Hope House Ministries (HHM) is a nonproﬁt organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal ﬁnancial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. All of the services Hope House Ministries offers are FREE! This includes housing, supportive professional services, counseling, healthcare, insurance, transportation, food, clothing and opportunities for education both for both high school, college or trade school. When explained to those new to their agency, few believe it possible. Many question how they are able to stay open. The answer is best left to the words of one of our alumni, “Hope House is truly a miracle. And that miracle is healing.” Simply put, your contributions make this miracle happen. The three most popular programs that HHM runs are their Hope Academy at Little Portion Friary, Montfort Therapeutic Residences and Pax Christi, their Emergency Shelter. See below for more information on each of these programs. Hope Academy at Little Portion Friary: In response to the opioid crisis, HHM

acquired Little Portion Friary in Mount Sinai in 2016 as a means of increasing their ability to serve more young men struggling with opioid addiction. This program assists in the development of a life plan with short and long term goals. It also promotes the development of interpersonal skills. The length of stay varies based on need, averaging 12-18 months. Each person is treated individually by professional clinical staff. Montfort Therapeutic Residences: This is an intensive therapeutic treatment facility for children ages 11-18 who find themselves caught in the family court system. These children come to them at a time of great crisis in their young lives. Montfort Therapeutic provides the young residents with a healthy, stable environment, a school program, individual counseling, group dynamics and educational recreational outings. The program also includes aftercare services for children returning home. Pax Christi: This emergency shelter offers guests who are homeless a safe alternative to the streets. Pax Christi offers case management, drug and alcohol counseling, mental health counseling, linkages to benefits and resources in the community, as well as the basics of food and shelter. Over 50 active volunteers assist with cleaning, making beds, painting, serving meals and providing food and clothing for guests. HHM is truly a selfless and heartwarming non-profit right here on Long Island. No one should ever feel that they need to suffer alone, that they are not being heard, that they can’t ask for help or that they are hopeless. Local Non-Proﬁt Is In Need Of Foster Homes For Cats! Alleykattz is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that operates on volunteers alone. The organization was formed in 2016 by Sonnia Cepeda. They service all of Long Island, New York City Metro and the surrounding areas. Their mission of rescuing abandoned and homeless cats, as well as cats in danger of abuse and neglect. Alleykatz has a strict

adoption policy to ensure cats and kittens get the best homes. Adoption application and a home visit are required before placement of a cat into a home. They believe that there is a good home for every cat they rescue and even though it might take a little longer for some to find their “furever” home, it is worth the wait if they end up in a happy home that suits them. Every cat is in foster care until the

Elementary students in the Seaford School District are learning by doing, which is the essence of Project Lead the Way, a program now in its second year at Harbor and Manor elementary schools. Seaford’s young scientists are able to explore a multitude of concepts through handson exploration. Fourth and fifth graders are immersed in the Science of Flight unit. They have been studying the forces that make an airplane fly such as drag, lift and thrust. In a recent activity, students designed paper airplanes. The materials list was simple – a blank sheet of white paper. A long ruler was laid out in the hallway, and students stepped out of the classroom to fly their creations. They also

discovered how weight played a role in flight, adding papers clips to their airplanes. If a flight was unsuccessful, they were able to make adjustments and try again, just like real scientists. Seaford Harbor librarian Jennifer Rosenberg said as part of the unit, students also learned about balanced and unbalanced forces, making teeter totters. To wrap up their study of flight, they will create cardboard gliders from kits. Life cycles and survival are the areas of focus for third graders. At Seaford Manor, students created their own bee colony. For each simulation, they drew different parts including queen bee, drone bee, water carriers, worker bees and pollen packers. In the courtyard, librarian

Samantha Riebling spread out small pom poms, with each color representing a different item such as food, water, pollen and resin. The worker bees were assigned different tasks and had to collect enough of each to ensure the colony’s survival. Ms. Riebling said the purpose of the hive activity was so students could explore “group life” creatures as well as the important relationship between bees and flowering plants. In the next simulation, she introduced another color pom pom representing pesticides, so students could understand how the actions of humans affect bees. They would also do an activity about carpenter bees, which live independently.

To assist property owners who missed the May 10th deadline for paying their 2020-2021 school taxes, Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato reminds residents they can still pay the bill by June 1st with a State-mandated 2% late payment penalty while avoiding additional interest and fees from accruing on their property.

Late payers should immediately contact the Tax Receiver Pravato’s office at (516) 624-6400 if they did not receive a second notification with a delinquent tax bill. Payments postmarked after June 1st cannot be accepted since the collection warrant will have expired. Those payments must be sent to the Nassau County

Treasurer at 1 West Street, Mineola, New York 11501. In September, the Nassau County Treasurer will be mailing notices to all property owners with taxes in arrears. The school hosted a college commitment ceremony for the studentathletes in front of the school on May 6, joined by their parents and coaches as well as school and district administrators. Principal Scott Bersin called them a “wonderful group” of students and said they will benefit tremendously from their college sports experience. Kevin Witt, the director of physical education, health and athletics, said that the term “studentathlete” has significance. In order to sit in those chairs, signing those letters of intent to play college sports, they first had to demonstrate a

strong commitment to their academics. The committed students are: • Craig Ackerman, football and lacrosse, SUNY Cortland • Vincenzo Buffolino, soccer, St. Joseph’s College • Anna Butler, softball, Hofstra University • Giana Cesario, basketball, St. Joseph’s College • Isabella DelPrete, cheerleading, Farmingdale State College • Emma Ettinger, cheerleading, James Madison University • Nicole Kassimatis, soccer, Iona College • Sarah Keane, track, Emory University • Emma Marcolini, dance, University of Akron • Marissa Mele, bowling, Sacred Heart University • Emily Padgett, cheerleading, Farmingdale State College • Olivia Pearse, soccer, Hofstra University • Paige Vasquez,

cheerleading, Nassau Community College Mr. Witt asked students to give their parents a round of applause, to thank the people who have supported their athletic endeavors and drove them to many practices over the years. He also acknowledged the coaches for teaching and nurturing Seaford’s athletes, as well as the guidance counselors who helped the 13 students through the application process and encouraged them to take the challenging courses that made them good student-athletes. Only 7% of high school athletes go on to play at the collegiate level, Mr. Witt added, and it is the great determination and work ethic of the 13 students that makes them part of an elite group. Each athlete received a framed photo, with a picture in his or her Seaford uniform and future college logo.
