Clothing Donations Needed For Long Island Children

EXPERT SHARES THE SCIENCE OF ADDICTION - Dr. Stephen Dewey recently visited Seaford High School to talk to students about the impacts of addiction on the brain. He not only discussed the harmful effects of alcohol, drugs, tobacco and vaping, but also discussed other addictions that impact teens like excessive use of cell phones and video games. His visuals showed the chemical changes to the brain caused by substance abuse and also discussed ways to get help. During a pair of assemblies, Dr. Dewey presented to all students in grades 9-12, then held a question and answer session for student leaders, giving them information that they can use to help their peers avoid abuse and addiction. Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10. Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach

program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by

Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk www.eoc-suffolk.com The primary mission of the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk (EOC of Suffolk), is to promote selfsufﬁciency among low-income families and individuals. Most of their programming is devoted to revitalizing communities, broadening the minds of children and assisting families in need. Despite the word Suffolk in its name, the agency operates a number of programs in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. One such initiative is its Services for People with Developmental Disabilities program.

EOC of Suffolk offers a comprehensive array of services for people with developmental disabilities aimed at enhancing their quality of life. Its specially trained staff will customize a program to help maximize each person’s ability to live with independence and self-sufﬁciency. In addition, personalized case management helps to ensure that individuals receive the government beneﬁts to which they are eligible. The overall offering has six components: Community Habilitation Services: Under this program, EOC of Suffolk provides individuals with support and services that focus on developing life skills and community integration.

Respite Services: EOC of Suffolk provides temporary relief from the demands of caregiving, helping to reduce overall family stress. The program helps families provide uninterrupted care for their loved one with a developmental disability. Respite/Recreation: This service component provides educational, occupational and recreational activities, as well as opportunities to increase socialization skills. Services take place on-site as well as on ﬁeld trips to help enrich the learning process. Self-Directed and Fiscal Intermediary Services: This program empowers individuals to exercise the maximum amount of control over the types of support and services they wish to receive. They also have a voice in the selection of providers and in how services are provided. Working with employers and funding agencies, people with developmental disabilities can engage as full citizens in communities of their choosing. EOC of Suffolk can also arrange for the services of a Fiscal Intermediary for individuals who have chosen self-direction – supplemented by administrative and billing support. Workshop in the district. The initiative, which focuses on student choice, was introduced several years ago at the elementary

level before coming to sixth grade in September. Teachers say it has been a very positive addition to the English language arts

curriculum and has their students energized. “It gives them more time to explore their writing, and more time for me as a teacher to get to know them as writers,” teacher Julia Spellman said. During a recent writing unit on literary essays, each student selected one character to analyze from a book of his or her choosing. They had to use evidence from the book to support their arguments. What makes the process particularly engaging, Ms. Spellman said, is the amount of student interaction that occurs. Peer review is an essential part of the writing process in which students look over a classmate’s essay and give constructive feedback. Her students enjoy helping each other and learning from one another. process and getting advice from other writers in the class. Bridget Grosser said she enjoys that the focus throughout sixth grade has been on incorporating more details into her writing. She said that this will prepare her for the more in-depth pieces she will have to write later in middle school and in high school. Sixth grade teacher Richard Thau has also noticed a motivational uptick with the Writing Workshop model. His students have been very receptive to writing assignments that are personal to them. “What do you want to write about? What’s on your mind? How does this relate to your life?” are some questions he asks of his students to help spark their ideas. Mr. Thau’s students have also been working on literary essays and were given a broad range of

topics. They could write about a character or theme from any book, or make comparisons between two books of their choosing. “I enjoy being able to write what I want about what I’m reading,” student Jimmy Hurson said, “and I like expressing my feelings about a book.” Each unit in Writing Workshop includes minilessons, in which students learn different strategies and techniques, as well as a review of mentor texts, which are published books that serve as examples of good writing. Students also keep writer’s notebooks, which they use for free writing throughout the year and to develop ideas for their longer pieces. “This model really helps build their confidence in writing and it’s nice when students come up with their own ideas,” Mr. Thau said. “We’re just trying to spread the joy of writing.”

Saf-T-Swim Helps Families Splash Into Long Island Summer Safely With Water Safety Acronym distractions.” As summer approaches, the local swim school urges parents and families to practice the following water safety tips from the Saf-T-Swim, Think Water Safety, Think S.P.L.A.S.H. guideline: S = Swim Lessons. It is imperative to teach children and caregivers how to swim and learn basic safety instructions. Swim lessons are an essential tool for helping children learn lifesaving skills year-round. In addition to providing fundamental knowledge and techniques, children also gain confidence while learning to love and respect the water. P = Put Away Toys, Put Up Ladder. All toys and ladders should be stored away when not in use to avoid slips and falls, or entry without supervision.

L = Life Jackets. Life jackets should be worn when on a boat, canoe, kayak, or paddleboard. A = Adult Always Watching. Children should never be left unattended in or near a pool or any body of water, including a bath. Be sure to establish an adult water watcher to make sure that no child is ever left unsupervised—not even for a minute. S = Shut All Gates. Use self-closing and self-latching gates, gate alarms, pool alarms, children’s personal alarms, door alarms, and motion detecting devices. H = How to Rescue. Teach all caregivers infant, child/ adult CPR, first aid, and water rescue techniques. Always have the proper rescue equipment on hand: Personal Floatation Devices (PFDs), life ring, shepherds hook.

Meteorologists have many tools at their disposal to help forecast storms and other phenomena, but it is impossible to predict the weather with 100 percent accuracy. When the weather takes a turn for the worse, the National Weather Service may issue certain notices to prepare the public. Understanding the level of threat a

notice carries can help people take appropriate action and avoid serious consequences. The NWS uses a fourtier system to alert the public of hazards. seven days. Brooks was able to pass Senate Bill S.1289-B for the 4th time since he first sponsored it. What makes this time different is the fact that its “same as” bill in the NYS Assembly (A.4978; Englebright) finally passed several days earlier after

having been held up in committee during previous legislative sessions. Also known as “Bouy’s Law,” S.1289-B requires veterinarians to provide certain information to animal owners regarding the drugs dispensed to an animal. Such information includes the name and

description of the drug, the directions for use, actions to be taken in the event of a missed dose; instructions for proper storage, any common reasonably anticipated adverse effects associated with the use of such drug, and manufacturer precautions and relevant warnings. “For most of us, our

With the passage of Bouy’s Law we are making this a legal requirement so that more informed decisions can be made and potential tragedies averted.” All for the love of a dog… In 2013, Mary Kate Tischler and her late husband Jimmy took their beloved 3 year old Yellow Labrador Retriever, Bouy, to have routine knee surgery after which he was prescribed a painkiller to aid his recovery. Unbeknownst the Tischlers, the drug was known to have serious sideeffects on some dogs and because they had not been given any prior warning from the veterinarian, they

began to administer the drug as per his instructions. As a result, Bouy began to suffer acute kidney failure and was eventually put to sleep. Sadly, this tragedy, like many others affecting pet-owners across New York State, might have been avoided had there been a requirement to establish informed consent for prescribed medications. “From the moment when Buoy’s tragic fate became clear to us, Jimmy and I began efforts to ensure that Buoy’s short life would have meaning,” said Mary Kate. “The most important thing

to us was to raise awareness about the lack of required warnings and to attempt to ensure that no other pet would suffer the way that Buoy did. And, when Jimmy himself suffered an untimely death six years ago, I continued to march on with our fight for the enactment of Buoy’s Law. Today, I am confident that Jimmy and Buoy are smiling down on me, very proud!” Now that Bouy’s Law has passed both the Senate and Assembly it is expected to be signed by Governor Hochul before the end of the year.
