I’m not sure when it first occurred to me, but at some point over the course of the last few weeks, I came to the somewhat startling realization that it has been 10 full years since I graduated from college. A whole decade. Wow. I’m not sure why this came as such a shock. After all, the math clearly adds up. And I did attend my high school’s 10-year reunion a full 4 years ago. But still, it seemed that there would be a bit more of a cushion until the next milestone. I suppose time flies while you’re busy

working to make ends meet and your life is not dictated by a bell schedule. Although, come to think of it, there were no bells to signal the beginning or ending of class in college, which was nice in its own way. It was that subtle transition from the structure of high school to the faux freedom of “the real world,” where you were able to choose a path well suited to your future pursuits and, well, pursue it. And now here we are, 10 years later. Bells have been replaced by alarm clocks and deadlines and bills and all those fun adult

responsibilities. To think we once thought finals and term papers were the ultimate source of stress, right? It almost makes school seem appealing once again. Almost. To all those graduating from college this Spring, congratulations. May you find something worth pursuing that brings you a great deal of happiness and fulfillment; ideally, something which pays the bills, of course. And may you savor these next years most of all as, before you know it, you will be receiving invitations to your own 10 year college reunion.

The Gold Coast Arts Center, a 501(c)(3) organization that has been dedicated to promoting and supporting the arts through education, exhibition, performance and outreach on Long Island for over 20 years, has announced that their widely successful “ARTreach” program is in danger of being cut back due to budget constraints. If this happens, hundreds of Long Island and New York students who currently benefit from the programming will be denied access to the services moving forward.

With this fact in mind, the Harvey and Gloria Kaylie Foundation has issued a challenge grant: If the center can raise $30,000 by June 15, the foundation will match it. That means that every dollar they raise will be worth two dollars to their cause. The Kaylies are philanthropists who are committed to education and other causes that create a strong community and Mr. Kaylie was very impressed with the work that the Gold Coast Arts Center has done over the last 20 years in the areas

The impact the Gold Coast Arts Center has made on the lives of tens of thousands of students through their outreach program of arts workshops and programs is immeasurable. Through their ART-REACH program, students who normally would not be able to afford such things receive training in art, music, dance, ceramics, chess, fencing and other art forms - ALL IN THE COMFORT OF THEIR OWN SCHOOLS! team. In addition to the Regatta, there will be the Paddling for Poker event, which is part of the Regatta, to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Disease research and support. Registration is at 1 p.m. at Beekman Beach, 1 West End Avenue in Oyster Bay. Participants paddle to five boats; at each boat, they receive a card. Once they receive five cards, they have made their poker hand. The highest hand wins a prize to be awarded at the awards dinner. All participants must finish by 4 p.m. This event is open to all kayakers and paddleboarders. An awards dinner will take place at 6 p.m. with live entertainment provided by the Old Salts Band. This year’s theme for the dinner is “Red, White, and Blue.” Awards will be given for Highest Fundraising Individual and Highest Fundraising Team in each category. In addition, the winning poker hand will be announced. There is no charge for dinner to all participants who raise a minimum of $100. This year, The Alzheimer’s Regatta will have a special treat for those who want to watch the Regatta and Paddling for Poker: a guided tour of historic Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor. The Vessel Christeen is a 40-foot Gaff Rigged Sloop that was built in 1883 and completely restored in 1999. She is the oldest Oyster Sloop in America and is a National Historic Landmark. The Christeen will sail from the Sagamore Yacht Club at noon and again at 2 p.m.

Temple Sinai Event

In celebration of Yom HaAtzma’ut, Israel Independence Day, Temple Sinai of Massapequa hosted a representative of the Israel Consulate of Israel. During Friday night Shabbat worship, Mr. Andrew Gross, the Political Advisor to the Deputy Consul General of Israel in New York discussed the tremendous advances Israel has accomplished in her 66 years since the famous U.N. vote in 1948 creating the State of Israel. Mr. Gross discussed issues such as the environment and that 80% of agricultural irrigation water is from

recycled water, 12 noble laureates are from Israel, in a country where every school age child learns Hebrew, Arabic and English so many more languages are spoken since Israel’s population comes from 120 countries and so much more. During the question and answer conversation, over coffee and cake, the discussion became more focused. Questions regarding the stumbling block towards a peace agreement since Mahmoud Abbas’s decision to include Hamas within the government took center stage. But, the discussion

also focused on increased tourism to Israel in the past several years, the strong ties between the American Jewish community and Israel and now Israel has the largest Jewish population of any county in the world second to the United States. Judi Vogel, a Temple Sinai congregant said of the event, “I was honored to have Mr. Gross attend our services and the discussion after worship. He brought a sense of pride to our community that many of us need in these troublesome times. His words about Israel and her accomplishments were eye opening and we learned things that most people are unaware. He reminded me of how Jews are always there to give of themselves and how Israelis are trying to help Syrian refugees by providing water to Jordan and treating the wounded in Israeli hospitals.”

NEW ADDITIONS - Falcons Mr. and Mrs. Meadowbrook gave birth to two falcon babies for the 18th year in a row, totaling 65 falcons, born at NUMC since 1997. Peregrine falcons nest on the 17th floor window ledge of the NUMC. The two new baby falcons, Isabella and Connor, were banded by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation as Peregrine falcons are protected by New York State and are still listed as an endangered species. The Department of Environmental Conservation tracks the birds for historical data, such as where they were born, their age, changes in weight, etc. Congratulations to all!

Seaford Harbor and Manor elementary School students beamed with pride as they shared a memorable bonding moment with their special someone during Special Person’s Day. The Manor Elementary School kicked off its school-wide event to a standing-room-only crowd in the multipurpose room. There was a performance by the Manor School Jugglers, singing

by second graders, poetry reciting by third graders, a reading by fourth-grade essay winner Robbie Vitale and music by the fifthgrade advanced band. Guests then dispersed into classrooms to participate in a craft activity and view students’ classwork. At the Harbor School, first-graders created a special photo frame craft and had their photo taken with their special someone to put in the

frame as a remembrance. Kindergartners made an edible bumble bee cookie craft and shared snack time with their special guest. “Spending time with special people in your life is the most precious gift,” said Harbor Principal Donna DeLucia-Troisi. “Kids never forget the times they spend with the people they care about the most.”
