Students marked the milestone by dressing in styles reflective of the five decades the building has been in existence, from tie-dye shirts and love beads of the ‘60s to big hair and neon colors of the ‘80s. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) was awarded a $25,000 grant from the Long Island Community Foundation for the Military Families in Training (M-FIT) Program. Given the stressful nature of the military and the traumatizing experiences of war, many veterans experience psychological distress that is complicated by substance use. Many of these veterans are experiencing serious mental health concerns including substance use disorders (SUD) posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury, depression and serious psychological distress (SPD). This year, we had a 12-member team and did well against two really good schools.” John’s penchant for trying new things also taught him how to manage his time well as he prepares for college. The oldest sibling in the family, John credits his mother, an English teacher, for his success in the subject, and his father, who works in information technology, for helping him decide on pursuing an engineering career. He also points to teachers, including math teacher Kevin O’Reilly and social studies teacher Thomas Fioriglio, for their positive influence. As he graduates, John said he enjoyed high school and wouldn’t change a thing. To underclassmen, his advice is: “Be open-minded and give everything a shot.”

Seaford High School Salutatorian Elena Alberti speaks with such bright-eyed enthusiasm about her high school experiences and college plans, it’s infectious. She’s excited about attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to study Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Biological Engineering and Computer Science, and wants to build prosthetics that look more realistic and have the capability to sense touch. Elena has prepared for college and career in an out of the classroom and is the first in her family to pursue an engineering degree. She was named a National Merit Commended student and Advanced Placement Scholar of Distinction for
her success in the PSATs and AP tests, and has been awarded for academic excellence in subjects across the curriculum. In addition to working toward her 105.07 weighted grade-point average, she immersed herself in the Robotics/Engineering Club, taking on the roles of Vice President of Community Relations and Treasurer in 10th and 11th grade. The connections she made in those roles led her to one of her proudest achievements, raising $5,000 under a tight, twoweek deadline to send the club to St. Louis to compete in the F.I.R.S.T. Robotics World Championship. She also participated in a host of clubs, such as Freshman Mentors and Friends of Rachel, was a member of Flute Choir and Colorguard, tutored Spanish and has taken dance lessons for 10 years. In the summer, she continued to feed her curiosity in engineering by attending college exploration programs, including E2@MIT, a one-
week underwater robotics program. With strong leadership skills as her greatest strength, Elena said, “As a leader I not only complete the tasks given to me, but I challenge others to find themselves.” She credits computer teacher Lauren Thompsen who advised the Robotic Club for being a great mentor to her and math teacher Kevin O’Reilly for helping her pursue the E2@MIT program. “Mrs. Thompsen got me into engineering when she organized a field trip to Northrop Grumman for female students who were interested in the field,” Elena said. Elena advised students coming up the ranks to try everything to avoid looking back with regrets. And, despite the cliché, encouraged others “to just be yourself.” “I read somewhere that ‘the most beautiful form of rebellion is being yourself’,” she said, “and that is one of the standards I try to live by.”

Underneath his quiet, modest exterior is an academic superstar, a heavy hitter that can take just about any academic challenge and hit it out of the park. But Seaford High School Valedictorian John DeFrancisci doesn’t really see himself that way. Instead he sees himself as a person who enjoys many interests and takes great pride in successfully managing those pursuits simultaneously. It is in this very moment where we must take a stand for what we believe in - whether it be happiness, success, traveling, relationships or making a difference. About ninety five percent of people lay dormant on their couch whilst helplessly gulping on their chips of potatoes. They allow life to pass them by, as if they’re going to live for an eternity. And we wonder why our lives are mundane. There is something inside your heart calling out for you to accomplish. It begins with a firing desire, task planning and massive execution. Do not allow the time it will take or any naysayers to back you down toward their advantage points. Why? Because every great outcome began as a microscopic vision. The vision proceeded by getting planted with soil, which took preparation. Next was water and nurturing and some sun - which denotes the action steps it
took to grow. A few months stroll by. The tiny seed transforms into an entity, astounded by others and blossomed to inspire others to aspire to do the same. I believe we are here for a reason. To create, build, make and invent. We are artists. We create how we live day in and day out. You possess the paintbrush of change, possibility and creativity. Part of other experiences occurring in our lives are inevitable; however, how we react is in our control. When there are dark skies, there are the brightest of stars. When there are heavy rains, there are the most breathtaking of rainbows. So, fellow reader, are you planting your seeds on mother earth - the place we call home? Because our bodies are capable of anything. It is our minds we must convince. The resources required are directly in front of us: The natural sun, plentiful water and the soil by which our feet rests. It all starts with one, single seed.

Eyes On The Sky By: Jamie Lynn Ryan At this time of year, I usually write a column on the importance of appreciating Memorial Day for its intended purpose, to honor those who have served and sacrificed. Too easily do we as a society become swept up in the “unofficial summer kickoff” mentality, of BBQs and pool openings and the beginning of beach season. That said, there is one other Memorial Day tradition that I do truly enjoy, which mixes the significance of the occasion with some good oldfashioned fun in the sun. I am speaking of the Jones Beach Air Show, held each year on the Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. I’ve been attending the
show for the last seven years or so, enjoying the alternating featured performances of both the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels. As a member of the press, I was even lucky enough to have the opportunity a few years back to meet and greet the Blue Angels’ pilots at an exclusive preview held at Republic Airport. What an extraordinary experience! The great part is that the show never gets old. The camaraderie of sitting on the sand, eyes to the sky, with tens of thousands of fellow spectators is something special. Over the last several years, I have endured everything from severe sunburns to shivering under layers of clothing, buried under my beach blanket… from breezing right in to a prime oceanfront spot to being
forced to park on the median of Ocean Parkway after sitting in traffic for hours. Each year, no matter the conditions, I have been able to capture stunning photographs and, most importantly, to make happy, lasting memories with friends. Sure, it may be a frivolous, fun day at the beach; but ultimately, we are appreciating the grand spectacle of our military aircraft at its finest. It is a beautiful site to behold, one that everyone should make a point of taking in at least once in his or her lives. This weekend, I plan to join the masses in making my way to Jones Beach once again – armed with sunscreen, and several extra layers of clothing – just in case. Happy Summer to all!

Seniors Win State Awards Seven Seaford High School seniors were awarded New York State Academic Excellence scholarships for demonstrating high academic success on state Regents exams. Henry Cheung received a $1,500 scholarship, the highest honor which is awarded to one student
in each high school in the state. Elena Alberti, Austin Curran, John DeFrancisci, Julia Gliganic, Alexa Meyer and Robert Nill each received a $500 scholarship. The awards are to be used at colleges or universities in New York State and are renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study or five

Ron Russo, recent National Wrestling Hall of Fame inductee and one of the most accomplished athletes and coaches in Seaford history, has made the magnanimous gesture of donating his Hall of Fame plaque to Seaford High School. The honor, presented to Russo on April 24 during a ceremony at the Marriott Hotel in Melville, will now serve as inspiration for future generations of Seaford students. “Ron is a truly inspiring man,” said Seaford High School wrestling coach Dave Takseraas. “After giving a beautiful speech, he walked over to me, gave me his plaque and said his only request is that it be displayed in the hallway at Seaford High School next to Coach Gerbino’s plaque.” Robert Gerbino was also a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and was Russo’s coach in high school. Supporting Russo in his shining moment were his family members, old teammates from his Seaford High School

Division I coaching career at Columbia University where he was head coach for 18 years, earning three straight Ivy League titles from 1980-82. One of his most cherished honors came in 1985 when he was inducted into the Bloomsburg Athletic Hall of Fame. After leaving Columbia, Russo moved to Michigan to save a high school program that was about to cut wrestling. Twenty years later, he still coaches wrestling at Kalamazoo Central High School and his team has won over 200 matches, five conference titles, four district crowns and four Greater Kalamazoo County titles as well as six All-State Academic honors. “This is a remarkable achievement and honor for Ron and a huge honor for the Seaford community, especially since his induction was based mostly on his college accomplishments as a wrestler and a coach,” Takseraas added. “It is an honor for me to know him and to coach a team with such a rich history.”

Family & Children’s Association (FCA), one of Long Island’s oldest and largest human service agencies, is inviting Long Islanders to support their annual Summer Camp Appeal. For many families, the summer means free time, trips and camp for the kids. But, for the families served by FCA who are working one, two or even three minimum-wage jobs, the summer is difficult because they cannot
afford quality childcare to keep their children safe. A summer spent alone, in front of the TV, can lead to summer learning loss which hurts these children when summer ends and they return to school. FCA’s goal is to help 60 children by providing a $1,000 camp scholarship to families living below the federal poverty level. According to President/ CEO Jeffrey L. Reynolds, Ph.D., “our wish is
that all children can be protected and nourished through a summer camp experience that stimulates and challenges them academically, physically and emotionally, and keeps them safe while their parents work.
