Memorial Day weekend is upon us and, just like that, the unofficial start to summer beckons. Swimsuits will be unearthed from the back of closets, beach passes affixed to car windows, and bags packed with sunscreen and towels as the great majority of Long Islanders head to one of our local beaches to celebrate the season. For the last seven or so years, I have been attending the Jones Beach Air Show, taking in the breathtaking aerodynamics of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds on alternate years. It doesn’t matter how many shows – and pre-show arrivals – I have witnessed; it just never gets old. There is something incredible about witnessing these planes in flight, soaring against the sky in perfect formation.
Of course, Memorial Day weekend is only the beginning, and the hope is that there will be plenty more beautiful beach weekends to enjoy throughout the next several months, although, doesn’t it seem as though the nicest days are reserved for those spent inside the office staring at a computer screen? There is just no predicting Mother Nature, so best to take advantage of whatever rays of sunshine you can as soon as they begin to peek through. Speaking of unpredictable weather, I currently have tickets to about seven or eight concerts at the Jones Beach Theatre this year; fingers crossed that at least a few will be enjoyed under a clear summer sky, sans torrential downpour, lightning storm or any other inclement conditions. While none of my shows have ever been cancelled, there have

been several that pushed the boundaries. Just last summer, in fact, I found myself pondering just how “waterproof,” in fact, my phone was, and whether it was advisable to continue videoing the performance in front of me as sheets of rain streamed down around me. {The answers, in case you were wondering, were: A) not quite as waterproof as expected, and B) not so advisable.} So, enjoy your weekend, whatever it is you choose to do to usher in the summer season. Although the calendar indicates there’s still one month to go, the collective mindset seems to say there’s no need to wait. So slather on that sunscreen, grab your beach bag and dig your toes into the sand as the ocean caresses your feet. Just keep an eye on the sky for any storm clouds approaching.

Initiated by Joanna McCloskey, the district’s library chairperson, with the help of English Language Arts teacher Justin McCormack, the competition aimed to revive and spark interest in a seemingly waning form of expressive writing. The contest was held over two weeks, with rhyming morning announcements broadcast to encourage students to participate. More than 30 students entered and after careful consideration, the winners were announced. According to Seaford Superintendent Brian Conboy, the district has been focused on increasing more rigorous opportunities for students so they may become better prepared to be successful in college and in careers. Because of those increases, “we are finding that more students want to challenge themselves and are doing so successfully.” Seaford High School, which houses 724 students in grades 9-12, offers 19 AP courses and will add the first course of the AP Capstone program next year and the second course the following year. AP Capstone is considered the College Board’s equivalent to the International Baccalaureate program. Upon successful completion of both courses and meeting required
scores on AP exams, students can graduate with the more prestigious AP Capstone Diploma. Seaford High School Principal Scott Bersin explained that all students who are committed to meeting the demands of an advanced course load are encouraged to participate in AP or other college-level opportunities. “Over the past few years, we’ve built up a somewhat competitive environment where students are seeing what courses their peers are taking and are more motivated to push themselves with a more rigorous course load… and we allow them, providing they are able to meet some qualifying requirements. We’ve seen our students get accepted to schools such as MIT, Cornell, CalTech and Columbia University in recent years and we are focused on continuing on that road of success.”

College Awareness Day and sparked conversations about their next steps after graduation. Staff members also wore shirts bearing the names of their alma maters and offered students advice and answered questions about the college experience. “This is truly a culminating, celebratory event for our seniors after years of hardwork and planning for their futures,” said Frank Stazzone, Director of Guidance at
Seaford High School. “Their success sets an important example for our underclassmen as they begin to explore their post-graduate options and reinforces the fact that the decisions they make when they enter high school will have a direct impact on where they go to college. We hope this day inspires them so they can get accepted to the best college that is right for them and their future goals.”
Stazzone added that the high school is always exploring ways to better prepare students for college, such as hosting evening college planning events for sophomores and juniors, and providing opportunities to help students boost their SAT and ACT scores. Students from the Class of 2017 were accepted to such institutions as Cornell
University, The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina; CUNY Macaulay Honors Program, University of Delaware, Fordham University, Northeastern University, Northwestern University, Villanova University and University of Miami. Some students are setting their sights on venturing to other parts of the country, including Maine, Florida,
New Mexico and Hawaii. Many plan to attend SUNY schools, including Binghamton, Stony Brook, Geneseo and Buffalo. And others will study at local institutions, including St. John’s University, Adelphi, Hofstra, Molloy, Long Island University, Farmingdale State College and Nassau Community College.

Around the World With “passports” in hand, parents of Seaford Manor Elementary School third-graders toured more than 40 countries around the globe when they visited the Country Fair in their child’s classroom. The fair was a culminating event that showcased what students have been learning about countries and cultures over several weeks. Dressed for the part — in a kimono for Japan or lederhosen for Germany, for instance — students proudly stood by their projects, which consisted of a poster, a table-top float, a map, a banner, a report and a brochure, as parents traveled around the room marveling at the work the students had done. Each item displayed different information they researched either on the internet using iPads, or from reading books and other materials. Colorful posters showcased the country’s capital, population, distance from New York, and the continent it was on
while the table-top “float” highlighted students’ creativity by displaying their country’s points of interest in a fun, artistic way. The banner included the coat of arms, the flower, the flag, the motto, the national animal and a famous person from the country. And, a map illustrated the surrounding countries, resources, waterways and landscapes. Students also developed reports with the country’s traditions, customs and
cultures; food, tourist attractions, and words in English that originated from the country they researched, and a brochure with their country’s tourist attractions. According to third-grade teachers Elyse Cruz, Maura Coghlan and Lisa Doris, the research project aligned with the English Language Arts module about the Magic Tree House unit, which takes place in different countries, and the third-grade Putnam Social Studies unit on countries.

Angel Ball Held The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) celebrated possibility, hope and promise at the 30th annual Angel Ball. Three hundred and twenty-five LICADD supporters and friends came together to note a year of milestones in the addiction and recovery arena. The filled to capacity crowd raised over $310,000 enabling LICADD to continue it’s important and vital work of service, support, prevention education and advocacy. At the height of an opioid crisis on Long Island, this successful event was a positive stride in the fight to support those individuals and their families who struggle with alcohol and drug addiction. The Angel Ball paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Adele C. Smithers. A good friend and advocate for LICADD, she has been dubbed the “godmother” of research, education, prevention and recovery in the field of alcohol abuse and drug dependence. Her guidance, leadership and generosity will remain guiding principles for LICADD, as the agency furthers its 61year mission for years to come. Of Adele Smithers, LICADD Executive Director, Steve Chassman shared, “Amid the sad reality of Adele’s passing,
there has been tremendous opportunity and strides forward. Adele left us a blueprint for what it means to dedicate a life to community service, to lend a voice for those who have none, and to work diligently to confront inequity and injustice.” In tribute to Adele Smithers, the Angel Ball was renamed, The Adele Smithers Angel Ball. The Christopher D. Smithers Foundation, led by Adele’s son, Christopher Smithers, his wife, Nikki and family were on hand to accept the honor. Commissioner Timothy D. Sini of the Suffolk County Police Department was honored as LICADD Community Champion. LICADD applauded Commissioner Sini’s approach to addressing the opioid epidemic. Under his leadership, the Suffolk County Police Department offers rehabilitation rather than incarceration for youthful drug offenders. With Commissioner Sini’s support, LICADD and Suffolk County have partnered to operate a 24-hour substance abuse hotline. This successful program is entering its second year. The evening’s Keynote address was offered by filmmaker and advocate, Greg Williams. His ground-breaking films, The Anonymous People
and Generation Found have changed the way addiction and recovery are viewed, discussed and supported and has started a movement. LICADD was honored to have Mr. Williams share his powerful story. Walking the Talk The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County (HMTC) kicked off its recent inaugural Walk the Talk… Never Again 5K walk on the grounds of Welwyn Preserve in Glen Cove with a ribbon-cutting. The walk was a fundraiser to support HMTC’s education programs across Long Island that empower, mobilize and create Upstanders – people who
stand up to antisemitism and intolerance and advocate acceptance for all. The Walk’s theme was rescue and featured 25 posters highlighting extraordinary actions of rescue by ordinary people during the Holocaust. The posters were researched and created by the youth of the Babylonian Jewish Center in Great Neck under the leadership of Anna Hakakian.
