What Would you Do... By: Jamie Lynn Ryan What would you do if you won a million dollars? Well, in this day and age, the question is more, what would you do if you won many tens of millions of dollars, hundreds of millions even? After taxes, of course. And the answer? Well, it varies by person. Some people, when presented with such a seemingly farfetched concept, spout off a list of equally unrealistic purchases that they would immediately make – you know, the private island, jumbo jet, yacht… the whole deal. But then there are others who, should they ever have the good fortune to come into that kind of money, want only to “be comfortable” – to pay off remaining

mortgages and car loans, to make necessary repairs and renovations around the home, maybe buy a new car – nothing too outlandish really. Because really, once you take into account the taxes, plus your average life expectancy, a few million dollars can be blown through fairly quickly. It sounds like a lot, but is it really? Depends upon how you budget it. Plan a couple of family vacations, put some away for your children’s college funds, maybe some in the retirement fund… Which brings to light that other question – would you continue to work if you won such a jackpot? For some, the answer would be an easy and unequivocal “no.” And, if your only purpose of having a job is to make ends meet, that makes perfect sense.

But if you are fortunate enough to have an actual career, one that you have nurtured throughout high school, college and young adulthood, then why should money lessen that passion? If anything, it should allow you the freedom to explore other, perhaps less lucrative, options within that chosen field. Think of it as a new lease on life. Money can’t buy happiness, we know this much is true. But it sure can eliminate many of the daily stresses which cause unnecessary aggravation in our lives… which, in turn, would most likely result in increased happiness, no? Of course, the odds of anyone being forced to wrestle with these questions are fairly slim to none. But hey, you just never know.

It was by far, one of the most detailed and challenging paintings of her career. She is currently handling shipping, packaging and framing for the poster. Thompson has also painted the commemorative painting of “THE BLACK COURSE – Bethpage, Over the Years, N.Y.” in 2002 which was hanging in Governor Pataki’s office in Albany and won a “Best on Long Island” award. Her collection also includes posters for the 2004 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot and the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage State Park’s Black Course. The 2009

John’s speech centered on Theodore Roosevelt as a man who was not afraid to stand up for his beliefs. Adam’s speech was written from writer Earnest Hemmingway’s point of view and focused on why Theodore Roosevelt inspired him. As newcomers to the competition, McCormack said, “I was most impressed with the phenomenal products these students came back with after they were introduced to the contest.” Last year, Seaford graduate Matthew Provenzano made history for the district by becoming the first Seaford student to win the competition. He competed in the contest four times. Both John and Adam agreed that the experience sharpened their speaking skills and boosted their confidence. “Next year,” Adam quipped, “I’m going to win it.”

Two Seaford High School students were named Finalists in the Theodore Roosevelt Nassau County Public Speaking Competition. Sophomore John DeFrancisci and junior Adam Doniger were among 13 students who were awarded medals after demonstrating exemplary oratory skills that led them to the final round. “Their speeches were well written and well delivered,” said Assistant Principal Carisa Burzynski, who coached the students with English teacher Justin McCormack. “They did an amazing job.” After working with coaches and independently for four to five months, the students delivered a five-minute speech on the porch of Sagamore Hill, where Roosevelt was known to give many of his speeches. They were rated on originality, content, eloquence, stage presence and timing.

Priscilla Andryauska, from the Seaford UFSD, earned the Nassau BOCES George Farber Outstanding Student Award for her genuine personality and her determination to succeed. She was among 17 honorees recognized during a gala ceremony held at the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset recently. When teachers and peers describe Priscilla, a litany of positive personality traits come to light including “mature, reliable, respectful, moral, sensitive and kind.” According to her award nominator, she has “a delightful personality and a pleasant sense of humor.” So it is hard

to imagine that only a few years ago, Priscilla was failing academically and had all but stopped attending school. The opportunity afforded her by the Nassau BOCES Positive Alternative Twilight High School (PATHS) turned her life around. At PATHS, Priscilla found a less stressful classroom environment and extremely attentive teachers, helping her to vastly improve academically, socially and emotionally. “PATHS has afforded her the opportunity to develop the courage and conviction to stay in school,” said Priscilla’s award nominator. “She now looks forward to a bright and productive

future. She has really come a long way.” PATHS provides an alternative for students who have not succeeded in the traditional school setting. The program equips students with the tools necessary to return successfully to their home high schools and helps them prepare for post-secondary education or employment. “I can think of no more fitting tribute than to recognize those students, who, like George Farber, would be the best ambassadors for Nassau BOCES, Nassau County, Long Island, and for public education as a whole,” said District Superintendent Dr. Thomas Rogers, as he welcomed the recipients,

Golf Classic Set educators, family members and other guests to the event. “George was an incredible ambassador just as you will be as you go forward in your lives.” Exceptional students have been earning this prestigious award since 2007. It currently stands as a memorial to former Nassau BOCES Board President George Farber, whose passion and drive for improving the lives of students at Nassau BOCES was only surpassed by his love and care for them. Farber was the longest-serving board member in Nassau County, having served from 1971 to 2009.

John T. Mather Memorial Hospital’s 28th Annual Golf Classic will take place at the Port Jefferson Country Club at Harbor Hills on Monday, June 3rd, with proceeds benefitting Nursing Education programs at the hospital. New this year is the presentation of the first annual John T. Mather Founder’s Award, which will go to a distinguished individual or organization with an exemplary record of leadership, dedication and excellence to the provision of health care in the community. The first recipient of the award will be Gene Gerrard of Mount Sinai, who founded the Golf Classic 28 years ago. The event has raised more than $1 million dollars for the Hospital. Gerrard also

served for 32 years as a member of Mather’s Board of Directors. Registration for the Golf Classic begins at 9 am followed by an 11 am shotgun start. Foursomes will be treated to a barbecue lunch out on the course followed by a cocktail reception and dinner from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Dessert and a raffle drawing takes place at 7 p.m. The golf entry fee is $500 per person or $2,000 per foursome.
