Going Solar is on the Rise

Rising energy costs and a growing desire to live more eco-friendly lifestyles has spurred interest in solar panels to power our homes. Although solar panels have been around for quite some time, only recently have homes cloaked in panels aimed at capturing the rays of the sunsolar panels begun to be so visible. The World Meteorological Organization reported that the solar industry saw a robust expansion of 41 percent in 2013, and that popularity continues to grow. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association®, in 2015 the solar industry grew an 34 percent more than 2013 figures. Through the first half of the year, the solar industry supplied 40 percent of all new 2015 electric generating capacity - more than any other energy technology. Solar energy now has the cumulative electric capacity to power more than 4.6 million average American homes. According to Green Tech Media, American solar companies are now installing one solar system every four minutes. If the market

continues to grow at this pace, through 2016 there will be a system installed every 20 seconds. These gains in the solar industry may have been spurred on by the Solar Investment Tax Credit, which the SEIA says has helped to lower the cost of solar energy by more than 73 percent. How does solar energy work? Solar energy is turned into electric power through the photovoltaic (PV) cells located in the solar panels. The PV cells transform sunlight into direct electric current. An inverter built into the system converts the DC electricity into the alternating current (AC) that powers homes. The AC is sent to the home’s electrical panel and used to power lights and other devices. What happens at night? Unless a home is selfcontained and off the grid, the average homeowner will not have to worry about night usage or batteries to store energy. He or she will continue to use energy off of the traditional electrical system at night. Many electrical costs will be offset by the amount

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Several weeks ago, shortly after the passing of my “Pal,” my Grandpa, we discovered what appeared to be a small bird’s nest nestled under the awning in the backyard. Assuming it was just a collection of twigsin-progress, I gingerly climbed on top of a chair to peek inside, only to find three beautiful blue eggs, clearly from the likes of a robin. No one was certain how long it had been there, though obviously enough time for the mama bird to lay these eggs. Not wanting to disturb the carefully orchestrated set-up, we left everything as it was and waited – from a safe distance – to see if the mother would return. Well, return she did and, within a few days, a fourth egg appeared in the nest, as she guarded her stash, ﬂeeing only brieﬂy upon any human sightings.

Now, you may be wondering, what’s the big deal? It’s spring, ‘tis the season for the birds and the bees and all of nature to frolic and procreate. While this is true, it must be noted that, in the 55 years my grandparents resided in this house, there were most likely exactly zero nests successful built by any birds. This was due to the fact that my Grandpa, lovable as he was, did not care for the messy remnants of twigs and leaves that the birds tended to leave while in the “construction” stage of things. At the first sign of a nest-in-progress, out would come the broom, sweeping all of their hard work away in one fell swoop. But now, here they were – four, tiny, perfect Easter-looking eggs, ready to hatch at any moment with brand new life. We kept a watchful eye on them for weeks, until one day, out popped a baby, all pink and naked, ﬂopped on the other three eggs, which were now

showing signs of beginning to crack as well. A few days later, four fuzzy little hatchlings resided in the nest, napping in a pile of soft, pulsating fur, eyes not quite open, occasionally opening their beaks in case food happened to be lurking nearby. As of this writing, the four are still happily cohabitating, the fuzz gradually beginning to be filled in with soft gray feathers, the eyes fully open and alert, the beaks ready and waiting for mama’s next meal delivery. According to most references, it may be as little as a week before these little chicks are ready to ﬂy off on their own. And such is the circle of life… How wonderful to be able to witness it right in Grandma and Grandpa’s backyard, especially at this time. There are those who believe in signs – for those, I don’t think you could ask for a clearer indication that this special delivery was intended just for us, right here, right now.

Seaford Harbor and Manor elementary school students brought a family member into school and shared a special bonding moment as they celebrated Seniors’ Day/Special Someone’s Day. Harbor Elementary School first-graders created a special photo frame craft and had their photo taken with their family member to put in the frame as a remembrance. Students also brought their guests back to the

classroom to show them the work they have been doing throughout the year, including a recent lesson on animal habitats. Kindergartners and their guests made an edible cookie craft and shared snack time with their special someone. Guests at the Manor Elementary School were entertained at a school-wide event in the gymnasium featuring the fifth-grade advanced band, the Manor School

jugglers, and songs by second-graders and kindergartners. They were then invited into the classrooms to participate in craft activities and to view students’ classwork. “This tradition is a wonderful way to create memories that will last a lifetime,” said Harbor Principal Donna DeLuciaTroisi. “The children are so proud to share their school and their work with those they care about the most.”

an innovative approach to caring for the dying. Vigil volunteers, dubbed Compassionate Shepherds, are specially trained to comfort the dying at Good Shepherd’s inpatient center in Port Jefferson. This program enables family members and friends to leave the bedside for a respite, knowing their loved ones are not alone. “The feedback we’ve received since the program began three years ago has been extremely positive,” said Chief Administrative Officer Mary Ellen Polit. “Our Compassionate Shepherds have added another level of support that Good Shepherd is able to provide to dying people and their families and allows us to fulfill and extend our mission of compassionate care.” The recognition from HANYS is part of its “NYS Triple Aim” campaign, which focuses on how New York hospitals and health systems are finding new ways to improve population health, enhance the quality of patient care and reduce the cost of health care, despite fiscal restraints.

Building a Bench Junior Girl Scout Troop 3022, comprised of Manor Elementary School fifthgraders, proudly dedicated a buddy bench to their school playground, May 11th. The buddy bench is a symbol of friendship and inclusiveness with hopes that anyone who sits on it will find a “buddy” to play with. The dark-stained, wooden bench is adorned with a brass plaque that bears the names of each girl in the troop and will be permanently installed in cement for years of enjoyment by Manor students. During a special dedication ceremony on the playground, each Girl Scout lined up behind the bench and recited some words about its purpose, which capped off with a ribbon-cutting by Manor Principal Debra Emmerich and Assistant Principal Caroline Schozer.

The girls said they worked on the bench for a few months, honing carpentry skills such as using a screw gun, sanding and staining in an effort to complete the bench for their Bronze Award project. The girls will receive their awards, the highest honor at the junior level, at a ceremony on June 16th at St. Frances De Chantal Church in front of the entire Seaford/Wantagh Girl Scout Council. ‘To earn a Bronze Award, the girls had to fill a void in the community,” said troop co-leader Julie Nietsch. “Many of the girls were in an anti-bullying club last year and they wanted to do something that would help prevent bullying and promote a more inclusive environment at their school.” Girl Scout troop member Jillian Bartolomeo said, “One of the most exciting

things we did in Girl Scouts this year was creating the buddy bench.” “If you are alone, the bench provides an alternative way to make new friends,” added troop mate Kira Reeves. According to coleader Tara DiFondi, the girls in the troop have been together since kindergarten and “are excited about earning the Bronze Award by completing a project that they know will make a difference.” “I think the buddy bench is a good addition because children of all ages can make new friends,” said troop member Paige Burch. “It’s great because it helps stop bullying and I am happy to help the community and my school,” troop mate Taylor BUILDING A BENCH - Junior Girl Scout Troop 3022 and leaders, from left, Tara DiFondi added.
