Honoring the military Although Memorial Day pays homage to the brave people who perished fighting for their country, it also is an opportunity to recognize the military men and women and their families who continue to work to ensure the freedom of Americans. The United States Armed Forces is renowned for its size and strength. Various sources suggest the size of the United States military is somewhere between 1.4 and 1.6 million active service people. The military is comprised of the Army, Army National Guard, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. Each of these military branches also has its own reserves. Memorial Day origins Memorial Day was first known as Decoration Day and was borne out of the Civil War. On May 30, 1868, General John Logan, a national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, decreed General Order No. 11, which designated the day for the “purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.” May 30th was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.
It took several years for the first state to recognize the holiday, which New York adopted in 1873. By 1890, all northern states recognized Decoration Day. When the holiday changed from commemorating those who died fighting the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war after World War I, the south began to recognize it as well.

Memorial Day is celebrated each May to commemorate the people who died in service of the United States of America. Even though barbecues and visions of the upcoming summer weather may command much of the attention come Memorial Day weekend, the holiday really serves as a remembrance for those military members who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country, as well as the personnel who continue to protect and serve today.

The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.) www.BACAworld.org
Bikers Against Child Abuse, Inc. (B.A.C.A.) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that exists to provide aid, comfort, safety and support for children that have been sexually, physically and emotionally abused. They are dedicated to the principle that ‘one of the basic rights of childhood is to be safe and protected’. When a child’s family or environment has failed them, B.A.C.A. stands ready to help.
From there it was only a matter of time before the word spread quickly about what was happening in Utah. Shortly after forming the first chapter in Utah, another chapter was formed in that state, then Oklahoma, Missouri and Texas. The rest is part of the B.A.C.A. history. One of the greatest and most unique assets of B.A.C.A. for children is their “biker family attitude”. Bikers are a tightly knit group! The brotherhood and family values are not just a

Some requirements are that you have a desire to help abused children, you have regular access to a motorcycle, you are 18 years or older, you can pass an NCIC fingerprint check and you can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events (their meetings are held the second Sunday of every month at the American Legion Hall in Bohemia at 9:00AM unless it’s a holiday). You can also donate to this organization at anytime on their website. Another Organization You Can Get Involved With: Agape Community Church Mastic, NY Agape Community Church is a non-profit organization based in Mastic. They are focused on the Long Island community and will be holding their annual Back To School Event on Saturday, August 17 from 12-5PM, where they will be giving away free school supplies and they will serve refreshments. They are already taking donations for this event and are attempting to raise additional funds and supplies this year. They understand that a lot of children may begin a new school year this upcoming fall without all the needed supplies. This organization started as an idea to help one wounded child. This child was eight years old at the time and was so frightened of his perpetrators that he would not leave his residence. Their founder, having had kind and loving experiences with bikers in his youth, was moved to include this boy in his biker circle. Within weeks this boy was seen all over town playing with other children and riding his bike. The idea to rally the biker community in defense and in support of children was actualized in 1995, when the first ride was held to visit wounded children and bring them into the biker family. That first ride had twenty seven bikes present.

Seven continents worth of knowledge now fill the brains of third graders at Seaford Manor Elementary School, who completed extensive research projects on countries from around the globe. In anticipation of the annual Country Fair, in which parents visit and have their passports stamped as they travel
from country to country, each student became an expert on a nation of his or her choice. They did research using books and online resources to learn about culture, geography, language and traditions. All of these aspects were captured in the centerpiece of each student’s presentation, a model of a parade float.
Additionally, every third grader created a travel brochure that had all the information a tourist should know when visiting that country. Each student also created a poster that showcased the flag, capital city, customs, natural resources and few basic sayings in the primary language, along with its distance from Seaford.

11 Vikings To College Teams After suiting up for the Vikings for several years, 11 student-athletes from Seaford High School will soon be representing new teams. The seniors made their college commitments at a National Letter of Intent signing ceremony after school on May 1, where they were joined by their families, coaches, guidance counselors and administrators.
Three members of the football squad will remain teammates next year, as Joe Angelastro, Andrew Cuchel and Paul Scacia have committed to play at Nassau Community College. From the boys lacrosse team, Ryan Butler is headed to Adelphi University and Sean Derby will attend Syracuse University. Other athletes
included Carl Bloom (New York Institute of Technology, track and field), Arianna Casha (Farmingdale State College, soccer), Luke
DiCapua (Alfred State College, baseball), Victoria Ippoliti (Hofstra University, dance), Vantage Ruano (Fairleigh Dickinson University, lacrosse) and
Tim Saulpaugh (Queens College, baseball). “It’s not an easy thing to make it to the next level,” said Athletic Director Michael
Spreckels, who reminded the athletes to thank the people in their lives who have supported them along the way.
