With the health and safety of the public in mind, Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin and Receiver of Taxes Jeanine Driscoll joined together on Monday, May 18 to celebrate the opening of three new “Safer” DriveThru Payment Offices across Hempstead Town. The new offices, complete with drive-thru booths staffed by employees from the Receiver of Taxes Office, provide residents the option of paying their property taxes in-person while practicing safe social distancing. The list of drive-thru tax payment sites available to Town of Hempstead residents seeking to pay their property tax bill in-person is as follows: Behind the Receiver of Taxes Office at 200 North Franklin Street in Hempstead Rock Hall Museum, 199 Broadway in Lawrence Echo Park, 399 Nassau Boulevard in West Hempstead Seamans Neck Park, 2700 South Seamans Neck Road in Seaford The new Drive-Thru Payment Offices in West Hempstead, Lawrence and Seaford will be open to the public on weekdays between the hours of 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. through June 1st. The drive-thru payment booth behind the Receiver of Taxes office is open weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. All offices will be closed Monday, May 25th in observance of Memorial Day. These locations can only accept payments made by check or money order. The new deadline for residents to pay their second half 2019/2020 school tax payments was extended until June 1, 2020 through Executive Order by Governor Andrew Cuomo. The extension for taxpayers came after Supervisor Clavin, Receiver of Taxes Driscoll, and other local leaders requested

Stony Brook University Hospital Accepting I-Pad Donation Members of the community have been reaching out and asking how they can help the healthcare professionals and those afflicted with COVID-19 pandemic. One very important way: we need an influx of iPads to keep our inpatients connected to their providers and their families. Anyone who has an iPad that is not being used, please consider donating to Stony Brook University Hospital. We will repurpose the donated device to provide telecommunication for our patients to connect with our medical staff. We are looking for about one
hundred devices of a supported iPad model. Before donation, the device should be cleaned, reset (click here for instructions), and placed in a zip lock bag if possible with a viable power chord. It takes a team effort to convert these devices into a secure patient friendly solution. We will do our best to make your gift count and give someone comfort during these remarkable times. The Charity of The Month for May is: Guardians of Rescue to get food for their pets. However, Paws of War will at times arrive at their homes with no warning, knock on their door and tell them that they have some items to drop off for them. “You always see that tear in their eye” says Robert. “That someone actually cares enough to come to their home and bring them something is very special.” A lot of these veterans suffered for many years, all of which now have lifelong disabilities due to their service to our country. Paws of War feels that at the very least they can bring them pet food to give them a helping hand during these tough times. Additionally, Paws of War has partnered with Cambridge Catering, who is providing hot cooked meals free of charge to our veterans. Hank, a Smithtown resident and veteran, was someone that Paws of War helped. When they arrived at his home, they noticed a his two very proud flags were destroyed. They handed off the pet food and trays of hot food that Cambridge Catering has provided, but they didn’t stop there. They then went to the hardware store and purchased everything to fix and replace his flags. Guardians of Rescue and Paws of War can both use your support so they can continue to help others. Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals. We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans. Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways by this situation. Guardians of Rescue has been dealing with the Covid Crisis in many different ways, such as helping people feed their pets and taking on the responsibility to care for homeless animals. They have even stepped out of their realm of helping animals to assist seniors during these trying times. They are overwhelmed by the amount of assistance needed and their phones are ringing non-stop. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations have been down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses. “The pandemic has created a host of problem for the animals,” says Robert Misseri, President of this organization. “I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need.” Robert is also the President of Paws of War, another non-profit right here on Long Island. This organization trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military veterans that suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each veteran can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love only a companion animal can bring. Throughout this pandemic, they have been tending to the most at risk veterans. They find that their older senior veterans typically are very prideful and refuse to ask for any handouts. Many live alone and will still go out and put themselves at risk

Padlet Provides Poetry Sharing Platform Padlet is serving as a virtual bulletin board for second graders in Krista Clark’s class at Seaford Harbor Elementary School. With students participating in distance learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they took to the Internet to share their writing from the recent poetry unit. Children studied two types of poetry – alliteration and Haiku –
reading and listening to books on the digital library Epic! This allowed them to become more familiar with the two poetic styles, examining examples of each. Ms. Clark and her students also had poetry discussions over Zoom video chats. On Padlet, students shared original poetry on topics of their choice for their classmates to see. They could also add
a picture, graphic or GIF to accompany it. Michael Buck included a photo of himself in his Seaford Broncos jersey for a Haiku poem about football, while Samantha Juan used a picture of an ice cream cone for her alliterative poem about pistachio ice cream. Ms. Clark said that students were so enthusiastic about Padlet that many wrote and shared multiple poems.

Seaford Student Leaders Promoting School Spirit While hallways and classrooms usually filled with “Seaford Pride” are empty during the COVID-19 pandemic, Seaford High School’s student council officers are continuing to make sure that school spirit says strong. Virtual spirit days are a way that all members of the Seaford High School community can share their pride together. In different photo challenges,
students are encouraged to post certain pictures on their Instagram stories and tag the student government account, @ seafordhighschoolstuco. Past challenges have included pictures from the first day of school and the fall pep rally, participation in sports or extracurricular activities, wearing green and white and more. Treasurer Ben Trink noted that it is a way to keep the memories alive that
Seaford students made this year. Student government also made sure that students and teachers are staying connected. Teachers created Flipgrid videos to show what they have done and say what they have learned during the school closure, which student government shared with students in an e-newsletter. On May 8, student government returned the favor with
their own video for Teacher Appreciation Week with messages of thanks for Seaford High School teachers. President Katelyn Winter said it was a “gift to touch their hearts.” Another Flipgrid video project brought together all student government leaders – the student council officers who represent all 720 students at Seaford High School and class officers for each grade level, as well as the advisers. Their videos included messages of support and lessons learned over the first two months of the school closure. “The main message was an appreciation for what they have,” said teacher Tania Cintorio, who advises student government with Shari Raduazzo. Ms. Cintorino added that a major role of student government is community
service, and there is no better service right now that helping students stay connected. Everyone looks for leadership in times of uncertainty and Seaford High School’s student council leaders have risen to the occasion, she explained. Vice President Hailey Galison said that student government is also working a slideshow for the end of the year, asking students from all grades to submit photos that were taken throughout the school year from various events, activities and daily life at Seaford High. “It will remind everyone that while these times are different, we did have a nice school year,” Hailey said. “We have to remember to be grateful for everything that happened during our time in Seaford.” The student government
officers have lots of great memories from the school year. Katelyn recalls spirit week in the days leading up to the pep rally, while Hailey and Ben say their last concert on the Seaford High School stage was very memorable. Secretary Kate McClernon said student council’s charitable endeavors stand out for her, particularly the holiday toy drive. Katelyn noted that while they might not be in school, it is important to remember that the school year is not over, and they still remain classmates. “During this time, it’s important to have a lot of school spirit,” she said, noting that a decade from now the Class of 2020 will be remembered for overcoming obstacles to still have a special end to senior year.
