual metaphor for the chronology of events that precipitated the Holocaust and its aftermath. The Usdan winning prize, in the Multi-Media/Still category, was awarded at the Center on Sunday May 18th. The project was conceived by Usdan Art Department Chair Rochelle Morgan, who is a child of Holocaust

CAMP ANCHOR SUPPORT - Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray joined town officials and members of the Peninsula Kiwanis for presentation of $3,500 check from the Kiwanis to the town’s ANCHOR Program for physically challenged residents. Ceremony took place at Lido Beach Town Park during the Annual Camp ANCHOR Field Day and Family Picnic sponsored by the Peninsula Kiwanis.

survivors. It began with a visit to Usdan in August by Ms Morgan’s mother and aunt, Lucy Gutman and Rita Kurz, who spoke and were interviewed by the student artists about their experiences in concentration camps. The students wanted to know how people survive horrific life events but still maintain dignity, integrity and compassion; and the artistic task for the students was to find the proper medium and method to best respond to this question. They also wanted their artwork to pay tribute to two women who, in the face of extraordinary abominations, managed not only to salvage their existence but to subsequently live full and productive lives in New York. The result is a large lucite “box” of approximately six feet in length, painted on both sides by students who have depicted scenes that bring the sisters’ story to life. Each spring, the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center offers competitions for students centered on a theme of social justice, tolerance, and respect for diversity. The competitions offer students the opportunity to showcase their creative talents. Winning entries are exhibited at the Center and photographed for inclusion in its Competition Journal. The mission of the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County is to teach the history of the Holocaust and its lessons, through education and community outreach. These include the dangers of antisemitism, racism, bullying and all other manifestations of intolerance, promoting resistance to prejudice and advocating respect for every human being. Usdan Center offers more than 40 programs in music, dance, theater, visual arts, creative writing, nature and

Registration and check-in start at 9 a.m. and the walk on the one mile course begins at 10:30 a.m. Join Long Island walk leaders Barbara Geller, Denise Gesuale and Dawn Selg, along with patients, families, and friends for an lively and fun event that raises money for support services and research. The walk helps bring awareness to scleroderma, an autoimmune disease that affects the body’s connective tissue - for which there is no known cause and no cure impacting an estimated 30,000 men, women, and children in the tri-state area. After Harbor staff member Lisa Hraska saw a story on the “Today Show” about a second-grader in Pennsylvania who invented the Buddy Bench to “eliminate loneliness and foster friendship on the playground,” the idea was brought to the Harbor Student Council who

put the idea in motion. Working with teacher Erin Jones, the Student Council designed a colorful bench and unveiled it to the student body earlier this month. “The Buddy Bench is a place where any student can sit to look for another student to talk to or play with,” said Student Council Advisor and fifth-grade teacher Kerry

Hansen. “Use of the bench is centered on the values of caring, sharing and respect, and the belief that all children should feel like they belong.” The Student Council wrote songs and skits to perform at an assembly to promote the use of the Buddy Bench. ALS or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s

disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Ride for Life is an annual event in which ALS patients ride their power wheelchairs along with supporters through communities to raise funds for a cure and create awareness for the disease. Members of Seaford Middle School National Junior Honor Society presented Pendergast

with a check for $300 for the cause and Pendergast spoke to the crowd, thanking them for their support. “It was quite and event,” said Seaford Middle School Principal Dan Smith. “It was heartwarming to see our Seaford family rally together for this important cause and to work towards making a difference in the lives of people who are stricken by this horrible disease.”

School Superintendent Brian L. Conboy was presented with the Administrator of the Year Award from the Nassau BOCES School Library System (NBSLS). The honor spotlights Conboy’s longtime track record of supporting the growth and advancement of library services in Seaford Schools. Accepting the award at Nassau BOCES Robert E. Lupinskie Center in front of Seaford staff and librarians from Nassau County school districts, Conboy said, “Several years ago I heard someone in a lecture say that as an adult, if you read five books a year, you read more than 95 percent of the American population. Now there’s a statistic that we can all agree needs some attention and it can start with us in our schools.” Conboy, who spoke of his father as a voracious reader and his mother who worked as a clerk at the Seaford Public Library, grew up in Seaford, graduated from Seaford Schools and worked in the district in various capacities during his

30-year career. Through the years he has helped transform the libraries into highly functional centers for learning. Recalling an overhaul of the middle school library in the late nineties, Conboy noted that the Seaford libraries became among the first places where internet connectivity was established and video conferencing capability was set up. His plan for success also included hiring highly qualified staff and providing professional development opportunities through NBSLS, securing necessary funding, integrating technology, including interactive whiteboards, Mac computers, and e-readers; promoting numerous reading campaigns and literacy programs, and encouraging crosscurricular collaboration and the importance of reading to help students perform better in all subject areas. “Mr. Conboy recognizes that the library is the center of learning in each school and the incredible value that each teacher librarian provides for our students and faculty,” wrote Seaford Middle School librarian Michelle Golub who nominated Conboy for the award. “We are proud to work in a school district that has such a dedicated, proactive and progressive leader who continually supports the advancement of our school library system.”

The Center is open to all young people from age 6 to 18.
